He's getting almost all the starts vs. RH pitchers since he's come up.

Isn't it weird that Jerry Narron, a former catcher, always batted a his catcher 8th and now Mac, a former middle infielder, bats shortstops 2nd.

I really have no point here. Sorry.

That's a testament to Mackanin, not Wayne, however. Since Wayne was brutally hesitant to even bring him up. I'm glad Joey kicked the door down, was unwilling to be denied despite the FO's best efforts.

I think Mack said when Votto was brought up that he would receive the bulk of the playing time. So far he has and that's a good thing. We are seeing that he can do it on this level and that gives the Reds some good options for the off season.
LaRussa is playing genious again with the Cards lineup. Pitcher batting eighth and 2b batting 9th.

Wonder what the Cards TV team will be whining about in today's game since they already covered the following last night:

1. Brandon Phillips baseless complaints on Pujols
2. Why the word Great is used in GAB b/c there's nothing great about it - in fact it looks unfinished
3. How the Reds bullpen always implodes in the 8th and the same will happen today
4. Brandon Phillips is a hot dog the way he runs the bases after a HR
5. Jim Edmonds will be agreeable to a move to RF next season just like Junior was this year
6. Unlike the Reds, the great Cardinals fans show in good times and bad

and on and on and on with the usual Cardinals arrogance. I know some of what was said is true - I just don't need to hear it piped out all night long on a broadcast of a baseball game. Just call the game like you're supposed to.

I'll say it again - it's never a bad day when the Reds beat the Cards.

What happened? MLB took my internet feed away from athensi.com.

La Russa calls for the walk of EE (a righty) to face Votto (a lefty) with Wells (a righty) on the mound.

Votto drives in 2 with a double, and now Ross drives in 2 more with a Homer.

DoogMinAmo
09-13-2007, 02:10 PM
Considering EdE's start to the season, it must be some sort of redemption for him to be IBB, especially against a righty.

I know Votto is a rook, but I don't get that strategic move at all... and he makes em pay.

Then Ross in on the action! 5-1 Reds. Anyone have a broom by their desk at work?

All joking aside though, he is a good option for a fourth OF.

I like him as a forth OFer and someone who can come off the bench. His ability to bunt for hits and move around the bases is key. Wouldn't be surprised if Freel is shopped this off season.

Then who is the 5th OF? Ideally it would be a righty power guy. can Cantu play out there?

As it stands right now, the Reds' bench next year would be:

Hattie (L)
Hopper (R)
Freel (R)
Cantu (R)
Keppinger (R)
Valentin (L/R)

Pretty good speed and contact, a little power. Pretty good, actually. Give the Reds a couple bullpen arms and a starter, and the Reds progress yet again in 2008, with a serious run made in 2009 and beyond.

Jay Bruce absolutely does NOT come up to the big leagues to ride pine. If he has a solid spring, which he will, and tears up AAA for the first half, which he will, then either Dunn or Griffey will get traded after June 15th for Bruce to play full time, if they aren't already gone this offseason.

My take of late is it depends on how receptive Dunn is to a LTC. If he wants one and signs it, Griffey is gone. If Dunn passes, he is gone and, GASP, the Reds pick up Griffey's option for 2009, his last year here. You heard it here first.

Let it be known that the Reds are now 38-37 at home this year, a winning record.

For all the talk about changing GAB and getting pitchers to better suit the ballpark, the Reds need to improve their road numbers more.

That much being said, the Cards and Brewers have been worse road teams than the Reds this year, but have been ridiculously better at home.

A bunch of fans, the newspaper guys and the radio tv guys.

...and he goes down like a methmouth should. It's official--the Cards suck like the Reds. It's a big pile of suck in the Central.

That's what makes last year and this year frustrating. In a division full of suck, the Reds are still a 3rd or 4th place team.

Some sort of home field advanage for sure. It may be a combination of things:

Home crowd, home cooking, umpires, time zone change...

They are only a couple of arms away?

As much of a putz as I may sound for saying this, in this division, the Reds ARE only a couple of arms away. As long as they do not mortgage the future to get them, I would be much more excited about the Reds next year and beyond if they got a couple more solid arms, one bully one starter. I would love more, but would be happy with that as a start.

What's sad is that IF they are the right arms, they may only be two or three away from serious contention in this division.

Now let me see a show of hands of those who believe Wayne's got the guts or wherewithal to acquire those arms.

Win the next six in a row against the Cubs and Brewers and you never know. ;)

I agree, 2 or 3 very good arms would likely put this team in contention. Can Wayne identify those arms and go get them? I won't be holding my breath.

Not to dampen the enthusiasm but Kirk Saarloos is starting Saturday's game.

He has been pretty good at identifying young, undervalued talent to date. What that holds for the future is anyone's guess, but I am not nearly as pessimistic about him as others here are.

Young, undervalued offensive talent, right.

His ability to identify young, undervalued position players has been very good. His pitching acquisitions (outside of Burton) haven't been so good.

Not to mention the three starters will be Shearn, Saarloos, and Beslile.

Have mercy.

It is stil early with this category, so it is hard to completely judge, but here is some of the major-league ready talent he acquired with some upside:

Matt Maloney - solid in upper minors
Bill Bray - flashes of brilliance
Gary Majewski - jury still out, has underperformed mostly
Jared Burton - no complaints ;)
Bronson Arroyo - great pickup, we need a couple more of him
John Coutlangus - no risk converted outfielder has been a pleasant surprise
Marcus McBeth - fastball/ change combo has many wondering what his ceiling can be

Not all bad, not nearly that good for just his plusses, but not dire by any means.

One of my biggest gripes about Mackanin is this habit of throwing his closer in the 9th inning of blowouts. He should not have pitched in the first two games of this series, especially now with all the pitchers on the roster.

The best part about those acquisitions, is that they were all obtained for guys who would have little room on our team.

I wouldnt say all, I would love to still have Denorfia as an option over Hopper. But for the most part, yes he has gotten something for nothing.

Well, we are beating teams in a playoff race. However, those teams are just mediocre, so at best we are mediocre.

I think those particular dreams have been dashed sometime earlier than this weekend. For me, I'm dreaming of dashing some other team's hopes - particularly the Brewers....

People gave up hope of "being in contention" long ago. Those few hangers on were convinced when we were only 5 games out a few weeks ago and then got killed by the Nats, Pirates, Mets and Cards (IIRC...I remember joking that at least it wasn't a West Coast trip that did us in this year).

Seems like the remaining games are good practice for those who have forgotten how to simply enjoy a baseball game without the pressure of worrying about a pennant race, line up construction or what bone-head move the manager/GM will make. GABP will have plenty of open seats. Give it a try folks.

I said to my father this morning that if we can screw up the Cards and the Cubs and somehow squeek into 3rd place I'd consider it a huge turnaround considering where we were earlier in the year.

Mind you, it's been a horrable year performance wise, but at least we'd salvage something.

We didn't play the Nats at that time. We won 2 of 4 from the Pirates. It was the Cards (0-3) and the Mets (1-2)that did us in (a 3-7 stretch)
