What his contract status? I had heard he had halted contract negociations. What are the chances of him wanting to get closer to home. He played college ball at Kentucky and was born in Kentucky. Save our money for next year. Stand pat with what we got for this year. Sign a Lieber type, develop Cueto and Bailey. With our revamped bullpen a better year from Coffey and some our youg guys let's say we win 85 this yaer and contend for a wild card. Don't mortgage our future now. Griffey will be done after this year. Keep Bruce and Hamilton. Sign Webb next year and then maybe trade and go after his college teamate Joe Blanton. You keep the nucleous of the young guys and have a rotation of Harang, Webb, Arroyo, Blanton, Bailey or Cueto. Outfield of Hamilton, Bruce, & Dunn. You still got AGon, Phillips, EE, and Votto. Webb is a sinker ball pitcher, perfect fit for GABP.

I have heard after Peavy signs his extension, Webb will use those negotiatiions as a benchmark to sign an extension with the Diamondbacks. I would be surprised if he left Arizona.

Love to have Webb & Blanton... really difficult to imagine that we could though - Kentucky boys would be great ;)

WEBB
08:$5.5M, 09:$6.5M, 10:$8.5M club option ($0.5M buyout, which increases by $0.5M each time Webb finishes in the top 5 of Cy Young balloting, 2006-09)

"I think we should sign Webb next year"

Brandon's agent is negotiating with Arizona for a new contract. Brandon's current contract doesn't end until after the 2010 season. Arizona offered a contract at around 10 million per year, but obviously that one was not going to get it done. It will take a contract around at least 15-16 million per year for around 4-5 years to get it done.

Derek Lowe, a poor man's Brandon Webb, is a free agent, however...

I have said this in another thread, I believe it was the Bedard one, but if we could possibly get someone that could be another #1 of our staff it would not only improve our staff depth wise, I also believe it would improve it overall as well, because it would push Aaron Harang even moreso and I believe we could see even better numbers from him as he would have someone at his level pitching with him and him and either a Bedard and/or Webb would battle among themselves....does that make sense??? Its hard to actually convert that to what I was thinking in my head down to the computer...

I think if we got Bedard it will make the whole team better - not just Harang - the players and fans will have an extra bounce in their step knowing that this year we're not "playing for .500" we're playing for a world series. I think we'll see the best season out of Junior since he became a Red (provided he stays healthy).

I think Harang will get better, but particularly Arroyo - remember in 07 they made him the poster child of the Reds and he was expected to pitch like a 1a.... expecting him to pitch like a #3 will be a lot more realistic and less pressure.

I just remember the atmosphere the offseason when the Reds picked up Milton and Ramon ... the player's excitement level really got amped... imagine what it will be when the additions are 2 legitimate guys like Bedard & Cordero.

Not to mention, its a real good possibility that if Hamilton goes, the Reds will bring in a defensive specialist (Cameron?) in CF ..... w/ a strong defense of Gonzalez,Phillips, and Cameron up the middle... that's got to make a pitching staff better too.
