If Reds management released Josh Hancock last season for being overweight, why did they then bring in Stanton and Guardado? I know things ended tragically for Hancock, but I'm just sayin...........

Stanton and Guardado are both older, so naturally they are going to get bigger. See also: Ken Griffey Jr and David Weathers
Hancock wasn't old.

Maybe they learned their lesson from the ridiculous decision to release Hancock.

Stanton has like 6 chins, yet still can't use them well enough to distract the batter to record an out.
He got it!

Todd Coffey isn't exactly svelt either.
The Reds easily have the heaviest bullpen in the league.... I wonder if Wickman is available next year?

Maybe SD Starter David Wells as our chubby reliever next year, anyone? Anyone? LOL!
He got it!

Perhaps we could add Ray King as a left handed specialist..... or sign Sidney Ponson to bolster the rotation.
It has been speculated that Hancock's weight was the public reason they gave for releasing him and the organization knew about the "recreation" which was a bigger reason for the boot.
With Eddie and Stanton, they've been in the league a long time. Giving a young player an off season directive is probably more about instilling discipline than it is about the directive itself.

It could have been an attitude problem with Hancock, or maybe the team knew he had a drinking problem. They should have.

I heard they were interested in making former umpire Eric Gregg a reliever until they found out he'd already died.

Stanton and Guardado are both veterans with a proven successful track record. Hancock hadn't established himself, was coming off an injury, and was competing for a job. Very big difference and not a fair comparison.

Or maybe they knew he had a drinking problem and didn't feel like dealing with it. Saying we cut him because of his weight is easier to say than we cut him because of his personal issues.
