Dear Jerry,

Unless EdE is injured, he needs to be in the game, learning and gaining experience (not to mention he's a better player than Jaunito). If Castro needs playing time, let him do it in L'ville or the Independent League.

I realize that you are concerned about saving your sorry, miserable job but don't do it at the expense of the future of this team (which you will not ever, ever be a part of even if you get a 20 game winning streak with Castro in the lineup).

Your buddy,

Rem

I'm sure Jerry feels that Castro needs his swings so that he can be sharp late in future games when he may be called on to pinch hit for Jr. or Dunn.

Or Jerry is showcasing Castro for all the scouts that are following the Reds for a trade as Jerry believes Juan is a five tool infielder who may bring a relief pitcher Jerry can use in the wrong matchup in the eight inning of a future game.

Or Jerry is just insane. I look for Valentin to be in CF Sunday, batting leadoff.

I think we are all forgetting that Castro didn't get into last night's 16-1 blowout, so he obviously gets tonight's start as a consolation prize. :D

Matt700wlw
06-23-2007, 09:38 PM
I guess, if Castro must play, and for some reason, he must...he's batting 9th.

However, this is AL ball, and that's like playing a pitcher.

I checked to find that Castro has faced Washburn before as a member of the Minnesota Twins.

July 14, 2005...Flyout to CF and a Popout to SS.

According to the pregame, Narron told Castro he would get him a start against a lefty on this road trip. "He's done a good job against lefties and Eddie's numbers have gone down against lefties for whatever reason."

He also said he doesn't like guys sitting for a week or more at a time without playing.

You know what I like?, putting the best players on the field at all times (barring the always needed day off) to win ball games.

Hey, I've been trying to bring back that spirit in the historical threads in ORG! :)

On this date in 1982, Landestoy hit 2nd and Barranca hit 3rd in the Reds' 5-4 win over the Padres. Meanwhile, Dan Driessen hit 6th, and Ron Oester hit 7th. Go figure.

Some of the league isn't stupid. Keep the ERA at a deceptive 4.50 and he might have a sucker, like Wayne himself, to palm him off upon for a solid prospect. At 5.00 and above, pretty much all decent prospects come off the table. Not saying I agree with it, but that I know how some GMs think.

Looking for Lohse to make a small mechanical adjustment next inning. He's turning his plant foot toward the first base side. Everything else is following through fairly well but his Fastball will drift all night if he doesn't correct it. His breaking ball could tend to be overthrown or over rotated if he gets in that same rhythm. This is the stuff that drives me crazy. Simple mechanical adjustments that usually go unnoticed.

The Mariners' offense sucks. They're all pitching and D.

It's a poorly constructed lineup.... righty-heavy offensively in a park that kills righties....

I wish they were all pitching though.....

Defensively it's a really nice infield minus Sexson who is horrid...

In the outfield, Ichiro may win the GG in center, Guillen is pretty good while Raul is, well, not Manny or Dunn per se defensively.

They really need Adam Jones in left but, well, the roster is so jacked up that it's tough to envision a way to do it. At least the solutions aren't doable be cause a certain bald-headed GM is invested in the guys that would have to be marginalized.

However, Jerry treats this like little league, make sure everybody gets their playing time....

I think he plans days or weeks ahead when guys will sit so somebody else can start, regardless of the state of things.

They could be 2 games out of first, playing the first place team for 2 games, and if it was Dunn/Griffey/EE's (whomever you want) turn to rest, they would rest regardless....

April 16, 1975...DD hit for Vuk in the 2nd inning and popped out to the thirdbaseman in foul territory. April 22, 1975...DD hit for Vuk in the 5th inning and walked.

Given a righty on the mound and the fact the left field is death to right-handed hitters, I'd load the lineup with lefties. Given left field is a premium defensive position in Safeco, i'd have my best defensive leftfielder there.

Given those caveats, i'd take your lineup and change out Conine for Hopper and Ross for Valentin. Both Conine and Ross could be on the bench in case the Ms want to bring in lefty death (Sherrill) in a late inning high leverage situation.

So the alternate lineup is:

Hatteberg 1b

Griffey rf
Dunn dh

Still, I would go with my original lineup, and bring Hopper in as a PR/defensive replacement for either Conine or Hatteberg as needed. (Conine would move to 1B if Hopper replaces Hatteberg.)
