Reds lineup per Trent, answering the question of who plays if the entire starting outfield doesn't:

Hopper cf
Keppinger ss
Phillips 2b
Encarnacion 3b
Cantu 1b
Votto lf
Ellison rf
Ross c
Belisle p

No lineup posted for the Giants yet but Tim Lincecum will be on the hill.

Also, I wouldn't be surprised to see this lineup next spring training during a split squad game.

You're right. I copied it off a projected-pitchers list and didn't remember about Lincecum's status. MLB.com shows Patrick Misch as the starter for SF.

Watched him in the OF in a Cubs game and he seems to be lanky and his judgment on playing balls leaves something to be desired. I think it was the only game he played in the field with Chicago.

I'm probably being unfair and using hyperbole here, but that was a first class foul up.

For a team who had a glut of outfielders, we've come to this?

If chosen in the Rule 5 draft, a player must be kept on the selecting team's 25-man major league roster for the entire season after the draft--he may not be optioned or designated to the minors. The selecting team may, at any time, waive the Rule 5 draftee. If a Rule 5 draftee clears waivers by not signing with a new MLB team, he must be offered back to the original team, effectively canceling the Rule 5 draft choice. Once a Rule 5 draftee spends an entire season on his new team's 25-man roster, his status reverts to normal and he may be optioned or designated for assignment.

Players signed at age 19 or older are exempt from the Rule 5 draft for four years after being drafted (in the amateur draft) or signed by their current organization; players drafted or signed at age 18 or younger are exempt for five years. For example, players drafted in 2004 (or later) at age 19 (or older) will be exempt from the 2007 Rule 5 draft, as will players drafted in 2003 (or later) at age 18 (or younger).

The exemption periods were extended by one year in October 2006 as part of a new Collective Bargaining Agreement. The change took effect immediately, exempting many players from the 2006 Rule 5 draft even though they had been signed in some cases more than four years before the new agreement came into effect. And they are not on the 40 man roster. That's one of the reasons Jay Bruce wasn't called up. He doesn't need to be on the 40 man roster yet since he hasn't had enough time to be eligible for the Rule 5 draft. But if you call him up he has to go on the 40 man roster and someone else won't be protected. You can take him off the 40 man roster but he has to be designated for assignment then and someone would snatch him up off waivers.

I really liked that AB by EdE. He's in the cleanup slot, 2 out, tying run on second, clutch situation and EdE doesn't try to slam one out, he just squarely meets the ball and takes it up the middle.

That's the type of thing that, next year, if he's gonna' fill a spot in the middle of the lineup, EdE needs to do. :beerme:

Then everybody who stays in the majors is a rule 5 draftee... right? Yet, some they specify that's what they are (Hamilton, Burton) and others they don't (Dunn, for example).

Only a certain number of players spend more than four or five years in the minors without being on the 40-man roster. Young stars like Griffey and Dunn certainly didn't. Even up-and-comers like Brandon Phillips didn't. Homer Bailey didn't. The Rule 5 draftee is the guy who's in danger of being buried in some team's farm system, and this gives hims a chance to get out and get an opportunity with someone else.

No. Guys like Dunn were put on the 40 man roster so they were not eligible to be drafted. It's unusual to have 2 Rule 5 draftees on the roster all season. Because you can't send them down and they are deemed not ready to play in the majors yet, they usually don't get much playing time or they get offered back to their original team.

In the minors.... aha! That's what I was missing. I thought it was in the majors, and that's why it wasn't making sense to me.

Votto missed a double by a foot or so. 1-2 count. He's 2-for-4 tonight. He fouls another off. Ball two away. He fouls another off to the left. 2-2 still. Ball three up and away. Third time tonight he's had a three ball count. He then K's swinging on ball four shoulder height.

I like their paceing. They've been funny at times and you have to remember that they are announcing for a team that's actually worse than the Reds. ;)

Any idea who the other guy is? Sounds like he was a pitcher.

I definitely agree here. I am probably one of Phillips' bigger critics because his plate approach drives me crazy, but you can't argue witht the excitement he brings to the game. He's one of the few guys that really seems to be putting his all into every game. You have to admire that.

Great game -- how many times has Phillips electrified in big moments late in the game? For as much as people rag on him for not having a certain hitting approach, it should be recognized that this kid has very, very good baseball instincts. He hasn't peaked yet.

For my money, late in the season when the team's out of the race, I like seeing the Coatses and Ellisons on the field....

Hack, hack, hack. But he's successful with it. It's also the reason he goes through dry spells, too. I guess he is what he is and that's OK by me.

Well it's the thing that seperates him from being great. IMO, he's good and not great. Nothing wrong with that at all. He's been a very nice guy to have around.

I'm just not sure how much I'm going to appreciate his game when he's making the big bucks in a few years.

Perhaps Phillips would not be effective if he were more "disciplined" at the plate. There seems to be this little OBP prototype that every offensive player is supposed to fit and if he doesn't, then he garners a lot of criticism.

Look I'm not neccessarily saying that he needs to change his approach. I don't have the slightest clue if that would actually help him. I assume Phillips is using the approach that makes him the best player he can be.

I'm basing my opinions on his total abilities. If he had a SLG of .600 I would forget about the OBP because his other abilities more than make up for it. Phillips is often made out to be a premiere player, but IMO, because of his OBP problems, he is not. His other abilties simply don't make up for it.

I think Phillips is an above average 2nd basemen (I'd rank him as having around the 10th best season), but lately I'm hearing tons of people saying he's the 2nd best in baseball. I think his total game is overrated, and is probably going to be overpaid by quite a bit eventually.

I truly like Phillips and enjoy watching him play, but I think it's getting to the point where the expectations are too high for him. He's a terrific asset to have especially considering how barren the middle infield has been other than him, but his lack of OBP simply can't be ignored IMO. He is who he is, and that's a very fine 2nd basemen. Just not elite level that he's made out to be.
