It's a hot breeze. But at least the air's moving. Bet it'll be stifiling in that ballpark, though.

The Reds have won 6 out of their last 10 including 6 out of their last 9 against teams with a >.500 record. This could be their 3rd series win in a row.

DoogMinAmo
08-23-2007, 07:46 PM
Phillips leadoff single, Dunn deep fly out to left, Hattie a run scoring double, Javy walks.

Runners on 1st and 2nd, 1 out, EdE up.

DoogMinAmo

EdE a ground rule double, to dead center, runners at 2nd, 3rd, 1 out, 2-1 Reds, EZ up.

Chipper Jones with a nice play robbing EZ of a double down the line, then throws home to get Javy. Runners on 1st and 3rd, 2 out, Hammie up.

I've only seen a couple of Keppinger plays at SS so far, and he looked a little slow on those plays with and a little slow getting the ball out of his glove.

How was he on the turn of that last double-play?

He looks solid but not particularly fast or smooth.

He has only 1 error at shortstop in 88 chances, for an .989
fielding percentage. He has a .867 RZR. (He has fielded 52 of 60 balls in his zone). He has also fielded 5 balls out of his zone, in 170 innings (1 every 34 innings).

Alex Gonzalez has a .961 fielding percentage, and a .854 RZR.(fielded 193 of 226 balls in his zone). Gonzo has fielded 30 balls out of zone in 784 innings(1 every 26.13 innings).

All told, Keppinger does not seem to be a liability at short so far.

Fielding stats from the Hardball Times (http://www.hardballtimes.com/thtstats/main/index.php?view=fielding&linesToDisplay=50&orderBy=zone_rating&direction=DESC&qual_filter=0&season_filter%5B%5D=2007&league_filter%5B%5D=2&pos_filter%5B%5D=6&Submit=Submit).

Don't have the game on here, did Eddie look any better than his past couple outings?

Got behind Willie Harris, but got him out on a grounder. Got behind Kelly Johnson and walked him. I'm not sure what the count was to Chipper Jones (1-1 maybe?), but Jones flied out. He got behind Teixeira too, but was able to strike him out on a full count.

As I said on another thread today, Reds need to get Eddie to take an incentive laden contract for next year. If healthy, he is a fabulous reliever. You can go through 15 minor leaguers before finding somebody as good as Guardado if he has anything left. I'd like to see him back next year after he's recuperated from the surgery.

I think I understand why Eddie was brought in when he was.

The Reds have 3 relievers left.

Eddie and Weathers can likley go 1 inning only.

Sarlooss will be the last guy who will pitch untilthe game is over or his arm falls off (whichever comes first).

So the choice was between Weathers and Eddie, and I think they prefered to us Eddie when the LH hitters were up as opposed to using him in the 10th vs. (likely) RH hitters.

That's probably as good as explanation as any. Now that the game's going to the 10th, the expectation (or hope) is that Weathers is now in to pitch the 10th. If the game goes to the 11th, well better hope for a serious stroke of luck if Gosling and Saarloos are all that's remaining to choose from.

Eric_Davis

Thanks so much, MGB!

Now, let's win it in the 10th and send these clowns out of town losers of 3 of 4.

I noticed Atlanta's outfielders were all playing right in front of the warning track for Griffey. Since I happened to be at the game last night and tried to pay attention to the Braves' defense, I noticed that they have more defensive positioning amongst their outfielders than pretty much any other team I've seen.

The Reds, on the other hand, have quite minimal defensive positioning amongst their outfielders. They do have some shifting, because I also saw that, but it was just a step or two and not much more.

2nd & 3rd, one out, and a gimme grounder to the pitcher.

Why run? Make the P field it, look you back, turn and make the throw to first. Especially with a "speedy" guy like Ellison at the plate.

Worst case is that you are left with 2nd & 3rd, 2 outs instead of 1st & 3rd (giving the Braves the force at 2nd) with 2 outs.

I'm not sure what Keppinger was looking at there, but oh well. The Reds blew a chance, but they've still got a shot to win the game.

I'm a bit surprised Gosling is in right now instead of Weathers. I'd expect Gosling to be in for at least two innings, perhaps three. Once Weathers comes in, I'd be shocked if he goes any longer than two innings max.

I will say this ... if a starting pitcher has to come in and pitch this game ... it better not be Aaron Harang. Arroyo started last night so one would have to assume he won't be pitching no matter what.

With 2 outs, first and third and second and third is no difference (especially when everyone knew that Hamilton would be walked).

Hatteberg made them make a tougher out. A run down is always tougher. More throws to screw up.

Notice how Hatteberg easliy saw the pitcher catch the ball and still ran slowly down the line to draw the throw. It's the text book play in that situation.

I'd like to think you're right (if the Reds can win it now or in the 13th, that'd avoid the scenario altogether obviously).

Problem is Gosling pitched 3.1 innings and threw 57 pitches on Monday night. Granted, he's been a starter in the minors and can be stretched out a bit, but I'm not sure how far he'll be able to go on two days rest after a 57-pitch outing.
