C. Trent said in his blog that Phillips asked for the day off. So I rescind my criticism of Mack.

Braves announcers just said 10 of the last 13 Reds managers were hired mid-season, going back to 1982.

That doesn't sound right. The Reds have hired 13 managers since the beginning of the 1982 season, but I think "only" eight have been hired in midseason.

Russ Nixon (midseason 1982)
Vern Rapp (prior to 1984)
Pete Rose (midseason 1984)
Tommy Helms (midseason 1989)
Lou Piniella (prior to 1990)
Tony Perez (prior to 1993)
Davey Johnson (midseason 1993)
Ray Knight (prior to 1996)
Jack McKeon (midseason 1997)
Bob Boone (prior to 2001)

Interesting question: what's bigger, the difference between a Freel AB and a Dunn AB or the difference between a Freel fielded ball and a Dunn fielded ball?

I know one thing, a single botched at bat won't cost us the game. A single botched up fielding play could. The question is the difference in their likelihood. Who wants to do a study?
