Jermaine Dye just signed a 2yr 22 Mil extension. Will this
do anything at all to possibly get Dunn to sign an extension
with the Reds? Thoughts?

Byrnes gets 10, Dye gets 11, what should Dunn get?

13? 15?

Apparently he's worth about 5 million and not a penny more.

His value is in the 14-16 million range. He'll get paid either way.

I would think it would be more in the 13-15 million range.

His numbers compared to Dye and Byrnes are much better. . . someone will give him at least 15.

Its a 2 year deal... its not exactly back breaking.

I would think the fact that potential free agent outfielders are being signed would put pressure on the Reds to pick up Dunn's option

they should pick up his option and try to sign him to a 28 mill 2yr extension..

According to Cot's Baseball Contracts the 2008 option year for Dunn is for a base of 13 million with award bonuses that could push it as high as 16 million. How easibly reachable those award bonuses are I have no idea. Two comparable (IMO) free agents this past winter got 6 yr/96 million and 8 yr/136 million deals respectively. Adam Dunn is at least as good as both those players IMO. Adam Dunn will be a year younger than both those players were when he hits the free agent market. It will be two seasons later than those respective deals were inked, and salaries generally tend to rise over time. If AD were to sign with the Reds for anything close to 5 yr/75 million, it would be a blessing. I think 6 yr/100 million would be a low-end figure.

The only way to keep him is to sign a 2 maybe 3 yr deal to keep costs down. IMO

109 million dollar payroll of the white sox v 70 million of the reds :dunno:

If you told me the reds were going to sign dunn to a 2 year deal I doubt i would be upset. its the 5+ one most of this board is clamoring for.

Unfortunately, when Dunn becomes a free agent he is going to have the leverage. If he signs a two-year deal I would be shocked.

We do not know he will be a free agent. It is possible Krivsky will sign him to an extension in the off-season.

The Reds have the right to exercise an option for 2008 on Adam Dunn. No team has any control over him beginning 2009. If, during this off-season, Adam Dunn and his agent agree to negotiate an extension it will be from the point-of-view of a free agent. It will be a gesture of courtesy. The situation is similar to Carlos Zambrano. While not yet technically a free agent, Zambrano had the leverage in the negotiations. Also, why would Adam Dunn only sign for two years and assume all the risk of a potential career-ending injury, when the market clearly shows that players of his caliber get a minimum of five years on a deal? If I was AD's agent, the least I would advise him to sign for on a two-year deal would be for 40 million. 20 million a year. After all, Dunn would be assuming pretty much all of the risk. While not officially a free agent yet, Dunn and his agent will be negotiating like one.

He's too young to sign a 2 year deal. He wants the guaranteed money. 4-5 year deal minimum. $15M per.
