Hey at least Conine isn't 4th. Still wouldn't mind seeing Dunn hit right after Griff, but apparently that's just a pipe dream.

On another note, I'm glad to see Keppinger finally get a start. I don't see any future for Lopez, and I think Keppinger is just the kind of hitter this team needs. I'd like to see him get a shot at 3rd - I think he would be an upgrade over EE. This team needs guys who are professional hitters and EE just hasn't shown consistency driving the ball the other way. Do you have any thoughts on Keppinger's future?

Did Keppinger not STING that single to center last night? He's a fricking wasp with a bat.

I was hoping he'd get a start -- and maybe another tomorrow...

Christina Karl from BP had this bit of snark to add re: keppinger

—guys like Keppinger are sort of like the rum raisin pints in the freezer section of a grocery store TBNL—there always seems to be too much of him in stock, but that really doesn't mean you need to feel any compunction to contribute to the corporate cause of creating shelf space. No matter how hany singles he slaps, he's a freezer-burned shade of “Johnny Ray: the Immobile Years” if everything goes right.

More and more, these snarky baseball journalistes remind me of gossip writers, preying on the weaknesses of people who have risen into the public eye (in the case of athletes, based on talent/merit). I have no respect for that kind of writing.

Wow, a 27 year old with his 4th team and 186 at bats to his credit is already better then EE.

Wow.

Couldn't agree more. Tabloid style journalism is not truly journalism. Opinions are great, the best part of life at times, but the snarkiness really needs to be checked at the door sometimes.

Keppinger is not a hall of famer in the making. We know it, he knows it, but he's typically hit for a good average no matter what position he's played. It's the fact he's not a DH type, but not the best fielder in the world that holds him back.

BP's gotten a little better as they've been burned a few times by trashing guys that ended up not being so bad but yeah, it's gets pretty tiresome.

Somebody ought to quietly sit Mr. Phillips down and tell him that all his fancy leads, bluffed starts, and dancing on the basepaths only hurts things. I don't remember Maury Wills or Lou Brock doing any of that stuff.

Somebody ought to tell Reds management that a right handed power hitter in the middle of the lineup might help against lefties.

Saltalamaccia a .300 hitting catcher (technically)

Must be nice :)

Marty makes a point...the Braves aren't afraid to play Saltalamaccia at first base, to get his bat in the lineup even though he's a catcher by trade, while skipping AA, but the Reds keep saying Votto isn't ready. Marty says if he's a first baseman, then why are they playing him in left field? Get him up here, and put him at first base...that's what he is.

You know what...he's right. Joey Votto is a first baseman, let's keep it that way and bring him up....now. Quit trying to make him something else. If you want to do that....you don't do it in AAA...

A 5.34 ERA for a reliever is equivalent to about a 6.50 ERA for a starter.

Why keep doing that to the REDS fans? If you're going to have someone pitch horribly, let it be a young guy so he can get the experience.

I'm going to pick a nit here. With two outs the Reds let Renteria advance on 'defensive indifference'. The Reds have a catcher that throws out 40%+ but they let the runner advance without a throw. Had they thrown out the runner the ballgame was over so, to me, it's worth a try.

Even if you throw the ball into CF the runner will be at 3rd; not much difference from having the runner at 2nd. (shrug)

Take a shot, a pretty good shot actually considering who is running and who is behind the plate, and possibly end the ballgame right there.

The indifference was the first baseman playing back. In that situation, no throw gets Renteria.

I prefer some more range at 1B in that situation. The runner is irrelevant.

Oneupper, thanks again for the play-by-play. I wasn't able to be in the game thread during the game tonight, but I enjoyed reading your PBP just now.

Bronson Arroyo pitched a great game, and David Weathers was able to put out the fire. Something has to be done about Mike Stanton, though.

Ken Griffey, Jr. just continues to amaze! I think we are seeing just how good a healthy Junior can be.

I also really like Jeff Keppinger. I think he can really help out the bench as the utility infielder. He is versatile defensively, and he can hit!

Why take EE out?

Absolutely Stupid! Why remove your best defensive 3rd baseman?

It wasn't stupid. It was a double-switch, because Mack wanted to keep Weathers in the game. (The 9-1-2 spots were due up in the top of the ninth, so Weathers would have been scheduled to lead off without the double-switch.) Yes, the Reds' best defensive 3B was taken out, but the best defensive SS (Lopez) entered the game in his place. The Reds could have taken Ross out in the double-switch, but that would have removed the best defensive catcher.

I don't have a problem with removing Encarnacion in this instance, because double-switches are sometimes a necessary part of the game.

The "baseball guy" mindset continues. After tonight's game, Mac was heard to say:

"I'm going to keep putting (Stanton) in those situations. He didn't pitch as well tonight as he wil in the future."

What? Are you blind, Pete? This guy has nothing but a slow curve that intelligent hitters will figure out the second time they see it. Let him be a positive clubhouse influence and keep him on the bench.

He can't pitch anymore.

Along the same lines...

With the Reds up 2-0 in the 5th, Jo Jo Reyes (the pitcher) singled to put runners on first & third with one out and the top of the Braves lineup coming up.

With Phillips and Keppinger at DP depth, and Conine holding...the pitcher.., LH Willie Harris had a monstrously huge hole to hit through on the right side.

Seems to me that you forget about Reyes - he's not gonna try to swipe second under any scenario. He's a pitcher. It's basically going to take a triple to get him home. Instead, you pull Conine off the bag to close the gaping hole on the left side of the diamond.

However, I don't think we've seen the end of Mike Stanton in a close game.

I'll have to disagree on that one. JoJo is a young guy, who was used as PH the night before. He can probably run a bit.

Pull Conine off the bag and Jojo's taking second. I don't want to put the tying
run at second with one out.

With a wider lead...you can do that. Up only two, no way.
