I would also like to give props to whoever came up with the nickname Country Kepp. I have no clue where I heard it but I use it incessantly.

This Barone guy is no better than Shearn at least. Based on their AAA numbers they have actually been quite similar. So even though the Reds aren't throwing much of a pitcher out there, at least the opponent isn't either.

And the Marlins are resting their regular thirdbaseman.

That can't be bad.

Is he Ray and Robert's brother?

I believe that he was the younger, and uglier version of Robert (imagine that!). Apparently Daniel didn't have the awkward stage presence of Robert, and as such was out of luck as an actor.

But we all know that the Reds seem to get blanked by new guys all the time. Thankfully, he is not a junk tossing lefty, otherwise it could be a CG SO.

I'm quite pleased with Shearn today. He's shown he's a cut above guys like Dumatrait.

He's not good by any means, but he'll probably throw around 7 innings today and give the pen some rest. I mean he's good enough that he won't get pounded every time he takes the hill. He's done his job today, but I'd still hope the Reds are looking for a more serious 5th starter replacement if they are serious about getting back in the hunt.

He's retired 12 in a row and thrown 83 pitches, 53 for strikes, through 6 innings. Depending on how he gets through the 7th, I might let him go 8.

I have been impressed with him when throwing from the windup, but as soon as the Marlins got runners on they were hitting him up. He still has delivered a great performance today, when the bullpen has been worked hard recently. He has earned another start, but I would not be shocked if he does not continue this pace.

I agree and just note that there seems to have been more than a couple close calls on the warning track... but I haven't seen them... anyone watching able to verify?

Well I mean when you are a guy like Shearn you are always going to walk a tight rope.

He doesn't have put away stuff yo any degree. He'll have his decent starts like today when he can keep the ball over the plate and keep guys off balance with his yacker. Because of his arsenal he's going to give up plenty of hits and homers. Today Florida didn't trot out a great line-up, and as a result I think Shearn was able to get by.

So it's not that surprising that there were close calls and such. I'm happy Shearn got by today and that was given the chance with the current circumstances, but I hope the Reds are actively looking for some cheap alternatives to give the team a fighting chance.

Amezaga grounds into a 6-4 fielder's choice. Reds win their 6th straight 9-3. Shearn gets the win in his debut.

6.5 back...5 weeks to go.

The fact that I just pointed that out is just plain stupid.

The Reds are at .500 for the first time since April. That makes me so much happier than it deserves to.

Aw dang. That sounded a little optimistic since the division leaders are barely over .500 themselves.

What was the stat I heard on TV then?

Billy Bray looked good again today with a scoreless 9th and two strikeouts. Bray and Burton have been very impressive.

This bullpen has a chance to be pretty darn good here soon. Brad Salmon and Marcus McBeth are two righties with good stuff at Louisville. Tyler Pelland has been terrific since shifting to the bullpen. Josh Roenicke and Pedro Viola have had dominant seasons and both of those guys could reach the majors sometime next season. Hopefully Krivsky has learned his lesson about old relievers.

I don't want to start a whole thread for this, but the Tuesday doubleheader at Pittsburgh doesn't even START until 5:05 pm? Is that right?! Crikey, who's going to play the second game? We're even just a few days away from the 40-man.

The Reds are going to be zonked a good part of the week after that. I don't like this. I can only hope that the Reds wrap up both those games tidily in nine...

Does anybody know why they didn't at least push the first game back earlier?

It is 5:05. They are planning on giving Junior one of the games off and Dunn the other game off during the DH.

By the way the Cubs just lost the Reds are only 6.5 games out of first.

I saw Majewski pitch today, and his ball is moving again. Not sure what adjustment he made, but it's moving away and down from RH hitters. Maybe he's just finally healthy??

If Coffey can make that same adjustment (and I think he can), this can turn into an very good BP.

Actually the Reds do not handle uniforms in that way any longer. George Grande explained yesterday that Majestic does all of that now, and that the Stowe family was able to fix it for him mid game, once the mistake was realized.

When I was a kid, the Reds uni's used to be cleaned at Nu-Look Conlee cleaners on Queen City Avenue. As we drove home from my grandparents house, you could see the uniforms through the window- whoever was having a hot streak had their uniform on the end, in the display window.

But he's been with the team for a few weeks now. Was it misspelled before yesterday or did Majestic just decide to change the spelling for yesterday's game?

Whatever. If he hits that way in that uniform maybe they should keep it on him

Good question, but it was the red Sunday home uniform; maybe it was the first time he had worn it? That's my guess.

And why would Majestic spell his name right on the home and away uni, but not on the Sunday red one?

Great pic of Harang with Cincinnati spelled wrong; or is the "i" hidden in a fold of the jersey??

No, it wasn't; here's what I could find on it...

Can we buy a vowel

The first "I" in "Cincinnati?" was missing on the uniform front of pitcher Aaron Harang during a game last week at St. Louis.

Harang finally switched to a different jersey, but not until after the Cardinals scored three runs en route to a 5-1 victory.

"That's the last time I wear that jersey," Harang told the Dayton Daily News.

Harang wore the same jersey for the first four days of this trip, but wore a jacket on top of it so nobody noticed.

"After the first inning, I came to the dugout and saw (pitchers) Paul Wilson and Eric Milton looking at me funny," Harang said.

"What up with that?" Wilson said.

"What?" said Harang.

"Your jersey."

Said Harang: "I thought I spilled something on it but Paul said, 'Cincinnati is spelled wrong.

Reds equipment manager Rick Stowe took the brunt of the abuse, especially because the game was televised. "The clubhouse guy from Arizona called me and said, 'What kindergarten did you fail?' " Stowe told the Daily News. "I always check the back of the jerseys for the players' names, but never thought about the front."
