Here is the Reds Hot Stove League show report for 1-16-08. Thom and the great and powerful Marty were the hosts tonight. They talked a bit about the upcoming Reds Caravan and Sarasota possibly getting back in the picture as far as spring training sites.

After commercial the first caller asked if the Reds could trade Dunn now or if they had to wait till after June 1. Marty said that he could veto any trade up through June 1. (Marty was just so awesome in answering that question. First he said he couldn't be traded and then he correctly said that he could be traded but Dunn could veto any trade. That is the mark of a Hall of Famer when he can correct his own statement like that. And it was smooth too.) Thom feels that with Dunn's lunch with Bob and Dusty expressing his desire to keep Dunn here that if the numbers can be worked out, the Reds are going to try to re-sign Dunn to a multi-year deal. Marty agreed and said he played well the second half of the season and he may play even better next year. (I don't know why everyone comes down on Marty for being negative. He was really optimistic about Dunn there. But that's just another example of how great Marty is.)

The next caller said that he felt there was a lot more charging of the mound when a batter got hit back about 20 years ago than there is now. He said he's always amazed that a batter can take a pitch in the ribs and act like nothing happened. Marty said that he thinks that's a macho thing and that sort of thing has been going on for years and years. Marty reminisced about when Rob Dibble hit the Mets Tim Teufel in the back and Teufel could hardly breathe and it caused a big fight. (Wow! What a memory) Thom mentioned a time where Randy Johnson hit Mark Grace in the kidney with a fastball and Grace was so sore he didn't get out of bed for the next couple of days until it was time to go to the ballpark.

Thom and Marty talked about the congressional hearings yesterday and Marty said that Selig and Fehr were treated much better than he thought they would be. He said that the big story was Miguel Tejada who may have given false testimony and he could be investigated by Congress. (Marty is so urbane. He watches C-Span and everything). Thom said that the big show will be next month when Clemens testifies and he gives Clemens credit for testifying unlike Bonds. But he said that Senator Mitchell testified that he thought MacNamee was extremely credible.

Marty said that Jon Lieber signed a 1 year $3.5M deal with the Cubs and Nate Robertson signed a 3 year $21.2M deal with the Tigers avoiding arbitration.

After commercial the next caller said he was heading down to Sarasota for ST and wanted to know what were the best games to attend. Marty mentioned a couple of split squad games against the Phils and Yankees on one day. (That was so awesome that Marty had that info at his fingertips.) Thom and Marty discussed Sarasota getting back into the mix for keeping the Reds there but Marty has heard that the county is the biggest obstacle for keeping the Reds there. Marty said the Reds bring a huge amount of money to Sarasota and they just don't care. He said the Reds have done everything in their power to stay there. Thom said a lot of people think Arizona is a little far away but cities in AZ are being aggressive in pursuing teams while hardly any cities in Florida aren't.

After commercial asked if the Reds were looking at
Livan Hernandez now that the Cubs signed Lieber. He also felt that the Reds offense has the potential to become like the BRM. Marty said that they should be good offensively and a key is EE to have a good full season because he is a RH hitter. (Marty is so smart) He also said that he wouldn't compare them to the BRM since they were one of the great teams of all time. Thom pimped Livan Hernandez and said he is one of the savviest pitchers out there and he'll pitch 230 innings and is worth a look. (This from the same guy who wanted the Reds to sign Steve Finley last year).

The next caller asked where the caravan stop in Dayton was at. Neither of them knew.

The next caller said he enjoyed Jeff Brantley's insights on pitching last year and wondered if he'd be better as a pitching coach. Marty said he makes more money doing TV and radio than he would in uniform (Marty's even an economic genius. I think Raisor should give one of his Nobel Prizes to Marty).

The next caller thought that after each Reds victory the Reds should do an Old Lefthander salute. (Let's not get carried away, people.) Marty said that Jr. suggested that the Reds wear black jerseys with Joe's number on it for Opening Day and then auction the jerseys off with the proceeds going to Joe's foundation. Marty said that there is precedent for it since the Dodgers did it last year for Jackie Robinson.

After commercial the next caller asked about Walt Jocketty signing with the Reds. He wonders if Wayne is feeling some heat with this signing. Marty said that he'd hate to be in Wayne's position especially since he's in the last year of his deal and Walt has had a lot of success in StL. Thom agreed that the better the Reds play the better Wayne's chances of surviving are but that is the way it goes for any GM. Marty thinks that unless the Reds catch lightening in a bottle and get a front line starter, the starting staff is not going to be much of an improvement over last year. He said Matt Belisle has to have a better season. Thom said that from what they hear, Wayne is working around the clock to improve the team.

The next caller asked when the Ford Frick Award winner will be announced. Marty said that he should be getting his ballot within the next few days and the winner will be announced on Feb. 19. The caller asked if Joe has a good chance. Marty said if he ever did, this year is it. He also said that he can't campaign for Joe either or else they may take his voting privileges away (They wouldn't dare. But that's Marty for you. Mr. Objective even when they are talking about Joe.) Thom doesn't know why they wait so long to do that. Marty said he doesn't either. Marty and Thom congratulated Goose Gossage for being elected and they both think Andre Dawson should be in.

After commercial the next caller asked what happened to Cantu. Marty said he was released by the Reds and he signed with the Marlins and will have a chance to be their Opening Day 3rd baseman. The caller asked about Livingston. Thom said he probably would be ready by June.

The next caller asked if Vero Beach was an option for the Reds. Marty said he heard Baltimore is probably going to wind up there. (That Marty. Always in the know about things like that) The caller then asked if instead of trading Bruce to BAL for Bedard, why not offer Stubbs. Marty said that they don't have any first hand info on which names are in the mix but he wouldn't trade Bruce especially with Dunn and Jr. possibly leaving after this season.

The next caller likes the direction the Reds are going but agrees that they need pitching. He said the Reds should not mortgage their future though. Marty and Thom agreed. Marty said he wouldn't trade Bruce, Maloney, Cueto, Bailey or Votto for a couple of years of Bedard even if it meant the post-season in 2008. The caller asked why Bruce wasn't called up last year. Marty said because they didn't want to start his arbitration clock. He said he talked to Sabo and Sabo said Bruce was ready for the Reds on August 1 and will be the best prospect we'll see come out of the organization.

The next caller talked about how he enjoyed the Reds Rewind show last week and is looking forward to next Monday.

This endeth the Reds Hot Stove League show report for 1-16-08. So let it be written. So let it be done.

If only Wayne had listened to this guy, Bedard would be ours.

I don't like Major League Baseball Hot Stove League Programing being preempted for mid major basketball. 1530 doesn't reach me at night. Put the midmajor team on 1530, not the major league team.

There must be a contractual reason why we can't or we would, I would think. X gets moved if UC is playing....both would get moved for a Reds Radio Network broadcast...HSL isn't one of those.

We used to just air the HSL for 30 mins on nights like this, but we now air it for the whole hour....we just have to move it.

Oh I appreciate it Matt, I just wish Xavier was the one that moved at 6:30, I can't think that many people care about X outside of a 40 mile radius of Cincinnati. Reds fans do listen from much farther away.

Junior is a piece of work! That will be one to see and a great idea. We miss you Nuxy!

Nice work Chip. Glad to see you giving Marty his due respect for once instead of being so snarky towards the HOFer.
