I'll be going tonight if the weather's ok.

Shame no Ross. He's got 5 HR in my last 3 REDS games.

On the lineup:

MacNarron insists in splitting Griff and Dunn with Phillips. It was and continues to be a bad idea.

Just FYI, Adam Dunn is actually on the field right now. Wearing a Reds hat. But maybe he was traded to the Longhorns, though, because he's wearing a Texas T-shirt.

Freel is a disease caught by managers of all kinds. He just looks good when he hustles, even if he's always out at first.

On the road trip he is 3-29 (.103), scoring 6 runs, walking once and striking out 6 times.

In the last ten games, he's 8-42 (.190), scoring 8 runs, no walks and 8 strikeouts.

This is a leadoff hitter?

The Reds have three fresh arms in the bullpen tonight--Coffey, Burton, and Stone. Additionally, Coutlangus faced only one batter yesterday, and Stanton pitched only one inning. Weathers pitched one inning, but it was his third consecutive game, and Saarloos and Gosling each pitched 2+ innings.

I think you're right Pedro. Belisle has made great progress this year on his control, AND in being a full time starter.
Now that he pitches a lot more within the strike zone...he needs to get a bit more strategic....as opposed to just thrashing to find the zone like years past.

I think this is where ED's comments come to fruition...he needs a catcher to help his harness his good stuff and good control by calling a good game.

Matt, he does great whenever he works with Ross. His pitches aren't good enough to overcome the poor pitch-calling by Valentin. Valentin is clueless on how to call a game and on the strengths and weaknesses of opposing batters. He's either lazy and doesn't study enough or he's just stupid. I'm guessing some of both.

He might be better suited for the BP. It all depends on how his arm bounces back. If he can't throw very often (ie- needs 4 days between throwing), he might not be suited for the BP, even though his stuff has "Bullpen" written all over it.

Who's going to start, instead of him?

I say give Dumatrait a shot.

Joe Garagiola just said the other night that more catchers are the cause of pitchers poor games by not understanding which pitches are working tonight and which ones aren't. The pitchers end up getting blamed for what in reality was the catcher's poor understanding of pitch-calling and location and opposing hitters strength's and weaknesses combined with what a pitcher has going that night.

Here's Belisle's starts when he works with Ross. He's a good starter. The REDS want him to be able to work with other catchers and mature to the next level, though, so since Narron was let go, they've had him working only with Valentin. His last start with Valetin (not listed) was good. They worked well together, but today they've regressed back to what they were before...an ERA around 10.00 whenever he and Valentin get together.

While Javy is not anywhere near the greatest catcher in the world, he is not the only reason our pitching sucks. Sometimes, pitchers simply suck.
Even Johnny Bench could not stop Woody Fryman and Dale Murray from sucking.

I'm with you there. I can't see the game close enough to have been able to tell that. He was clearly leaving the fastball over the plate then.

Belisle is still learning a lot, and he has great potential as you can see from those starts he's had with Ross, and the start he had last with Valentin last time. I wouldn't trade him or move him to the bullpen, but continue to work with him the rest of the year and next and see where it goes.

It was only 9.63 tonight....so progess IS being made. :)

Except for the fact that the list omits the July 14 start against the Mets. Belisle gave up 1 run in 7 innings. Catcher -- Javier Valentin.

These lists don't prove their point. His Ross games were good early, but later in the season there are some clunkers with Ross catching too. A number of ten hit games.

Belisle is a Redszone fave. But the numbers show that the Reds fourth and fifth starting spots have very high ERAs. You cannot win with a 5 plus ERA in the fourth spot and an even higher ERA in the fifth spot. I thought he pitched well against the Mets, disappointed that he came back with this performance tonight.

Going into next year, if the Reds continue to start pitchers with 5 plus ERAs in their rotation, they won't get much better.

Big Klu

Jared Burton was really bringing it tonight! Very encouraging.

As for Valentin, I thought that he was setting up hitters pretty well--it's just that Belisle wasn't hitting his spots in the 4th and 5th innings. Valentin and Belisle did a really nice job on Hanley Ramirez earlier in the game though, finishing him off with a four-seam fastball.

Valentin did a nice job working with Burton tonight.

I think he is just saving the pen. Double switch, Dunn made the last out. He wants to avoid having Coffey's spot coiming up again because he had a fifteen inning game yesterday and used a lot of relievers. My guess is Coffey is in for the duration here.

Hah, this GG replacement just called Hopper Hooper.

BTW, I just wanted to say, I like Burton. Krivsky once again with one of his moves I love.

Ramirez grounds into a 5-4 fielder's choice. 2 outs.

Phillips is an All-Star. He turns the double-play really fast.

Haha! I caught that, too! He quickly corrected himself in the next sentence.

Overall, I have liked his game-calling, especially when you consider that he isn't that familiar with the Reds.

Coffey should have let that one roll.

I'd let Stone close, but he already had Stanton warming while the REDS were batting in the 8th.

Not a good play by Coffey.

Bad move by Coffey. That would've gone foul. EE was waiving him off.
Now Cabrera up w/2 on.

He's seemed decent to me. I dont like that he keeps asking Welsh questions though. Welsh should talk as little as possible.

Stone has been warming up while the Marlins have been batting in the eighth.

I would play the matchups with Stanton and Stone.

Good job by Coffey. He strikes out Cabrera on a high fastball. 7-5 Reds after 8.

A rested Coffey looks good out there. He had some velocity against Cabrera.

Nice pitch by Coffey. Cabrera K's on high 94 mph heat.

Way to K Cabrerra, Todd Coffey! Made me sweat, but a great 8th inning for the REDS bullpen.

I think Reghi is asking Welsh questions because he doesn't know that much about the Reds. (I think he's a Clevelander.) But he's doing a capable job.

I would use Ross as the PH for Coffey as the second batter in the top of the ninth, and then make a double-switch to leave him in for the bottom of the ninth.

Lee Gardner in to pitch.

Phillips again strikes out swinging on a pitch way outside.
