What's with the love of low OBP guys in the 2 spot?

remdog
09-11-2007, 04:26 PM
I was hoping to see more of Votto but with Mulder starting I was already thinking Cantu at first.

It is good that Hamilton is getting a start against a lefty. With Mulder coming off an injury and (reportedly) soft-tossing maybe Josh can bang out a few hits and improve his chances of playing against lefties next year.

I wonder what holds EE back from ever getting a spot higher up in the lineup.
The OBP is there (.350) and he certainly can run.

Cantu
vR: 959 PA, .279/.318/.454, .772 OPS
vL: 397 PA, .263/.295/.447, .742 OPS

Right there with using Mike Stanton as a LOOGY. Who cares about actual performance, platoon splits are universal, right?

I don't care that he's playing, Votto had big big splits in the minors. But really:

EE vL: 369 PA, .258/.357/.427, .784 OPS
Ross vL: 349 PA, .235/.305/.497, .802 OPS

and for fun.....
Hopper vL: 130 PA, .398/.429/.508, .937 OPS

I've seen that. I bothers me that "someone" is thinking about Cantu as the RH portion of a 1B platoon in 2008.

Welch and T. Brennaman were saying that Mackanin said that Hamilton was playing tonight because it's time for the Reds to find out if Josh is an 'everyday player'----meaning could he hit lefties.

That answers (partially) a question about whether or not the Reds were going to see if Josh is a full-time player. It also brings up the question: what took ya' so long? And, as Josh strikes out, are you willing to play him everyday until Oct. to find out or is this a short-term audition?

Cantu with another good atbat. Fell behind 1-2 and worked it back to 3-2 before drawing his second walk of the night. He's been on base now four times tonight in four PA's (single, walk, HBP, walk). He now has six walks to only one strikeout in 23 atbats with the Reds. That's more walks than he had with the DRays in 58 atbats.

While I've praised Weathers more than a lot of folks on this site, I can't help but think the guy's got to be nearing the end of his rope. I want him to succeed, but I can't ignore Father Time.

I loved listening to Joe tonight. I rarely get the chance to hear the Reds on radio, but I was able to hear them tonight. I thought Joe sounded very good--as good as I've heard him in a long time. Maybe a limited schedule keeps him sharp and on top of his game. Jeff also did a decent job, considering he was "out of position".

But as someone noted, if you remove the horrible St. Louis outing, his ERA is a respectable 3.46. Now, the truth is that game happened, so we have to deal with it, but out of fairness, we can't let one bad outing cloud the fact that he's been a decent reliever since returning in August.

In my opinion, Majewski has looked mediocre. His stuff seems to be coming back (velocity is back up from time to time and his slider has some good bite sometimes), but it's inconsistent. His command hasn't been very good and his pitches are still up more than they should be. I think there's a chance he can get back to the solid, workhorse guy he was in 2005, but he's still got a ways to go, and I don't think we'll know how much progress he can make, anyway, till next year.

Still, I'd like to see him -- and Salmon -- get a fair amount of work down the stretch over guys like Saarloos and Coffey, for evaluation purposes.

Why stop there? I you remove all of his bad outings, then his ERA is 0.00. Wait a second! I just realized that Gary Majewski's the greatest pitcher ever.

What you can't do, or at least what no sane person should do, is ignore those times when Gary Majewski gets victimized for throwing sub-mediocre garbage over the plate. He sucks, about as hard as a relief pitcher can suck. He begs for trouble in every at-bat. That sometimes it doesn't find him should not be misinterpreted for competence. He'll get cranked again soon enough.
