Just curious. Has Cantu ever played the OF? I'm willing to see anyone out there in lieu of Coats and Ellison. IF we had another option at SS, we could put Keppinger there.

Now watch and see both Jason and Buck go 8-8 to spite me.

I never ***** about this team....I just think Ellison sucks and why not at least bring Bruce up to let him experience the major leagues..

The main reason they didn't bring Bruce up b/c he wasn't already on the 40 man and because once he is they'd have to pass him through waivers if they wanted to take him off.

This gives them the maximum roster flexibility in the off season. Bruce will only be added to the 40 man if he makes the team out of spring training.

Coats and Ellison were brought in BECAUSE they are expendable and because the Reds will have 2 extra slots on the 40 man roster when they are DFA'd after the season.

A breakout 2007 by Reds prospect Jay Bruce is not quite over.

The outfielder, who began the season at Single-A Sarasota and ended it with Triple-A Louisville, will participate in the upcoming International Baseball Federation World Cup in Taiwan as a member of Team USA. The event begins in early November.

"He's got a full plate this fall," Reds general manager Wayne Krivsky said. "He's going to instructional league for a week to get ready to go out to Arizona to be part of the USA team. So he's got a busy fall and early winter."

I'm not sure what would make less sense.

Putting Bruce on the 40 Man before we have to and risk loosing someone in the Rule 5 draft (where teams will be out to get us after our last year's success) so he can get a few meaningless AB's.

Or doing that so he can simply sit on the bench.

Good luck getting that point through. They want their Bruce and they want it now.

Of course if the Reds did happen to lose someone in the rule 5 draft that would be held against Krivsky too.

Shearn wasn't all that terrible. Burke's hit jumped over EdE's glove, Everett's was a swinging bunt...and then the roof caved in.

Still 38 pitches and he wasn't done with the inning.

I don't know whose exemptions are expiring.

But it also gives the reds the roster room to add guys through trades or ML free agency as Coats and Ellison are just placeholders who'll be jettisoned when the year is up.

I don't know whose exemptions are expiring.

Pelland and maybe Guevara are about it. I know that I would hate to lose Pelland because we wanted Bruce to play 10 meaningless games.

Sure it would have been nice to watch Bruce as it would have certainly made these games more entertaining, but these things could have negative effects, and they need to be considered. I wouldn't be whining about Bruce not being here if you don't even know the consequences of said move.

But it also gives the reds the roster room to add guys through trades or ML free agency as Coats and Ellison are just placeholders who'll be jettisoned when the year is up.

Exactly. Perhaps there is another Jared Burton to be found in the rule V draft. It would be nice to have an open 40 man spot for those types of circumstances. Perhaps in the long run the extra available spot won't matter, but as of now, we don't know, and that spot shouldn't be a complete after thought. It could very well become valuable at some point in the near future.

I think it's kind of depressing when a guy does what appears to be a pretty good job and people don't even want to give him consideration because he's an "interim" guy and they think they need some "name" guy like Joe Girardi because he's got a football mentality. I would have no problem if they made him manager (one year contract, only) - as long as they perform an extensive interviewing process before hand.
And, no, a big name is not the answer. Dusty Baker is technically a big name.

I'm too rotund to be edgy. :p:

Matt, I know that you work for WLW but, objectively, you have to admit that these two guys are not terrific (or even good) announcers.

Rem

I enjoyed them before I worked here, I enjoy them now, and I'll probably enjoy them if I ever leave.

I've heard more Marty than Thom, obviously, but have no problem with what I've heard from Thom so far.

I don't mind hearing their opinions, because I like the emotion that it shows, passion...it makes it feel more real to me, than a guy just announcing a ball game.

I like the conversational feel they have...and everything that goes with it. If I just want information, story lines, and what happened, I'll read the story or the box score in the morning paper.

I don't have to agree with everything they say...in fact, that's not always as fun. I like when it stimulates thought and debate.

Names of other managers that could possibly interview..
Baker: Didnt win for the Cubs (dont want him here)
LaRussa: Winning manager (to me, his job if he wants it)
Giardi: I think he goes to St.Louis if LaRussa leaves there
Brenly: he is from Ohio, and a World Series ring, but havent heard great props for him here
Frank Robinson: thats a name that has Reds roots!! Dont know if he would be the one to get the Reds winning or not
Buddy Bell: He never won anywhere he managed.. I dont see him here
Davey Johnson: I dont see him here as he is leather pants adviser!
Jim Tracey: he is a hometown guy, but is he better than Pete Mackanin??

Wow, talk about a big hit; Hamilton, Dunner, Jr and Hatte all out. To a lesser degree, a hit from not having Gonzo and Freel.

I guess it sorta snuck up on me but all of a sudden a bunch of guys are down for the count.

I agree they shouldn't talk about anything other than what happens during the game.

I mean, because of the Chicken Dance discussion, I missed out on hearing every excruating detail of the Reds going 10 consecutive outs without a baserunner.

And someone emailed them about the chicken dance and it went from there.

I don't care how long the contract is as long as they cut bait if it ain't working. Managers don't make a lot of scratch.

Fear not, friends, and I'm serious here. Pete will be the manager soon after the season. It's jsut a hunch, but an educated hunch. They like him (Krivsky and Bob). At least it ain't Narron or Boone (or Miley), right??? Right???

The two main reasons Brenly has a WS ring are Randy Johnson and Curt Schilling.
