Dumatrait is trying to get Lee out with nothing but breaking pitches out of the strike zone. Probably the best plan when you're running your dead-straight fastball up there at 86-88.

Oh wait...91 MPH. Nowhere near the zone. Sigh.

It's amazing...if he's still here come November, Wayne's #1 priority over all others (including veteran presence, the RH part of the 1st base platoon, etc) should be pitching. This team never has pitching and I am starting to come to the realization that they never will unless a HUGE shift in organizational thinking takes place.

DoogMinAmo
08-15-2007, 10:27 PM
Dumatrait's numbers are entirely unimpressive. Righties especially kill him, but overall the league is batting .408 against him. Small sample size be damned, that is awful.

At least he get Ramirez to fly out. 57 pitches through 2 innings, ERA just under 9 for the season. I think we will see him get pulled form the rotation soon enough.

That's right, let's make Guevera the new starter. Give him three tries and if he fails we try someone else. Maybe Votto can pitch. Give him three tries.

Please. Dumatrait faced a tough righty lineup before a Wrigley Field crowd after an hour and a half rain delay. His third lifetime major league game.

He has always taken awhile to adjust at each new level. The guy is going to be ok.

If you want to try young pitchers, you have to give them an opportunity to break in.

My point with Guevara wasn't starting him. It was pitching him. Giving him a chance. The guy is mowing them down in AA (75 K's in 50 IP, 164 in 128 ip, last two years) and he has been forgotten. It wouldn't bother me if the bullpen wasn't the abortion that it is.

And what's with this thing with Dumatrait? He is awful. 11 innings, 29 baserunners. When has he ever adjusted? High A ball? My goodness the guy is not a young kid that just needs a chance, he's a 26 year-old (a full year older than Guevara) in his 8th year of pro ball, that hasn't dominated anyone for along time. Bullpen, starter? Who cares when the kid gives you 11 innings in 3 starts.

My goodness, unless he somehow finds a way to not walk a batter every other inning, he'll never be that great because HE CAN'T MISS BATS.

I could care less about Dumatrait. I think it's a bigger waste that a guy like Guevara (that misses bats) is not given a chance in this crappy bullpen. I mean, he could serve a purpose. Say tonight for example, when Dumattrait goes 2 innings, he could shut them down and at least give us a chance unlike garbage like Santos.

He said that Ryan Theriot was a sparkplug-type of player, and that Lou Piniella likes to give opportunities to players like him. Then he said (paraphrasing), "Just like Billy Bates. He had several key at-bats down the stretch in the 1990 season."

Bill Bates is remembered for two things:

1) The infield single off Dennis Eckersley in Game 2 of the 1990 World Series (his only hit as a Red), and then scoring the winning run on Joe Oliver's hit.

2) He raced a cheetah from the Cincinnati Zoo during pregame festivities the night the Reds clinched a tie for the NL West. Bates won when the cheetah actually caught the bait the zoo handlers were luring him with.

There's little value to be gained by sitting Hamilton for Norris Hopper due to matchups. Hamilton needs reps versus lefties.

Especially at this point, this season needs to be looked at as a training ground for 2008-2009. If I've got a guy on my roster I see as a starter for next season, I want that guy to get as many PA versus his worst matchup as he can.

Absolutely. How else is he going to learn to hit lefties if he doesn't hit against lefties? I know that's an odd concept, but what in the heck do we have to lose by trying to improve the quality of Hamilton's bat and his defense in the Outfield. He needs all the PT he can get at this level. However, as a club that out of the race, I think the Reds owe it to the teams that are still in the race to put their best foot forward when playing contenders. It OK to treat games against the Pirates, Astros, Nationals, and Giants as extended spring training. But the Reds should put their best out there when playing the Brewers and Cubs.
