I am liking the cut of Mackanin's gib. I really am. Heeding OBP. Not being freaked out by the concept of putting his best hitters together, even if they bat left-handed, funny and informative in his press availabilities.

All pretty good stuff.

Good for him.

Mackanin said he'd like to try to get Valentin about three starts a week behind the plate. Javy said his defense and confidence was hurt when Jerry Narron said he wasn't going to use him much as a catcher. He said now he feels like he's back at spring training. He was out before the game working and has been doing extra workouts before the game since Monday.

Why?

Phillips is better than EE and Gonzalez is better than Ross.

Better hitters should get more AB's.

I disagree with the first part of the assessment. EdE's OBP is 40 pts higher than BPs -this year- and despite the bad start. EdE works counts better than Phillips and is less likely to give the pitcher an easy out.
Furthermore, with Griff behind him, he's like to see better pitches and probably would increase his power numbers.
BP is such a free swinger, I don't think he requires as much "protection".
As for speed, Encarnación is plenty fast if given the chance.

As for Gonzalez and Ross, the 8 position is a tough one to hit in.
So if you're going to choose between two bad hitters, I take the one that who handles pitches outside the zone better and put him in the 8 spot.
That's Gonzalez

In addition, it's nice to have a guy in the 8 slot who can actually score on a single from second (after the pitcher bunts him over). Gonzalez again.

Third, your main pinch hitter is a catcher (for better or worse). It's nice to put SOME space between your regular catcher and the pitcher, for those wonderful double switches.

Just my .05

Before this season, I would have agreed with you. But this year, Phillips has been head and shoulders better than EE. EE may get on base a bit more, but Phillips power numbers indicate I want him AB more than EE.

Gonzalez is simply better than Ross this year. It's no comparison.

The better hitters should get more AB's.

I don't get to listen to Marty, but it seems like his comments about Dunn border on being personal (based on what's posted by the listeners), and I don't think there's room for those kind of attacks from the booth. At the very least, he should be warned about getting personal, and start being somewhat objective in the booth.

I heard what Marty had to say yesterday about Dunn in the first inning, and I turned the radio off. Here's what I wrote about it this morning: http://www.redszone.com/forums/showpost.php?p=1405034&postcount=124

Now, I have always like Marty, I really do, Matt. I've listened to him since I was 12 years old, and on my deathbed someday, I hope to hear the faint sounds again of him and Joe calling a game on a hot, still summer night. That's how deeply ingrained it is for me.

But what he's been saying the last year or so about Dunn borders on the personal. I'm not sure what Dunn did to piss him off (banana phone last year?) but last night's comments were ridiculous.

Fired? No, I don't think Marty should be or ever will be fired. But it was very unprofessional of him. Thom was defending Dunn, and Marty was attacking. I turned it off because the stuff Marty was saying was simply untrue. Apparently I missed when he said Adam was a good kid, at the end. So for you to say that Marty was calling him a good kid- well yeah, apparently he did that, but you left out all of the other stuff he said prior to that.

If Kyle Lohse could do this at his salary, do you keep him? With good offensive productions behind him, He has eight wins this year....strikes out a lot of guys, and has huge promise....isn't he a great number 4-5?

I'm in a small minority on this board, but I really think Lohse has some good years of 200 inning baseball left in him. He's still pretty young, he's never been hurt, and he's got very good stuff. Some team is going to reap rewards on this guy, I think. I'd like to see him in Cincy, but I doubt it happens.

Here is a chart that I think more accurately reflects RBI%. There are two changes from the RBI% they use at baseballmusings.com. First, runners-on-base are pro-rated. A batter should not be penalized for walking or getting hit with a pitch or having to sacrifice bunt with runners on base. In that case the hitter doesn't really get the chance to drive in the runners. It is a losing proposition to swing at pitches out of the strike zone in an attempt to knock in runners. Walks turn into outs, not hits. Second, home runs are included. If you knock yourself in it counts just as much as if you knock someone else in.

PLAYER TRBI%
GRIFFEY 31.4%
CONINE 27.2%

ROSS 20.0%
EDE 19.6%
FREEL 17.0%
CASTRO 9.0%
MOELLER 7.8%

Junior tops the list as probably expected. A nice surprise in second is Conine. So far this year when he has had the opportunity to drive in runners he has succeeded at a fairly high rate. We are witnessing something rare tonight. An honest-to-goodness winning streak. Two in a row! Last winning streak was almost a month ago. June 10 and June 12th - another two-gamer. Hard to believe but the Reds' longest winning streak this year so far is three games. If they hold on tonight they will have 4 two-gamers and 3 three-gamers.

I don't know about excellent percentages, but, as with all offensive stats, look at what Juan Castro's doing. That would be the measure for poor performance.

I can't figure Kyle Lohse out. Tonight he was lights out. Other times he's clueless. Go figure. If they could harnass "good Kyle"...

As for Pete, you gotta remember he's faced two clubs heading south. The
Giants just arent a good club and the Diamondbacks are horrible right now. And he's at home. OTOH, winners make their own luck and he's using Hamilton, Dunn, and Griffey right. He manges the bullpen better than Narron and except for "Castro Love", he's making reasonable decisions. He's not a great manager, but he's a far sight better than what we had. The caveat here is that even if he's better than Narron, it should not be his job when all is said and done. At least I hope not.

Ron Madden

Just my .05

Very well said Oneupper, I agree 100%.

He said yesterday he likes Adam Dunn...he said he's a good kid, a nice kid.... I just don't think he likes the way he plays the game....Marty's old school. Home Runs are great, but he would prefer Dunn have the other tools...ESPECIALLY defense.

His comments aren't meant to be personal to Dunn the guy, just how he feels about the baseball player.

Dunn Hater fans are more personal than Marty - and sometimes on the air as callers

For every little bit of false information spit out by Marty more Adam Dunn Haters are created.
