From Trent's blog:

Redlegs vs Chuck Norris

From the Reds:

Stanton is going on the DL with a strained left hamstring.

We are selecting from Louisville the contract of LHP Michael Gosling (13gs, 5-3, 3.00, 78ip, 71h, 23bb, 65k, 7hr). He will wear 36.

Redlegs lineup:
Hatteberg 1b
Phillips 2b
Griffey rf
Dunn lf
Encarnacion 3b
Hamilton cf
Ross c
Castro ss
Arroyo p

Hell of a contract extension, Wayne.

"The guy is raking" also equates to "trade value is high."

Who is the real Adam Dunn? The one who absolutely blisters the ball and carries a team on his shoulders for a month at a time? Or the guy who disappears for that same length, bringing the team down with him?

Trading him while he is "raking" could be the best move they make.

Truth of the matter is that this Dunn is worth the 13 million option.

I wonder if Arroyo's struggles can be attributed to one of two things before thinking injury: either the league is catching up to him, or the Reds' advance scouting is really that bad. Either way, what he is currently doing is not working, and lefties are torching him.

They have a ton of money falling off the books. It is hard to spend a lot of money in the free agent market on short term contract and I don't imagine the Reds would be looking to jump into 3 and 4 year deals for 30M+ with what little is going to be on the free agent market this off-season.

You have to wonder if the best thing for Arroyo is throwing him out there every fifth day.

Does he need one of those "long toss" programs to build up velocity? Or what?

I'm not being critical of Arroyo. He showed last year that he can be a terrific pitcher. But I just wonder if this is the best way to handle him.

For his career, June has been by far the worst month of his career where his July's are better than May, June, or August.

He doesn't get worse as a pitcher as the innings go by which is completely opposite of the norm. He actually gets better in the 6th and 7th innings. Where he's horrible is when he pitches the 9th. He's not a 120-pitch pitcher.

He does have a wall that's closer to 100 pitches.

His career ERA's and OPS' by month and by inning vs. the National League averages for 2006:

OPS/ERA..........Arroyo.................NL 2006

Mar/Apr........(.683)/(3.61)......(.767)/(4.63)
May..............(.753)/(4.52)......(.761)/(4.49)
June.............(.845)/(5.35)......(.766)/(4.48)
July..............(.741)/(4.14)......(.792)/(4.79)
August..........(.800)/(4.79)......(.767)/(4.38)
Sep/Oct........(.665)/(3.34).......(.760)/(4.42)

By inning OPS only...

1st Inn...............(.771)................(.800)
2nd Inn..............(.768)................(.750)
3rd Inn...............(.762)................(.777)
4th Inn...............(.755)................(.794)
5th Inn...............(.743)................(.792)
6th Inn...............(.669)................(.797)
7th Inn...............(.704)................(.754)
8th Inn...............(.736)................(.755)
9th Inn...............(.994)................(.691)
Extra Inn............(1.055)...............(.733)

The league stats don't differentiate between starters and relievers, but to give you an idea on how tough it is to face a batter more than once in a game, here are the stats for when batters faced a starter the 1st time, 2nd time, and 3rd or more times along with whenever a batter faced a reliever. Notice that the average reliever's OPS is identical to a starter's 1st time through the order.

vs. SP, 1st.....................(.746)
vs. SP, 2nd....................(.787)
vs. SP, 3rd+...................(.815)
vs. RP............................(.746)

2007 Arroyo stats:

Last 28 days.......ERA of 11.03 and OPSA of 1.157
April...................ERA of 2.86 and OPSA of .599

Today...........ERA of 9.00 and OPSA of .906.

His last start was an ERA of only 4.50 but his OPSA was 1.030. So, even though he didn't give up as many runs, he still pitched poorly.

Again today, no signs of improvement.

Arroyo is a finesse pitcher and when he misses his location, he's toast.

He gets better as the game goes on because his command improves as the game goes on. His arm though isn't strong enough to go past 8 innings, but he's only done that 8 times in his career.

He needs to get his command back and history tells us that he will before July gets here.

Coutlangus is a specialist.

His ERA against LH's this year is under 1.00....well, it was until Coffey allowed Vazquez to score.

His ERA against RH's is 7.00. Melhuse hit's both ways..

Manager Ron Washington said newly-acquired C Adam Melhuse will be in the lineup about twice a week as the backup to Gerald Laird. Melhuse wanted out of Oakland because of a lack of game action, but he's not likely to get much more with the Rangers. Washington said Melhuse will serve as a mentor to Laird and add leadership in the clubhouse. "He's excellent" as a leader, said Washington, who worked with Melhuse when he was third-base coach for the A's. "He's not a loud guy. But he knows right from wrong. When I heard we had an opportunity to get him, I said, 'Get him."'
(06/11/2007).

And, we couldn't use a Switch-hitting catcher that bat's .300 over Moeller? We could have obtained Melhuse and got rid of both Moeller and Valentin and had a decent bench.

Probably the only thing that gets him fired before the offseason is for people to quit going to the games...

Conine has been what this team needs.....a good bench player...can hit for avg and some power.

You ever notice that when teams start losing more and more....the injuries start piling up. MS was first.... BP is next.....I see more coming

I know baseball is not football......but when the Bengals were bad...and even in 1995-97 when they played at about .500 and "competed".......they never blew out teams.......this team looks like a Bengal team......they barely squeek by games.....causing JN to have to push his starters and overuse his bullpen and expose his bench.

What i do not want....is a typical Bengal type 1998-2001 or so ending....when they would win 2 out of 3 and "compete" making MB think this team was close and all that garbage.

Losing two out of three to the Rangers at home - totally unacceptable. What bothers me most is that it really doesn't bother the team or management as much as it should.

Trading Dunn, trading Junior, Arroyo...about anyone on this squad - I could probably make a case for dealing any or all of them, but it won't make a damn bit of difference until Krivsky and Narron are sent packing.

Seriously, I don't see any improvement over Miley/Dan0. This team needs a young/agressive Manager/GM combination with a plan - a complete change of organizational culture. Unfortunately, I don't see it happening.

I had a great time meeting everybody this weekend and enjoyed the games. I guess I was kind of charmed by seeing the GAB for the first time, but now that I'm back home, reality has gained control again and it ain't pretty. Bummer.

Naw....the Ms are pretty overrated if you just look at their record. The have the type of rotation that the Reds pad their numbers against.... And the Reds big boppers are mostly lefties which plays really well in Safeco.

It was Father's Day and I spent it with my son. It's been the same for 21 years, but this year we avoided the Reds. That's really sad, I know, but we did. We discussed it a lot. We've spent the last 20 years with the Reds, but this year, he said he had given up on baseball and especially the Reds. So, we went out to eat and he went to the lake. I watched the NASCAR race. Oh, I checked the score now and then, but I didn't watch.

This funk we've been in since 2001 has really worn on me. Summer has always meant the Reds to me, but it started really wearing on me in 2004. That was the year we discovered Miley was not a magician and the Reds tanked ending the season with 47 wins over the last 112 games.

2005 wasn't much better and Dave Miley was fired and Jerry Narron was put in as an "interim" manager. He remained (as you all know) to manage the club in 2006 and after a fast start was given an extension by new GM Wayne Krivsky. The 2005 Reds lost 89 games. The 2006 Reds lost only 82 games, but lost 56 of their last 100 games. From 2004-2006, the Reds were a pitiful 229-257. It was worse from 2001-2003 with a record of 213-273. So for the last six years of my life and my son's life, the team has been a horrible 442-530 (.455).

And it continues and regardless of what anyone says, this abyss continues and any hope of it ending is just that. Hope. Not much evidence exists.

But never fear, i'll be by the TeeVee and the radio tomorrow night seeing if just maybe the Reds might pull one out, but I'm afraid they've lost my son. Oh, he still wants to come to a game or two and considers himself a Reds fan, but as to following the Reds, I'm afraid those days are over.

Like I said, it's sad.

Not that I think it will happen but wouldn't it be funny if Narron was fired because his current team lost 2 of 3 to his old ;)
