View Full Version : 7/4/07 - Reds vs. Giants Happy 4th of July

From Trent:

Here's the Reds lineup, I'll get you the Giants in a sec, all I know so far is that certain player with an extraordinarily large cranium is not in the lineup

For the Redlegs:
Hatteberg 1b
Phillips 2b
Griffey rf
Dunn lf
Encarnacion 3b
Hamilton cf
Valentin c
Castro ss
Belisle p

Pete said he was going to use Valentin to catch much more, because his bat is needed in the lineup. "He's an untapped resource that we're not using enough," Mackanin said.

Pete was great before the game, very funny and entertaining. He started off by saying it was part of his contract that he wasn't supposed to manage a day game after a night game.

Castro and Javy. Yuck.

Hopefully it's to rest Gonzos' hammy or so he can get a look at them in action with his own two eyes.

Pre-game prediction: Dunn has a good day today.

Dunn splits:
Day games: 78 ABs, .360/.435/.867 for an OPS of 1.302
Night games: 214 ABs, .229/.324/.453 for an OPS of .777

Also we are facing a right-hander, Matt Cain, who has been pretty good this year.

Dunn Righty/Lefty splits:
Right-handers: .281/.369/.659 for an OPS of 1.028
Left-handers: .231/.322/.385 for an OPS of .707

One last Dunn split: GABP vs. Road
GABP: .308/.407/.664 for an OPS of 1.071
Road: .219/.297/.459 for an OPS of .756

So today should be the 'perfect storm' for Dunn: a day game, at home, against a right handed pitcher. Now watch him K four times....LOL.

He's obviously punishing Gonzo for not running out a pop fly last night. I love the move, it's just too bad that Castro is our only backup SS. If we see Castro again in less than a week, then I'd say 'strike 1' on Pete. Otherwise, nice accountability for a completely unacceptable move by Gonzo, one which could have had Gonzo yanked on the spot.

This season is over. If Gonzo did not run out a fly ball, do not yank him on the spot to show him up, simply show the club its untolerable the next day. If that is the reason that I'm extatic because someone finally gets how to discipline a team.

If that's the reason, then it's all good, and should be that way....don't hustle, don't play hard, sit down...but the only problem is, with Castro being on the roster, MacKanin has to use him in these situations.

Narron used him to get him some playing time, when he didn't deserve it (he liked to do that)...maybe MacKanin is also, who knows?

Please Wayne, move on without Castro - he serves no purpose playing baseball anymore.

Agreed. And, frankly, Gonzalez has seemed to be running on auto-pilot for a while now, so maybe this will send him (and others) the proper message. The downside is that it leaves you playing Castro, and his 408OPS. I wish Jerry would find us a suitable backup SS, to remove that problematic aspect of sitting down a middle infielder. Castro is nearing 100ABs flushed down the toilet, and that's just unacceptable.

Can Keppinger play any SS at all?

And why is he still in AAA?

Keppinger played Shortstop all the way thorugh high school and college. Given that he leads the International League in hitting, his bat would make up for the slight defensive downgrade vs. Castro.

CaiGuy

I really hope that we don't see too much of JV behind the plate. His defense makes my head hurt. He is never on the same page of the pitcher, and he would have trouble throwing Sean Casey out.

He is okay hitting against right handers, but, even as bad as Ross has hit, he isn't good enough to make up for his defensive shortcomings. And he should never be allowed to bat righthanded. Ever

I'm all about that...let's go younger wherever possible right now. has nothing to do with age, those 3 are/were completely worthless. Really doesn't matter who they are replaced with. The fact that the organization thinks there is value there is as damning as anything.

A.) What's Stone doing here in the first place?

B.) What in the wide world of sports would persuade Mackanin to go to him as the first guy out of the BP today?

Like Matt, I'm not certain, but it is also possible that evaluation plays some role in Mackanin taking an extended look at a few of his relievers. Probably the first time he's seen many of these guys in person since at least Spring Training (which featured a very different reliever mix than our current 'pen).

Then again, maybe he just a proponent of giving 'middle relievers' who are having some sucess through their first inning a chance to continue (rather than pushing a new button every few batters). Hard to tell at this point, I guess.

WVRedsFan

Pete's probably learning a lot in these last two games, but he's not learning enough. His two lineups have mirrored what Narron used to do (with largely the same results) and he just can't stay away from Juan Castro. Castro, to his credit got a hit and drove in a run today to raise his average to .180, but why? Is there some unwritten rule that says that Juan Castro has to start every 7th day?

So, Pete is 1-1. He's seen the Reds at their best and at their worst. He's probably thinking about what he's going to do next year and hoping that it's in some other city that has a pitching staff that can throw strikes. hit the corners, and keep hitters off guard.

Big Klu
07-04-2007, 10:50 PM
I don't pay as much attention to what's going on in the minors (especially at Louisville and Chattanooga) as I ought to, so I was surprised to find out that Jeff Keppinger is leading the IL in batting with a .373 average. (I knew he was having a good season, but not that good!) In my opinion, he could be a capable backup utility infielder (sort of a righty-hitting Jeff Branson), and he should be brought up yesterday. I would like to see a pitcher (maybe Stone) sent out to make room for him, so that the Reds go to a six-man bench. Castro would still have a role on the club, but it would be limited to backup SS and second (or third, if you count Freel) backup 2B/3B. And with the extra player on the bench, Castro wouldn't be called upon to pinch-hit as much, either.
