Well, he does have an OPS of .856 vs RHP this year. The OBP is only .333 though.which suggests 6 or 7 hole.

The problem the Reds have is none of the RH hitters are good OBP guys and we know Pete(and Jerry) loves the L-R-L-R stuff.

Sad part is a Hamilton, Votto, Jr, Dunn quartet to start the lineup would scare the hell out of any RHP. Maybe if the Reds got early leads those late inning ABs wouldn't mean as much.

Somewhat unrelated, but I thought I'd see where some other former Reds batted in their first games. I got as far as Perez and Bench, both of whom batted 4th or 5th, but I noticed something in Bench's first game which, were it to happen now, would have given half of Redszone strokes - in the bottom of the 9th with no one out and Tommy Helms on first base, Chico Ruiz (bench me or trade me) pinch hit for Johnny. Oh my, how we would have howled. JB, BTW, went 0-3 with 2 K's. Whatta bum.

The fact the team is hopelessly out of it would be a good reason to bat Votto higher in the order. It would give him a better chance at seeing good pitches.

Maybe it's the TV feed but, when Joey hit that ball there was no sound----usually when that happens it means the ball was perfectly struck. The results would also indicate that. :)

Today I've added Votto to that small group since it's the first time I've had a chance to see him bat.

Yep, and your comment on Phillips is ironic considering he broke Morgan's single season franchise HR record by a Reds second baseman. Phillips may now have Morgan's record, but he still isn't in the same universe as Morgan the overall player. Phillips would have to add around 100 walks and 40 stolen bases (at a clip of 80-85 percent) to what he's already doing to actually be the next Morgan. That's a difference of an ungodly amount of runs.

"Maybe in an instructional league game, I can't remember," Votto said. "I'm not complaining."

Votto, the Reds' top position prospect, had 22 homers and 92 RBIs for Triple-A Louisville this season before becoming a long-anticipated September callup.

Many Reds fans may not yet realize it, but a significant chunk of Votto's offensive worth is his ability to take walks and get on base. Votto's not going to hit .325, and he may not hit 30 homers, but he'll take his share of walks and get on base. If Reds fans are going to like him long term, they'll have to accept the premise that his offensive worth revolves quite a bit around the base on balls.

2006-07: Votto's PA/BB is 7.88. Per 550 plate appearances, that's 70 walks. Per 600 plate appearances, that's 76 walks. Per 650 plate appearances, that's 83 walks.

A while back I compared him to a left handed hitting Kevin Youkilis with a little more strikeouts and possibly a few more homers down the road. And that would be perfectly fine by me.

I finally watched the film clips from this game just now. The first thing I wondered is how on earth Votto hit that pitch so far - it was way down and away and he put that thing in one of the deepest parts of the park.

The other thing I just noticed, which I liked a lot, and it was unheralded was after Votto's good defensive play throwing Delgado out at third when he tried to sneak around, was that EE was ready to fire the ball to second, I'm guessing in case the runner wasn't out at first. It's good to see that little extra.
