Hopper hardly gets to play anymore, and he is killing lefties. I am sure he will get in as a pinch hitter in one or both.

Griffey sits in the second game, giving us an outfield of Hopper, Ellison and Dunn? I hope that's a joke. Ellison doesn't deserve to start anywhere anytime. Just play Hamilton regardless.

Especially if the team is "in the race".

Of course, that's debatable. In our minds they are, but I doubt the reality is they are. Whatever that means.

I jsut hate to see guys like Ellison started over Josh Hamilton. He does so much more than hit in a game. It seems there is always one outfielder on the Reds that is clearly a 4th or 5th outfielder that ends up starting that shouldn't.

I will be shocked if Ellison plays the second game and Hamilton sits. My prediction for game 2:

Dunn in left, Hamilton in center, and Hopper in right.
Infield: EE at 3rd, Gonzo at short, Phillips at 2nd, and Hatte at 1st, and Ross catching.

I think lefties may have more throuble with Gorzelanny than Maholm. Lefties are only batting .179 off Gorzelanny, and righties hit him at a .270 clip.

Against Maholm, the game 2 starter, lefties hit .230, and righties hit .284.

Therefore, the amazingly logical lineup that Pete is running out there stacks almost all righties against Gorzelanny in game 1, while using more lefties in game 2 against Maholm. It looks like Pete might have taken a little look at the stats! I like that....

They're about to play 10 games in 9 days. And it's still pretty hot out there. Playing your "studs" in all 10 of those games would be akin to the discussion going on in this thread: http://www.redszone.com/forums/showthread.php?t=61945

Now... the argument about him being on the roster in the first place... maybe.

Amen. Besides, how's Hamilton going to learn to hit lefties...if he's never allowed to hit against lefties?

Ellison is the outfield version of Juan Castro.

I don't agree that lefty hitters should play against all lefties for the purpose of letting them "learn" to hit lefties.

Hamilton is weaker against lefties and having him strike out 7 or 8 times in a double header is not optimal. He may play game two, but this pitcher in game one is very tough on lefties. So it is appropriate to sit Hammy for this game.

It's too bad the Reds don't have some better righty hitters. So, instead, they use Ellison in this game, bat him eighth, maybe he contributes defensively or gets a hit. I'm sure if they had Soriano or Vlad to play left field he would be in there.

I'm not an Elizardo Ramirez fan -- never have been, likely never will be. Doesn't do a lot of things well, makes a lot of mistakes in the zone, and can't throw strikes on a consistent basis.

Ramirez is all over the place right now, and that could put the Reds in a bind given the doubleheader. If he gets yanked early, the bullpen will be destroyed by the end of the night. If he stays in, he's liable to get lit up. This looks to be one of those games where the offense might have to explode in order to pick up a win.

Runners on first and second, Phillips hit a flare to the OF which it looked like Nady caught on the fly, he threw to 2nd and it appeared to be a double play, but the ump ruled the ball was caught off a bounce, so since junior didn't run, he was forced out after he and Phillips both stood on first. Really just a bizarre play.

If there was any game in the series we were destined to lose, this was it.

They've got their best starter on the mound and he happens to be in a hot stretch and is left handed. We are a great hitting team vs.right handers but other than Philips, are poor against LH pitchers.

We had a similiar chance against Willis were we trotted out the mostly RH lineup in hopes of countering the LH pitcher who was also death against LH hitters. It worked that time.

We have our worst of our 4 starters going in this series.

The result isn't surprising, but are chances are better in the next 3 games.

Not as long as you have dreams of the post-season and are on a roll, IMHO. You play your best everyday until you're out of it. It's not like Dunn or Hamilton is tired. And we need offense as we see the score of 6-1 now. Ellison and Hopper are not going to give us offense.

Just for the record, I'd like to point out that it is no coincidence that the Reds overall record has improved with each member of the team who has switched to wearing the reds socks again.

If a few of them start wearing the old stirrups and sanitary hose, they can start printing playoff tickets.

I sure like the look of the "hose" and stirrups better than the long solid socks. Looks stupid to me.

Horrible managing there by Pete Mac. Letting Ellison hit in a close game? Bad decision.with Cantu swinging a hot bat I would have let Cantu hit since you knew Grabow would face Hatty.

Mac hasn't done a very good job. My guess is the game ends and Dunn never comes to the plate. He hit a ball of Grabow between the stacks last year.

Hatteberg is a favorite of this organization while Cantu is the new kid on the block, thus the change. Batting Hatt against a lefty (which was sure to come) just means you've burned a hot hitter you didn't mean to burn.

FWIW, Dunn was on deck to bat with runners on when Ellison GO.

MY question re: Hopper is this: does he bunt so much because no one's figured out how to stop it, or does he bunt so much because he doesn't hit so well? :dunno:

not with a RHP on the mound

I know, but I hoped if I typed it he would actually swing at a pitch, and it worked. :P

A little bit from column A, and a little bit from column B, although I think word has gotten out about how to stop him.

Absolutely. The big guy isn't that tired and batting Ellison there was criminal.

Took the words right out of my mouth.

And Tracy's managing this one like game 7 of the World Series. He's going to burn his whole bullpen before this one is over.

{cough} experience {cough}Pete went to Hatty vs grabow(win Tracy), because a lefty was on the mound Pete stayed with Ellison(win Tracy), save marte for Jr(win Tracy) and now has Capps and Pete has his order constructed so Dunn won't bat until the 5th hitter.(win Tracy).

so Narronesque because Jerry was always saving something for events that never happened. Pete has his chance to get to the plate as the go ahead run and maybe get him a 2nd AB against Capps in the 9th ... and he passed.

You must be very frustrated, because there are going to be a lot of games during a season where you hold someone back for a later situation that may never occur. Not exactly a realistic expectation. You take the opportunity when it presents itself(doesn't matter the inning), otherwise you end up like Jerry. I remember a game last year when Wedge caught Narron with his pants down by sending up Hafner in the 4th with the bases loaded. It was the decisive AB in the game and it was the 4th. You take the opportunities when they come, it is as simple as that.

BTW, Pete won't send up Dunn until Ellison anyway, he wasted an AB on Ellision that he should not have. Dunn may bat in the 9th but he could have hit in the 7th and 9th.

Phillips leads off with a single and now Hatteberg's up. Hopefully Hatteberg is able to reach base safely, though the potential double play is always a problem.

Why would that be catching him with his pants down? I would categorize that as a gamble that paid off by the opposing manager. Wedge doesn't manage like that every game. But I would never use an exceptional situation to prove my rule, but that's just me.

Game was over the minute they sent Elizardo Ramirez to the mound. Other than Eric Milton, there is no Reds starter I feel less confident sending out to win a game than him.

He's mediocre in every sense of the word, and the sooner the Reds realize that the better for everyone involved.
