Good to see both teams ahering to the "if a guy has no power but can make a little contact and run, bat him second" philosophy.

Good to see both teams ahering to the "if a guy has no power but can make a little contact and run, bat him second" philosophy.

Craig Counsell "knows how to play the game" (direct quote from Marty last night).

And he's not likely to hit one of those annoying rally-killing home runs.

I believe Hall is supposed to be activated before tomorrow night's game.

Yep. From espn.com:

Jul. 23 : Hall (ankle) will play two games with the Brewers' Arizona League affiliate then join the Brewers Wednesday in Cincinnati, where he'll be activated from the disabled list, reports the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

Looks like the Reds have the right players in the lineup (maybe Freel instead of Hopper, but that can go either way). I would consider a few minor changes in the batting order, but overall it's not a bad lineup.

Freel has been an out machine, but has been at his worst against LHP.

His splits this year are incredible: OPS .383 vs. LHP, .821 vs. RHP.

Hopper should have started last night. Oh well.

Do I need to rant about the lefty splits? OK, no.

Very true on both counts. Look at the outfield. Your choice is either Freel or Hopper in center. Makes you long for Hamilton to get well today. Offensively, this team is a mess. Only a major overhaul will mend it, but it looks like no deals will be made unless Krivsky panics (pray he doesn't).

Hopper pops out on the first pitch.

Well. Gallardo at 42 pitches (small victories?)

He's surviving by getting the outs when he needs them. Hatt and Hopper made it easy in the first. He leaves one up for Phillips and the two power hitters walk. Then he gets the 27-YO rookie to pitch to and gets him on a fly. In the second, the 1st and 3rd yields Hopper and again early in the count, an ill-advised swing from another kid who should be on someone's bench yields a needed out. He can't dodge everyone all night, though.

Hopper helped a lot last night with his baserunning in the 12th inning. Got down the line and was safe at third. He's a decent backup player. Hasn't had good at bats tonight, though.

Reds keep trotting out starting pitchers with 5.2 ERAs, they will lose a lot of games. So-called fourth starter has 5.2, the fifth starters (Bailey, Milton, Saarloos) even higher. That's a lot of bad innings, bad games. Livingston's numbers have been better so far, but small sample size.

This offense is doing the same thing it's done for three years (HR or nothing) and it has resulted in low run totals. I don't have a solution. It's just an observation. But I do know that getting rid of the power and exchanging it for young slap hitters is probably not the answer either, especially at the corners.

Take Belisle's ERA and Ross' BA, and consider how much these guys play, and you start to understand the Reds' record. You can't have 5.28 ERAs in the starting rotation. You cant have .190 batting averages in the regular lineup.

You can excuse a guy calling him a "fifth" starter or a "defensive" catcher. But these kinds of numbers in regular rotation/lineup slots will lead to a losing team.

Easily and 10 times out of 10 attempts. If the slow-footed Dunn can reach the ball, which he did, he just bumbled the attempt to catch it, Hopper would have been standing there waiting for it, as he covers twice as much ground as Dunn does.

This offense can't move runners.. its homerun or nothing..

If my figures are correct, the Reds scored 820 runs in 2005 (5.03 per game), 749 runs in 2006 (4.62 per game) and 473 thus far in 2007 (4.65 per game). In the meantime, they've given up an average of 5.03 in 2005, 4.94 in 2006, and 5.15 in 2007. That run differential was .41 in 05, .32 in 06, and .21 this year. Some improvement is seen here, but not enough. Those statistics show me nothing much has been done to improve the club. The offense has scored an average of .38 runs less than two years ago per game and have given up an average of .12 runs more.

This screams of complete overhaul. And we don't seem to be getting any closer unfortunately.
