I hope Freel can do better against lefties than what he was doing before he went on the DL.

Unless he's injured, Hamilton should be playing basically every day regardless of who is pitching. Considering we just had an off day, there is really no excuse here.

And Conine continues to bat clean-up against lefties. I'm sick of complaining about these line-ups, but the same problems keep coming back. It's only one day, but the same philosophy is still there.

And Conine continues to bat clean-up against lefties.

Perhaps because his OPS this season vs. LHP is .781. That's good for 3rd amongst Reds "regulars" vs. LHP. That's not good.

Once Dunn is traded, Hammy will play every day. They don't want three lefty outfielders against Zito. Can't sit Griffey v. Bonds. Dunn doesn't sit against lefties either.

Guess he could have sat EE for Freel tonight, which would have resulted in 250 complaints around here.

Interesting note on John Fay's blog about tonight's game.

Rob Butcher was kind enough to pass this along. It's courtesy of the Elias Sports Bureau...

Tonight’s game between the Reds and Giants will feature 2 players with a total of 1,335 home runs (Bonds 750, Griffey 585).

It is the highest home run total between 2 players entering a game since Cleveland played at Milwaukee on 8/1/76 and featured 1,341 homers between Frank Robinson (586) and Hank Aaron (755).

The game with the most homers between 2 players occurred on 7/17/73, when the Mets played at Atlanta. Willie Mays entered that game with 658 homers and Hank Aaron had 697 for a total of 1,355. Aaron homered in that game to bring the total to 1,356.

It's entirely possible that Freel in on the trading block along with everyone else.

If so it makes sense to 1) get him some playing time to prove he's healthy and 2) to blow sunshine up his skirt like he's an everyday player that can play numerous positions.

Doing anything else just devalues another reds commodity.

Personally I'll wait until after Freel steals a bunch of Hamilton's playing time before complaining about it although I know that just isn't the style around here.

Josh Hamilton has been not so good vs LHP this season. It's no travesty that he isn't in the lineup.

He'll be in the lineup everyday after the deadline...but, as others have said, it's time to show the rest of the league what Cincy has to offer.

I can see the *showcase* angle but don't really agree with it. One game here or there isn't going to impact Freel's trade value. The whole league knows his skill set.

Lefties on the other hand aren't as prevalent as righties. Lefties like Zito are even rarer. Sitting Hamilton tonight is a rather significant opportunity lost concerning his education.

I'm not sure how that's complaining.

It is really scary to look at what a great start this pitching staff started out with, and where it currently is. I don't know if it's Hume/ Pole/Narron or a combination of any of the three.... but it seems beyond bad luck or sally arms that is happening to the pitching this year.

That's still no reason. Boasting a tepid 781OPS over a span of 88ABs isn't really a great endorsement for batting cleanup, especially when you see he posted even worse numbers versus LHP in 2005 and 2006), it's more of an indictment of the design of this offense. However, a guy like EdE posted an 828OPS versus LHP over the span of last season, so might even try him there by default, if the manager is averse to stacking the LHH. Ideally, one of our trades will return a legitimate young, middle of the order high OBP power RH bat, but we'll see.

There have been a few games where pitchers threw no-hitters but lost. Matt Young threw one for the Red Sox in 1992 where they ended up losing 2-1. There have also been several cases where pitchers threw them for 9 innings but lost in extra innings.

Yes-several I think.

In fact the Reds won a game where they were no hit (http://wiki.answers.com/Q/Has_there_ever_been_a_'no_hitter'_pitched_with_a_s core_by_the_opposing_team):

On April 23, 1964 in Houston, Colt .45s' pitcher Ken Houston threw a no-hitter loss against the Cincinnati Reds. With the score tied 0-0 in the top of the ninth inning, Houston got the first out of the inning. Pete Rose came to bat, and bunted. Johnson fielded the ball and threw it wildly to first-base, allowing Rose to reach second-base on the error...no base-hit recorded.

The next batter, Chico Ruiz hit the ball off Johnson's shin to the third baseman, who then threw to first for the second out of the inning. Rose advanced to third base on the play.

Next up was Vada Pinson, who hit a ground-ball to second base, but second baseman Nellie Fox bobbled the ball, and his throw to first was too late. Pete Rose scored from third base on Fox's error. Frank Robinson flied out for the third out of the inning.

One run, no hits, two errors, one left on base.

The Colt .45s went down in the bottom of the ninth to end the game.

Some guy named Nuxhall was the winner for the Reds.
