Pete said he went Hamilton leadoff and Freel lower because Hamilton's OBP is better and Freel's average with RISP is better. Just thought that was interesting.

Also, he liked Conine's numbers better vs the right-handed Morris

Different indeed.

Let's see how it works.

RedsManRick
07-05-2007, 04:11 PM
As long as Gonzalez are Ross are 7 & 8, the rest of the lineup is much less relevant. I really like Freel batting down in the order where his speed is more valuable -- and it gets Hamilton more ABs.

Interesting. If those two facts are indeed true, makes sense to me.

Boy, on what other team that Conine could have signed with would he have 80% of his at bats out of the cleanup spot?

He picked the right team to sign with. His agent should have a big bonus check from him this offseason.

Agreed and I guess if you are gonna sit EEE once a week or so then it might as well be vs. someone who hasn't had much success and isn't likely to face anymore this yr.

That seems to be a trend in recent years, guy no other teams really want ends up being the clean up hitter here.

This is not encouraging news for me. This lineup may be successful tonight but it will be inspite of the one who created it. The reasoning Pete used is simply flawed.

Conine has 13 at bats against Morris for his career while Hatteberg only has 7. It's frustrating to see a manager make a decision based upon so little data. This is flat out incompetent reasoning IMHO.

That sentiment gets echoed with his decisions concerning Freel and Hamilton. That was based upon 31 Ab with RISP for Freel this season and only 40 such AB for Hamilton this year. What's worse Pete used batting average as a criteria.

WOW is all I have to say..... :(

I edited because I hadn't read Pete's pre-game remarks about RISP, but as for why I'd move Freel down in the order when he plays...

Freel has a 249BA/308 OBP this season, coming off of a 238BA/340OBP post All-Star break last year, with each month looking worse than it's predecessor. He's been in steep decline for his past 400ABs, and I have no problem getting a young guy like Hamilton more ABs right now as our leadoff guy, given his 362OBP, the way he's swinging the bat with great superiority to Freel, and given his chance for improvement.

One thing about Bonds...a pitcher goes inside on him, he never gives a pitcher that eye like "what are you doing."...he gets hit, he never says anything about it, he just removes his body armor and trots to first.....and when he argues a pitch, which isn't very often, he's usually right.

Freel moves to left. Castro in to play 3rd. So Castro is in Dunn's spot in the order.

Not a bad substitution. Dunn/Castro's spot is due up eighth in the next inning.

I like that Freel is in LF, instead of playing CF with Hamilton moving to LF. I think that Mack should just put Josh in CF and leave him alone, and Ryan should go back to being the supersub LF/CF/RF/3B/2B.

Works for me.

Only one game, but Reds seem like a different team tonight so far. Just seem more aggressive at the plate and more confident overall. Maybe it's just that Arroyo pitched well and Cout was great. Pitching helps. Also, keeping Cout out there for 4 outs is a preferable use of the pen than all the switching previously.

I'm with ya. I hate the very concept of the LOOGY. If a pitcher can't record more than one out in an appearance, then I don't think he's much use on a team. I understand that sometimes you have to manage like it's the seventh game of the World Series, but specifically keeping a player on your roster so you manage like that all season long is a waste of resources and a roster spot, IMO.

Aug. 3-5, 2004 at San Francisco
(1) REDS lose 11-0 (ouch!).
(2) REDS win 8-7.
(3) REDS win 12-3.

Facts:
* REDS score 10 runs in the 8th (bizarro!) inning of game 3.
* The REDS pitchers of decision in games 1 & 2 have both passed away (Lidle & Hancock).
* Dunn hits 2 HRs in game 2 and 1 HR in game 3.
* Nick Lowry makes his 1st start of the year in game 1 for the Giants and throws a CG 3-hitter (his 1st CG in MLB).
* Casey goes 7-for-10 in games 2 & 3.

Good game. I only saw parts of it, but I think that Pete moving Hamilton to leadoff reaped dividends. Only problem I had was playing Freel at 3rd instead of Edwin and bring in Castro "for defensive purposes". That's a crock. Freel's batting .249 and mostly worthless at the plate these days and you bench the youngster. I hope Pete doesn't feel Freel has to be in every starting lineup. And I hope Pete doesn't feel he has to put Castro in every game. I have to wonder if our managers aren't getting a little pressure from the FO on that.

Anyway, a good victory. I'm still worried about Arroyo, but we'll save that for another day.

I wouldn't read much into Edwin not starting at 3B tonight. I think he was just getting a night off. Tonight was only the second game that Edwin hadn't started since being recalled from Louisville on May 22. (The other one was the 9-1 loss at Seattle on June 23.)

As for Castro--he was actually brought in as a defensive replacement for Dunn who was the next-to-last batter in the bottom of the seventh. So Freel moves to LF to replace Dunn (a defensive upgrade), Castro replaces Freel at 3B (also an upgrade--at worst a push), Castro isn't due up until the eighth batter in the bottom of the eighth inning, and Encarnacion is still available (along with Hatteberg) as a PH whenever Mack feels the need. I think it was a decent substitution.

More and more I like how MacKanin manages the bullpen. I have noticed before how much better Coutlangus does when he has a day off between pitching.

Most guys do respond better is they aren't warming up every day to pitch to one or two batters. Narron's multi-pitcher inning fascination definitely wasn't helping guys stay sharp.

I really like how Coutlangus slammed the door tonight. I figure Coffey will be another beneficiary if Mackanin provides a steadier hand at bullpen management.

I don't know. With this team's pitching woes (even theugh they pitched well tonight), putting in a defensive replacement says that someone is going to boot balls or not get to balls so that runs can be scored. With this team, it's all about those who could have terrific range to stop hits and Castro ain't it. The same could be said for Freel. You just have to know he's been told he can't have another concussion. So, you give up offense you might need (with only a 3-run lead) for defense that probably won't make any difference when balls fly out of the bandbox we call home.

The best thing for the Reds is to have the bats in the batting order if you need them. I seriously doubt that Castro or Freel will save a game with their glove. Dunn makes his share of boo-boos in left, but rarely when it counts. And Castro, for all the minutia that has been spread about his fielding powress, doesn't have the range everyone thinks he does.

Castro is a disease. Leave him on the roster and managers of all persuasions will use him as a defensive wizard. And when a bat is needed, his .180 average really helps the team if and when his glove can't save a game.

Noticed Coffey sprinted out of the bullpen last night without any bad effects. I wish they'd kindly tell Todd that he needs to save his energy for the batters. It's a pet peeve.

As for Cout, good job. He's going to be good with a manager who will use him in the right way.
