why would valentin hit 6th in any sane lineup? I get wistful for Narron's the catcher bats 8th lineups when I see this.

Substitute Hamilton in CF for Hopper and you get an idea what the 2008 might look like if the Reds don't pick up Adam Dunn's option.

Has a reason be given for Dunn's absence from the lineup? Curious that he would be sitting with RH Tomko on the mound.

I still think there is zero chance that Dunn's option gets declined.
If Dunn is gone, the Reds will get a better LF than Keppinger.
BTW, is there some reason why Dunn isn't in the lineup today? he just had 2 off days a few days ago.

I agree that any rational team picks up Dunn's option. Well, I did say rational so.....
Rem
Dunn has an interesting career line against Tomko - .188/.381/.563/.943. He's 3-16 with 5 walks. 2 of his 3 hits have been homers.
Thanks to markymark in The Sun Deck for the info on Dunn.
Mackaninin on the pre-game show said he was just giving Dunn a day off. He didn't ask for one, it was just a manager's decision.
He went on the say that he needs Keppinger's bat in the line-up as much as possible and was excited about seeing him in the outfield.

That could be the most disturbing quote of all-time. If Cincy "needs" Keppinger's bat in the line-up "as much as possible", then a fire sale of biblical proportions is in order.

The scoreless streak is over after Kent hits a sac fly.
Jeff Conine's replacement for next year singled just ahead of Kent's sac fly. Just thought I'd mention it. :)
Interesting since Dunn just had two days off ealier this week.
Mackaninin on the pre-game show said he was just giving Dunn a day off. He didn't ask for one, it was just a manager's decision.
Dumatrait pitches out of the jam. Kemp hits into a 6-4-3 to end the inning.

Off day for Dunn against a righty?
FYI, Javy Valentin's 3 yr splits:
vL: 102 AB, .137/.254/.196
vR: 507 AB, .286/.340/.501
We should be asking why he's not batting higher. In fact, we should be asking why he's the right handed part of the 1B platoon instead of Conine. It would be a great way to get him more PT and perhaps he could be used to give Votto a break next year against tough lefties. Phillips has a .247/.301/.400 line versus righties this year.

You way want to reread those splits. Javier can't hit lefties.
Hopper singled to get the Reds half of the 1st started.
Okay, so Hopper apparently (according to Tom) misplays a flyball that directly leads to a Dodger run, but when he leads off with a single Marty's Hopper lovefest begins.

I think it's because he wore down last year and it's a zillion degrees out and the Reds shouldn't worry about "Winning Now" plus, they're not going to sign him so why does it matter.
Or he needs a break because he plays everyday and has been for the last 4 seasons.

Last year he wore down and got kicked for it, this year he gets 3 days off in a week (which is a rarity in August) and it seems he's getting piled on again.

Never said anything about Dunn. Why do you think I'm piling on him? Just curious why the MANAGER apparently choose to sit him again. If the MANAGER said it was because Adam was feeling under the weather then I wouldn't have been curious at all. This appears to be a MANAGER decision.

I don't beleive that anyone said anything negative about Dunn or mangement; we were simply inquiring as to whether or not anything was wrong with Dunn, as it's a bit unusual for someone to get a day off just after 2 consecutive days off, especially for someone who plays as much as Dunn.

But Coffey's gone, so who is Pete going to call on to "manage his loss"
"Many times it’s to protect the other pitchers so you can use the right guys whether you’re winning or losing. If you’re going to lose a game and are way behind, you can stay behind and be ready for the next game. There’s an expression among veteran managers, 'you’ve got to learn how to lose a game, too.' There’s a lot of truth in that so you’re prepared to win the next one. It gives Pete a little extra flexibility with his bullpen -- Krivsky

If not, they should...ESPECIALLY if a run scores.
No, they are just balks.

Hopper would have scored anyway balk or no balk. Furcal's throw to the plate was late...even Steiner is admitting it. It would have been a steal of home for Hopper.
Intangibles, man. Intangibles.
Pressure baseball. Keppinger broke from first. Pitcher threw over. Looks like a rundown, then Hopper scores. Balk call was really irrelevant, Hopper would have scored anyway.
Great aggressive play.

Dodgers announcers pointing out that Hopper likely would have scored on the play anyway as Kepp probably could have kept himself alive long enough in the rundown for NoHo to score.

According to the Dodgers announcers it was pretty much Biemel's normal pickoff move. Biemel had Kepp dead to rights.
Well, IMHO, it was a balk because Biemel's foot and knee came back, behind the rubber and he then threw to 1B.
As far as I understand the rule, if the pitchers foot or knee breaks the plane of the rubber, he must throw home.
The Dodger announcers still have no clue (surprised?). This is the PrimeTicket crew and PT (again IMHO) is really bargain basement baseball telecasting.

I know Hopper has amazing speed. You look at his defensive ranges for LF, CF, and RF, and his are a whole number higher than anyone else on the team at every position. 2nd in the league in bunt hits with only limited playing time.
He is the perfect 4th outfielder for our team behind Hamilton, Bruce and whoever. Good with and occasional start, or even a short stretch for an injury replacement, excellent agaist LH's, great pinch-runner, and his pinch-hitting this year has been out of this world.

I agree. His knee went halfway back to 2nd base then threw over...easy call.....although it was the home plate ump that called it...strange.

Division winners always have great relief pitching.
This problem needs to be solved.
Along that topic. It looks like the Cardinals are going to win the Central Division again. Amazing! But, they do have better pitching coaches than other teams in the Central. Franklin is dominating this year. You can't tell me that he has any more talent than he had last year. It's got to be the coaching. Isringhausen is dominating again.

- Kemp grounds to second, 1 out
- Young doubles, his 4th hit of the game, Ethier in to pinch-run
- Pierre lines out to left, 2 outs
- Martinez with an RBI single to right
- Stanton relieves Burton
- Loney singles to right, Martinez to 2B
- Furcal grounds to second, 3 outs
4-4 after 7.5

Broxton is struggling a little bit in August and he doesn't do as well on the road.
Overall righties and lefties are both hitting .223 off of him, and with runners on base opponents are hitting .221 off of him.

That just sucks. Leadoff single by Phillips, a guy with 20+ SB's, and a patient hitter up next, and we don't even attempt to steal a base. Yet, management is always willing to give up a sacrifice with Freel on 1st and Junior on deck, so they can walk Junior to pitch to the #4 hitter.
I know Hatteberg hit the 3rd pitch, and maybe they didn't get the chance to steal as they wanted a good pitch count. But they should know that with Broxton, they aren't going to get that as he doesn't walk batters and is usually pitching from a good pitcher's count.

Add in payments for LaRue, Wilson and counting Jr.'s salary at $12.5M and even prorating Lohse's salary you come up to about $75M.
