Do you have a reason? Or are you just posting to post?

Not much to regret at 700K. People like to bash Casey around here cause of the double plays he had but, for that price he wouldn't be a bad bat comming off the bench.

Why would they regret it? Even if Casey is a backup, he's a good guy to have in the clubhouse. I think its a good move.

Maybe regret is a bit strong.

This is a message board. Are we not allowed to post? I didnt know I had to check in with you to state my opinion on something.

Agreed. Even if he is God aweful you can easily cut him and just eat the 700K.

I love it! I like seeing Sean have a job as long as its not with the Reds.

Meanwhile we have Scott Hatteberg making $1.85M to do the same thing.

Yeah, they'll regret it allright.

Also, reports that Morgan Ensberg signed with the Yankees.

This is how Big Boy Baseball is played.

We have Juan Castro on our bench.

Good for Sean to find a job with a contending club. I'd love to see him finally get a ring! :)

I wonder if Bleeds purposely only cherry picks the post he reads or if its just an accident.

Glad to hear Casey signed with a team that are already contenders. I think he'll be a nice bat off the bench for the Sox. He is a good contact hitter and doesn't strikeout much. It's clear he's not starter material anymore, but I think with his skills he could extend his career for a few more years in this type of role.

I hate the idea of rooting for the Red Sox, but I'd love to see Sean get a ring.

I wonder if he had other offers but chose one from a contender? I know he's slow and has little pop, but given the contracts out there it seems like he could have gotten more money.

He pretty much performed to his historical norms in 2007 and went from $4M to $700k.

Good for Sean. Great guy to a great baseball town.

I thought, just because of his veteran status, he would make more than that. The Red Sox got a steal. His clubhouse presence is worth more than that by itself.

Sean Casey 2007 .296/.353/.393
Scott Hatteberg 2007 .310/.394/.474

The Yankees have Miguel Cairo on their bench and the Red Sox have Julio Lugo.

Big Boy Baseball is more than just throwing money at free agents like Ensberg whose stats have declined over the last two seasons like so many others in MLB.

I think this is a good move for the Red Sox. They get a veteran who will hit in the clutch off the bench and a guy who can spell for Lowell (they'll move Youkilis to 3rd) once or twice a week. Good signing at 700K and I'm pretty sure the contract isn't guaranteed, so he'll have to make the team out of Spring training.

Scott Hatteberg 2007 .310/.394/.474

That was a Career Year for Scott as a full-time player for most of the year.

Get back to me at years-end/when he gets traded and post his stat-line. I bet it's closer to his career norms, which are much much lower...

Now let's trade Hatteberg for Casey and a prospect and use the salary difference to help pay Phillips. They'll both be backups anyway and there might be some benefit having Casey back in the clubhouse.

But we were going to have to pay Casey $8-9 million if we had kept him? Hatteburg was still a great choice, IMO.

Their "clubhouse presence", or CP, just shot through the roof. Casey is a terrific upgrade as the Red Sox CP was extremely low last season. Look for the Red Sox to contend this year with their improved CP...

That's pretty cheap for a good bench player. Next year if Hatte is gone I'd sign Casey to a one year deal for about the same amount. Hopefully have him retire as a Red.

I was for the trade - even if it was for Dave Williams (EEEK!).

He's not worth $8M, but 700k?!? Speaking strictly for this year, salary for salary, player for player, I'd rather have Casey.

How did you think you were going to get more than Dave Williams for Casey when the primary purpose of the trade--from the genius O'Brien's standpoint--was to unload another ridiculous Bowden contract? Did you expect the Pirates to give us a good pitcher and salary relief? Even the Bucs are not that dense.

Casey was a bargain for 700,000. He has a career BA of .301 and has had a OBP of .350 or higher in 8 of 10 years. A good move by the Red Sox.

Sean Casey is a class act. Just having him around the clubhouse is a good addition for any team. Not a power hitter, but will hit around .300. Don't know how anyone could not like the mayor.

Good for you, Mayor. We're looking forward to seeing you in Cincinnati in June. Now, just because you are with the Red Sox, I will root for your team to do well. I hope you hit well above .300 and Kevin Youkilis will have to sit behind you.

My bad. My initial reaction was that you were saying that we kept Casey on the bench for $700K. As much as I liked Casey trading him was a good move. He was WAY too expensive to keep.

I agree with you. If we were going to have a good contact hitter on the bench, I'd pick Casey for $700K.

I loved Casey when he was here, I don't know bout every one here but I felt so bad what happend here when he left. To me it was a slap in the face i could only imagine how he felt. I hope that he puts up big numbers for the Sox. I bet he puts his fair share of dents in that green wall.

Casey would have to do more than hit well above .300 to replace Youk, he might have to go Tonya Harding on him. Youk gets on base at an extremely high clip, he sees more pitches than anyone in baseball, and he didn't make an error until the postseason. Casey's days are behind him but I'm sure he'll get a start and a standing O when the Saux come to Cincy this summer.

It make a differnce. If you are happy at work you preform better. Its as simple as that.

Sure, between two teams of the same skill, the team that is happier probably will win more games. However, if one team focusses on talent, and another "clubhouse presence", the team with more talent is going to win more games. However, in this case Casey is only a bench player so it really doesn't make a difference....
