PITTSBURGH -- The Reds have acquired OF Buck Coats from the Cubs for a player to be named and cash. He will be sent to Louisville. No word if he's related to Buck Swope

Coats played 18 games for the Cubs in 2006. He played for Class AAA Iowa this season, hitting .303 with 11 home runs and 59 RBIs.

Here's the release:

CINCINNATI - Cincinnati Reds Executive Vice President and General Manager Wayne Krivsky today announced the acquisition of OF Buck Coats from the Chicago Cubs in exchange for a player to be named later or cash considerations.

Coats, 25, this season batted .303 with 11 HR, 59 RBI and 18 stolen bases for Class AAA Iowa. His 19-game hitting streak from June 23 to July 14 tied for the fourth-longest this season in the Pacific Coast League.

Coats had spent his entire career with the Cubs organization since he was selected in the 18th round of the June 2000 draft. Last season he made his Major League debut with Chicago, batting .167 in 18 games. He hit his only career home run on September 24 off Aaron Harang.

The Georgia native was a Midwest League All-Star in 2003 with Class A Lansing and a Southern League All-Star in 2005 while playing for Class AA West Tenn.

Coats will be optioned to Class AAA Louisville.

He's the 40th man on the 40-man roster.

No starting pitching, no sense. There's a been a freakin log jam in the outfield before Krivsky too over. Now just adding more, and a left hander at that.

I wonder if he's simply compiling players to be used as part of another trade. Sometimes you have to make a move that's part of an entire sequence with a goal in mind.

This is a terrific deal for a ptbnl. There are so many positions that are right now being filled by crappy no future players. Why not get a guy for basically nothing that has a shot to be a decent player? His stats look in no way bad. I think he could help this team next year. Maybe we have ourselves a Rajah Davis on our hands. Maybe he was undervalued when he was in Chicago and we got a steal. GO REDS!!!

Coats actually hits Lefties better than Righties.

vs Left -- .311 AVG, .811 OPS

vs Right -- .300 AVG, .793 OPS

I think you'll see Ellison gone before long. I also think they are trying to find another cheap but decent outfielder in the mold of Hopper, so they can get rid of Freel's $4+ million in the offseason.

I truly believe WK is molding this team for some offseason dealing. Trimming the fat and finding quality utility players at a reduced price is part of the gameplan, so he can spend the REAL money on what we need.

He seems to be another good reserve outfielder like Hopper. He is a .300 hitter in the minors, has limited power, and can steal a base. I would imagine he would help our bench next year. I would like to see him show some success at the MLB level next year, however.

Why do the Reds need another outfielder though? We have Hamilton, Dunn, Griffey, Hopper, Bruce, maybe Votto, Keppinger sometimes. Even if we lose Dunn and or Griffey we should still be ok.

Is Coats just a AAA filler?

He was so impressive in AAA, he is due to be a September Call-up.

I dont know about that, he may be a little more than that. Not a star or anything but a backup outfielder, he did bat .300 this year and only 25 I think.

I realize the distaste for Ellison is universal, but let's try to discuss Buck Coats on this thread.
