I'll wager that Mackanin is far less likely to be 'double-switching' today.

I'll be impressed if Livingston has a decent game today. That's a pretty sturdy group of RH hitters.

Losing him hurts, but it's more than just that. Their bullpen is always on the verge of being bad, even when it's good (with two volatile performers: Turnbow and Cordero).

The Cubs' middle relief has been very solid, on the other hand.

Sarloos 3 yr spilits:

As a Starter: 48 GS, 269.2 IP, 4.47 ERA, 3.30 K/9, 3.54 BB/9, 10.31 H/9, .294 OAVG, 1.01 HR/9
As a Reliever: 22 APP, 35.2 IP, 4.04 ERA, 4.04 K/9, 3.28 BB/9, 9.34 H/9, .268 OVAG, 1.00 HR/9

Looks to me like he's marginally more effective in relief, like most pitchers. In either case, he walks too many and doesn't strikeout enough to be effective long term. He's a mop up man and emergency starter in my book. He certainly isn't short relief in a close game.

When I say at this point because of where the season is. over...if a veteran guy isn't getting it done, give the younger guys some seasoning. If he pans out, the team is better for it, if he doesn't, at least you know.

You can shop/trade for quality relief later...either this season before the deadline,, or the offseason. With the Reds standings, the offseason seems more realistic.
