I'm glad Pete has broken up the lefties then. BP has been red hot since the break though so this lineup makes some since.

Freel is no longer a leadoff hitter...how long till the Reds notice?

I'm guessing about fifteen minutes after he's traded to a team that also didn't notice. Gotta keep up the illusion just a little longer.

flyer85
07-16-2007, 04:56 PM
I think they just hope Freel will snap out of it. The problem is that he has changed his approached and is now up there just hacking away which makes it very unlikely he will be turning it around. Freel's versaitility and relatively cheap contract probably make him marketable but I don't think he will be worth much.

oneupper
07-16-2007, 05:09 PM
Sorry, I don't see Freel as marketable at ALL. Who would want a sub-.700 OPS hitter (from an offensive park), who plays a barely acceptable IF, can't hit to justify an OF position and is owed $7 mm for 2008-09?

Maybe its his wonderful game instincts? [/sarcasm.]

If you find this GM, don't let him go before we make a slurry of deals involving equally stellar performers.

The Ryan Freel lovefest is wearing off...

This isn't a shot at anybody, it's a fact. It's becoming evident what he is...not an every day player, and a player with poor instincts. A player who hustles.....which is great, but doesn't use his head, and doesn't change his approach to improve that....a player that for every spectacular play has 2 or 3 mishaps that hurt the team more than help the team.

He's a guy you like to have on your team, and can help a team, just not in the role the Reds think he should be in.

Sure, he can add a spark, but can also frustrate you. He can cause a pitcher headaches, but has to get on base first....that in itself is often a challenge.

Good analysis, Matt. Looking at Freel's stats:

NAME G AB R H 2B 3B HR TB RBI BB SO SB CS BA OBP SLG OPS
Freel 58 214 35 52 11 3 2 75 12 15 31 10 6 .243 .299 .350 .649

you have to wonder why he continues to bat first, but hoping instead of knowing someone will do the job is a symptom the Reds have had for a long time.

KronoRed
07-16-2007, 07:10 PM
He has speed, that's why he bats first..that is in the book, same book that said bat Brian Hunter 1st.

KronoRed
07-16-2007, 07:11 PM
Conversely, how does he justify not batting him lead off if he's in the lineup?
A simple "he's not getting on base right now" would work, slide him down in the order and hope he snaps out of it, but Flyer is right, Freel is now up there trying to hit anything near the strike zone, forget working the count.

This is where it is dangerous.

Livingston has allowed 10 baserunners in 4 innings...and JB and MB are talking like he should be the Reds ace because he gets a couple of k's with the sacks juiced.

Livingston may not have the stuff to be a regular starter, but he really showed me something there. Beautiful pitching with the bases loaded. Knew exactly what to throw, got ahead of all the hitters, and got out of it.

Belisle got two key strikeouts the other night in the seventh, I think also with the bases loaded. Terrific pitching by these guys.

Nice comeback inning for Livingston.

I hope they let this kid stick around and give him a look-see. What have we giot to lose? He had a good ST and went down to Louisville and performed well.

He's not a power pitcher, that will strike out alot; but he throws strikes, seems to get a lot of groundballs, and will give up then hits.

That's the perfect analysis of Ryan Freel. He's basically a good utulity player who can play 3 or 4 games a week. If he plays more than that he can hurt you.
