Here's the reaosn why I picked up Bailey for my fantasy team. If there is one single match-up where he can compete, well, this is it. A group of hackers that can't hit, inside a great pitchers park. A nice welcome back to the majors line-up for Homer.

They told a nice story about Franson. His brother's favorite player was Dave Righetti (#19), the brother was born on the 19th and he battled cancer for 19 years before he passed away. Rags was apparently a friend of the family (which is from a suburb of San Jose) and he gave Franson the number 19 when Kevin came up to the bigs.

Let the conspiracy theories start!!!

It is clear Homer has better "pop" and "bite" on his pitches than the first time we saw him. Maybe like Flyer said, he had been having leg problems. Though he must have been having them for awhile because he looked that way in AAA before his callup.

I would take Matt Cain over Bailey as a pitcher however. Cain has better explosion threw the zone than Homer. Bailey gets his outs more Harangian with his long delivery that he hides well which causes hitters to misjudge his pitches leading to frustrating popouts. Always go with the guy with the more explosive arm.

Rick Sweet on Bruce:

Sweet had some of his warmest praise for one player not with the team. Outfielder and former top pick Jay Bruce played at three levels and finished at Louisville before winning Baseball America's Minor League Player of the Year Award. He batted .319 with 26 homers and 89 RBIs overall.

"Jay Bruce is special," Sweet said. "I had Griffey the first year he played, and Jay Bruce is in that category in my opinion. I had Griffey when he was 18, and Jay just turned 20, but he's got the potential at the time. They're close to the same animal.

Bruce spent just 16 games at Double-A Chattanooga before his promotion to Louisville. It was supposed to be a temporary stay when injuries left the Bats shorthanded.

"I practically begged Wayne to have him come up in Triple-A," Sweet said. "I had two infielders in the outfield. I said, 'Let him come up for a week, because Dewayne Wise will be back in a week.' So they told him, 'You're going for one week.' [Paul] Janish was the other one. I had e-mails [from the Reds] that said in big letters 'ONE WEEK ONLY,' and they told the kids that. Jay started playing good, and Wise never got healthy."

I kept asking myself that as a kid. In 61, they did win the NL, but they had to play the Yankees who were unbeatable. In 1962, they won almost 100 games. Purkey won 23 that year. In fact, Jay won 20 twice and O'Toole won no more than 19. Maloney was coming up in 1961 and Maloney came into his own in 1962.

Injuries were part of it. Purkey got hurt in 1963 and never was the same. They were on inconsistent teams back then, but they came close to winning or won in 1961, 1962, and 1964 and then a dark era began, but not as bad as what we're going through now. The four of them we only together for five years and then one-by-one they either were disabled or out of basebal. Moral to the story is get it while you got it going.

Maloney was my favorite player in the 60's, and the reason I am a Reds fan.

Puffy, me too. In fact, Maloney and Purkey were my favorites with Jay coming in third. Heck, Jay lived just down the road from me for years. I met all of them and I used to see Jay in a Charleston (WV) mens store at least four times a year. It just happened to be the place my Dad bought his clothes, so after seeing Jay and talking to him the first time, I'd always make him take me just in case Joey was there.

And you are correct. Jay won 21 twice, and stunk up the last two years of that four year stretch. O'Toole won 19 in 1961, 16 in 1962 and 17 in both 63 and 64. Purkey won 16 in 61 and 23 in 62 and then the injury drove him out of baseball. Maloney won 23 in 1963 and 15 the next year. He won 20 in 1964, but after that the
Reds became a poor team and Maloney had less opportunity for wins. I always said if they could all be at their best for one year, no one could touch the Reds.

If Homer could face this lineup in this ballpark all the time, he'd never lose.

It's a good way to get his feet back under him in the bigs.

He's got 2 more starts, I would think....Tuesday vs Astros and on the last day vs The Cubbies!!

That could change, I guess

He looked mad at himself as he left. Pitched a hell of a game though.

Giants announcers pegged it. Pete wasn't going to let him lose this game; he is pulled with tying run on base.

The job done by Homer was fantastic. I also would like to add Javys pitch calling has had me quite impressed. I have never been in Javys corner and do not feel he is a quality catcher. But there is no denying that his management of Shearn and from earlier mentioned comments on FSN Javy has done great behind the plate with Homer Pitching.

I read today that Javy is having back problems and asked to be removed from the game the other night. I was surprised to see his name in the lineup tonight.

VALENTIN SORE - Reds catcher Javier Valentin was sore after catching nine innings in Tuesday's victory over the Cubs.

Valentin, who said he's been bothered by a bad back for a couple of weeks now, didn't play in Wednesday's game, although he was on deck to pinch hit when the final out was made.

Valentin was taken out of Sunday's game with the Brewers because of the back. He said he started feeling pain in his legs and that's when he told Mackanin he couldn't go any longer.

"It's tough when you don't play and then one day everything changes and you start playing every day and your body's not used to it," Valentin said. "Then you get sore and tight. Then you feel good."

Valentin had been limited to a pinch-hitting specialist at the end of Jerry Narron's regime, but started more at catcher under Mackanin.

"It's nothing to be concerned of. It's one more thing I need to take care of during the offseason," Valentin said. "Maybe I'll do something different with my body, maybe lose weight, work more with my body."

I'd certainly say that his impatience isn't helping. If Phillips ever could increase his walk total, then one side effect we'd likely see is fewer double plays.

Here's an interesting stat: In the last two seasons, Brandon Phillips has grounded into 31 more double plays than Edwin Encarnacion. Phillips has 45 of them while Encarnacion only has 14 of them.

a stat that goes along with Phillips hitting into a ton of dp's --is that Eddy E. has only grounded into 4 dp's for the year.....my guess is that dp difference makes their hitting value essentially the same though at first glance most would thinkPhillips is having a better year by far.

I agree. I was at the game today, and I asked Brandon for his autograph (I made a super cute sign for him- I'm such a geek!). He seemed really subdued and told me he wasn't signing today. :(

But other than that, the game was great! My ex got us field club seats, so I was totally spoiled. Got quite a few autographs at batting practice, and even got Harang to sign my jacket, so I feel accomplished. Nothing like seeing the Reds win!! :D

The fans in SF drive me nuts, though. Some guy kept yelling "Griffey!" at Hopper, and more than once, I heard people yelling, "Double play!" when there were already two outs. I also had a guy come up and ask me why Austin Kearns wasn't playing.
