That looked close enough to me that if Dunn hadn't just given up on the ball, he might have been able to trick the ump into thinking it bounced off the wall.

Would Hopper be told to return to third? Would Berry be kicked out of the game?He would be out. I saw a huge argument in a Dragons game this year when the umpire ruled a runner out because they said he had accidentally touched the 3rd base coach even though he really had not. But I learned then the rule is if you touch the 3rd base coach at all you are out.

I'm sure a lot of others had the same feeling as me when I saw Coffey running in from the bullpen -- his fat bouncing up and down -- ... "OH NO."

Well, we have witnessed Mackanin's first terrible decision. No reason to take Livingston out in that situation -- especially not for Todd Coffey. Coffey chokes when the Reds have the lead -- it's well documented. Right Cowboy? Ha. And of course it was on something soft as usual. An 0-2 curve ball no less. What a joke. And I wasn't even a bit surprised.

Then Gosling is in there and I'm like "Now we have a poor man's Bobby Livingston out there." Just brilliant. I know Livingston was pitching on short rest, but that was awful. Just let him finish out the 6th. Some managers get way too caught up in pitch counts and BS such as that. Just manage the game and don't out-think yourself.

By the way, what's the latest on Harang? Is he pitching tomorrow? I'm sure it's been discussed, but TIA for any info.

Just got home from the game. Some observations:

Livingston pitched OK--not great, but not badly either. With a high pitch count, especially when pitching on short rest, I probably wouldn't have sent him out to pitch the bottom of the sixth. (I would have let him hit in the top of the sixth, though.)

When Coffey came in, I turned to my brother and said, "That runner on first is going to score." Sure enough, he did. I like Todd, but if he is still on the 25-man roster tomorrow, then Wayne should be dismissed immediately.

When Stanton got out of the bases-loaded jam with no runs scoring, I said to my brother, "Like Jesse 'The Body' Ventura used to say, 'It's better to be lucky than good.'"

Burton pitched well. I think he's getting better.

I was glad that Edwin homered in a clutch situation--maybe that will help his confidence.

I was very confident that Keppinger would do something positive to lead off the ninth. I didn't expect the homer, but I knew he would get on base.

Adam Dunn came through when the team needed him most! I was glad it was a two-run shot, because I figured Weathers would give up one run. As I told the Pirate fan sitting next to me after Dunn's HR, "Don't give up. The Reds bullpen has to pitch one more inning."
