View Full Version : Why no Dunn in derby?

I just don't get it. How come Dunn doesn't get invited to the HR derby? I believe he would have a real shot at winning. Does he get asked and declines or what? Never hear anything about him.

Probably because he was not an All Star.

Once again, Dunn has said he would not compete in the Derby unless he was named an all-star

Because you have to be an All Star to be in the homerun derby.

Howard being the defending the champ gave him the right (at least in my book) to defend his title.

Ryan Howard says " I was the 2006 Home Run Derby Champ, I get a pass." But anyone else has to be an AS.

You are correct though I would like to see some changes in this area.
Maybe invite some for just the HR aspect,in other words they would be in the HR part only.
Sort of similar to the NFL with their skills competiton.

:( I don't believe that Hee Seop Choi was an All Star a couple of years back. Having said that, all Adam Dunn has to do is do what all other 40+ HR guys do....make the All Star team....and he can participate.

I think the HRD participants should be chosen independent of the overall All-Stars, and should not be considered "All-Stars" if they contribute w/o having been chosen as actual "All-Stars"...

For instance, I'd LOVE to see Wily Mo in the HRD, not to mention AD.

Pretty sure it is true.

Okay lets get this straight. You do not have to be an all star to participate in the home run derby. Please do some research before you make these statements.

Eight players, who are generally on the All-Star Game rosters (though this is not necessitated by rule), are selected for the Home Run Derby and compete in a traditional playoff system where the players with the most home runs advance to the next round.

From Wikipedia you take this stance? You call that research?

That's comical.

Name me when a player has been in the HR Derby that wasnt an AS other than a reigning champion.

When you find something official, let me know.

Mole.. did a Reds fan really just go " Astros suck" ?? How old are you?

The reason Choi was in the HR Derby in 2005 is MLB did that thing where players represented their home countries.

I love how you slam someone else's research but then do none of your own. clearly you're wrong, now leave our forum. thanks

HUH? Mole...are you 14 years old? Let the adults talk.

Wikipedia isnt research. Its the 1st thing you get when you type in HR Derby. I could edit that very page right now and write whatever I wanted.

I may be wrong, but I am not accepting Wikipedia's word for it either. I have looked and cannot find the official rules of the AS game or HR Derby.

Now go back to MY Space.

Not to butt in to your guys head to head match but I too was "sure" as I thought Howard was a reserve. People can be wrong.
Now ding ding.....continue round ten !

Rafael Palmeiro, 2004

I didn't find the official rules anywhere (they appear to be constantly changing) but I found a list of every HRD contestant ever and of every all-star ever here...

HRD results:
http://www.baseball-almanac.com/asgbox/hrderby.shtml

All-stars:
http://www.baseball-almanac.com/asgmenu.shtml

I didn't have time to go through and compare every single HRD contestant to see if they were also an all-star that year, but I did check on MasonBuzz's claim about Palmeiro in 2004 and he's correct.

It's okay to disagree, but it's not necessary to call someone out. Would it be too much to ask that we maintain some semblance of civility in this thread?

NO it wouldnt. I was thinking the same thing when I was asked to leave.

You are correct about Pamiero. I wonder what the reason was that he was inserted that year.
