What, the last two days were so successful, that Dunn & Hamilton had to be benched? What team throws out "Friday Specials"? On a day that YOUR BEST PITCHER IS PITCHING?

Egads. I'll say something here, I said somewhere else. The Reds remind me of Unfrozen Caveman Lawyer. Their managerial ways and customs confuse and frighten me.

Dunn is 0 for 10 with 5 Ks against Willis.
I was hoping they would consider Keppinger in left and Gonzalez at shortstop for tonights game. Now Im hoping Ellison looks better at the plate than his previous at bats since joining the Reds.

He's a better hitter than what he's shown. You can't expect much when a guy rarely gets up there.

Belisle is their best pitcher?

That is a lovely lineup. If only Mark Bellhorn was in it it would be perfect.

Dunn was due for a day off, especially with all the hot weather. Giving him the day off a after a 99 degree day and 12 innings against a tough lefty seems like a good idea. I would have sat Jr and left Hamilton in the lineup ... Pete needs to take every decent opportunity to save his legs, his HR power has gone south over the last 6 weeks.

The disappointing part is seeing Ellison out there, there is no reason for that.

Disagree. If you want quality pinch hitting ABs out of your bench players, they need an occasional start. Willis's L-R splits are outrageous -- tonight's a good night to get as many righties in the lineup as possible.

A manager can't manage that way.

No. Probably not...but he can put the best lineup on the field.

Maybe the heat is wearing some of these guys down, and I get that, but Dunn AND Hamilton sitting at the same time doesn't make the team better....I don't mind Hopper (he obviously isn't the power threat the other two are), but Elison does nothing for me.....

Which means tonight he'll hit a homer. :D

They're also off on Monday.

I guess I won't nit-pick...this team somehow, someway, keeps finding ways to get it done as of late....keep it up!!

Patrick Bateman

I hae zero problem with off days. They are a neccessity. However, I'd rather seperate them instead of doing it at one time.

That way Hopper can get both starts as a replacement instead of Ellison who I really don't want to watch play baseball. Hopper is starting to look pretty good to me.

Anyways, I'm guessing Dontrelle Willis is the reason Mackanin is doing otherwise, so that when Dunn and Hamilton do play it's against righties. So it comes down to how badly you want Hamilton and Dunn and/or Hamilton getting the best match-ups.

As bad as this line-up is, it probably does make sense since some days off were coming. Griffey generally seems to handle lefties a little better than the others, so he doesn't need the match-ups as much. It's not like the Reds have 1 quality bench option that you really need to get plenty of at-bats over Ellison like I was suggesting.

Matt700wlw

I told you you needed your eyes checked.

You must have your "beer" goggles on.

I'm wondering if there is some reason why Gonzalez can't play unless in an emergency. He's been back 2 days and hasn't seen the light of the field.

It would seem obvious to put Keppinger in LF, and Gonzalez at SS.

I'm assuming Gonzalez is not really available.

Only by comparison to Ellison. Put Otis Nixon next to Ellison, and even he looks like a viable option.

Otis Nixon was a regular for most of his 16 years in the majors.

He was a very good fielding CF, though I seem to remember a weak arm.

His lifetime OBA was .343, and in his 6 peak years he was about.360OBA with about 55 steals and 15 CS.

I'd suggest that Nixon was, nothwithstanding his .657 lifetime OPS, a viable major league player.

As a leadoff hitter, OBA was way more important than SL%, and he filled a premium postion quite well defensively. He also stole quite a few bases.

He's certainly head and shoulders above Hopper.

I've been pushing for a Gold Glove for this guy for quite a while this year. His fielding has improved so much this year, it is ridiculous.

NOTE: I would give about anything to have four other ape-like horses in the starting lineup, and a couple of more in the pen. I am simply baffled at how Harang is seemingly ignored by the rest of the media when it comes to today's top pitchers.

Willis gets Jr to K swinging. He is being pulled now.

I would have had Keppinger running with Jr. up. If he makes it to 2nd, the shift has to be taken off to keep Kepp from stealing third too. That increases Jr's chances of getting the hit.

Great job Phillips!!! Triple to RCF. He's had a huge game both offensively and defensively tonight!

BPhil with a triple, Kepp scores a big run. 5-3 Reds,2 out, Cantu up.

Hattie in to pinch hit, a lefty is brought in from the pen, taylor Tankersley. Any relation to the former Card?

I would have preferred Magic to this. Stormy walks Treanor, then a single to De Aza, 1st 2nd, 0 out.

Just how you want to start the 9th inning with a 2 run lead.

Whats wrong with bringing the winning run to the plate?

There's a big out, and a nice throw by Ellison.

That may be the first compliment Jason Ellison has recieved in a Reds uniform

Fly out to Ellison in LF. Runners hold.

It's nice to FEEL suspense again in close games by the Reds...

That means there is hope...even if it's unlikely hope.

If the Reds could have put together this streak last season, the Cards would have not have won the World Series. Too little too late for this season? Probably, but hopefully not. The real question is are they doing this because of Mac, because there is no pressure, or because the players are getting in a groove at the same time.

What's that....9 losses in a row for the Marlins now?

A little bit of all of those, IMO, plus some injury "luck".

If Castro, Freel, Ross and Gonzo don't go down...Hopper, Kepp and Javy see little playing time.

Those three are hitting .397, .420 and .389 respectively in August.

I'm baffled. That lineup really had no business winning. Even Majewski pitched about as well as could be expected.

Doesn't make a lick of sense to me, but I like it.

Ultimately, winning ball clubs have depth enough that any player called on can get the job done. I know that's not exactly what happened last night (Cantu and Ellison as I recall didn't have big nights), this club now is finally performing as I had thought they would this season - being reasonably competitive, having chances in games.

It was a fun game to watch and a great game to win. And the night at the ballpark was far more pleasant than I had anticipated.
