I cannot remember if we've done this before, but the Kanye West thread got me thinking we should do a thread like this.

For my first of many nominations, I'll concur with the poster who said Kanye West.

I just don't get it.

Also don't get the obsession with CGI in movies. When movies start looking like video games, I'll pass.

Amen. It actually annoyed me three years ago. Even worse now.

Eating Fast Food.

Amen again. My stomach turns when I walk past and smell one of those places; and it turns when I see someone shoving that junk into their mouths.

Mine:

UFC. How exactly does watching a bunch of greased up, half naked guys make me more of a man? And why is it fans of the stuff actively and aggressively insist that "you gotta see this!"?

Country music - especially modern country music; and hip hop. Repetition only goes so far before it becomes boredom.

Reality TV.

Dumb luck game shows. Congratulations. You just chose what is inside a box. Now you get to chose another box. Wow.

The Cubs.

The addiction to texting via cell phones. My company has a rule restricting cell phones to designated areas only and after three warnings I actually had to place an employee on corrective action for habitually using their cell phone for texting.

Corporate layoffs following consistent down-cycles that use tenure as the guide rather than performance. Yeah, using "tenure" is less likely to get you sued, but it's also more likely to continue your downward spiral as the work done by potentially excellent employees gets re-distributed to others who are also possibly your real problem. I'll never be able to figure out how putting more on the plate of someone who's already less competent is anything but an absolutely awful idea. Cutting costs isn't going to fix the problem. Improving productivity will, and that means making an effort to retain your best people without regard to how long they've been there.

I cannot remember if we've done this before...

We had this thread started back in December 2004 (http://www.redszone.com/forums/showthread.php?t=30433), but IIRC it took some very serious turns that I hadn't intended when I started it.

Anyway, now that I've dug it up, I'll repeat some of my first post from that thread as my contribution to this one...

The white side panels on the Bengals black jerseys: If they were trying to emulate the white undersides of tigers, they failed. It doesn't work.

Prime Rib: It costs more than other steaks, and some people get all watery-mouthed just thinking about it. I think it's ugly, and prefer not to eat it. I guess I just don't get it.

Jessica Simpson: I don't think she's really that pretty, she certainly isn't intelligent, and watching her pained expressions and jerky movements when she sings is more annoying than long fingernails on a chalkboard. Yet many males I know don't hesitate to list her among today's top hotties. Needless to say, I just don't get it.

Outfield seats: I just don't like the view of the game from behind the outfield wall. I feel disoriented. As long as I'm between the bases, I'd rather be up high than be behind the wall. What am I missing here?

Reality television: When will this ever run its course? As soon as I found out that shows like The Bachelor and Survivor were scripted, I lost what little interest I had. Yet I know people who live and die with such shows (especially Survivor). Give me a good documentary on TLC or The History Channel, or a good ballgame of course. No fake reality television for me. I just don't get it.

Bowl Games: I have friends that get fired up looking forward to camping out in front of the set for bowl games all day January 1. Why? Why waste your day watching meaningless exhibition football games that no one will remember two months from now? I don't get it.

Bath and Body Works: Okay, some of that hand soap and body lotion smells really good, but at the prices they charge, it should. $4.00 for a little bottle of hand soap because it has little bead thingies in it? And what's the appeal of smelling like a cucumber? My wife has tried to explain, but I don't get it.

Hunting and fishing: Yes, growing up as a country boy, I tried both. I got into the fishing thing for a time, but never became addicted as some of my friends did. I always thought there was too thin a line between fishing and just sitting in a boat doing nothing. :D As for hunting, I had that experience forced on me as a kid, and hated every minute of it! What's so exciting about getting up at 3:00 or 4:00am and going out into the cold, just for the chance to kill something? I know hunting is needed to control the herds, and I'm all for the ones who want to do it, but I don't get the appeal.

Ipod. My brother bought me a nano for Christmas and I use it, but pretty much only as an easier way to move music to my stereo. I don't get much of a kick from walking around listening to music- it's too disorienting to me.

Hummers. I get it if you own a ranch, but any other non-military use of these things pretty much mystifies me.

"We". I love the Reds, but I don't play for them. It's "they" to me.

Golf club lust. I don't get the need to buy new clubs every couple of years. I'd rather spend my money on lessons and buckets of balls.

People who take the family to the ballpark, sit in the most expensive seats, eat dinner in the Machine Room, and go to the snack stand 3 or 4 times throughout the game. Also, they pick up a couple of souniveers and a program. And then complain that it costs too much to take a family to a Reds game.

Getting a dog as a pet, then chaining it to a house way in the back yard by the shed, and never paying it any attention. Oh, and getting frustrated when it gets wound up and excited because you try to pet it once in awhile.

Along those lines, people that pay top dollar to sit in said seats and then don't watch the game. If you're socializing, sit in the View Level, it's a much cheaper cover charge. Oh wait, don't that's the only place I can afford to sit. ;)

People complaining about things they can control their exposure to.

And a random list:

Hip hop, country music, soap operas, watching b list celebrities dance on TV, over reacting over a few flakes of snow, lower back tattoos, gas is expensive at $3 a gallon but coffee's fine at $4 for 12 ounces, and string theory.

I've likely already bloviated on this subject, but when did the trend of weather reporters trying to out-alarm their competition start? I mean, I like knowing that a tornado is heading my way, but the complete overkill reporting on *possible* 1" snow fall and thunderstorms in Kalamazoo has become a little silly.

I often wonder if it has something to do with corporate sponsors

"This weather report brought to you by the fine folks at [insert grocer here], who would like to remind you that milk, bread, eggs, side walk salt, and snow shovels are all on sale until the first flake falls, then the price triples, but only if you have that little card."

Not only local newscasts, but sweeps month in local newscasts.

"Is your shampoo killing you?"

Drives me crazy. It's like, if this is such important information, why do you only seem to discover it during sweeps month? Shouldn't you have broadcasted this last month instead of waiting until you are setting your advertising rates?

I'm the same way. I have caller id at home and if I don't recognize the number I don't answer. If it's that important you can leave a message and I will decide to call back or not. I just don't understand the obsession of cell phones and why some people have them glued to their ear. Cell phones are great for emergencies or in some cases for business but other than that I think not. I could wait to go home to call someone to talk about the game last night or whether my hair should be more blonde.

Expensive Purses. I understand that purses need to match the outfit/season, by why do they cost so much? And why are the expensive ones really, really ugly? I have one wallet that I use for a few years and it costs $20. Women buy 4 purses a year at the average cost of $150. What a waste of money.

Ohio Speed Limit set at 65mph. Driving to Missouri this winter I drove 65 in Ohio, 70 in Indiana, 65 in Illinois, and 70 in Missouri. Makes a lot of sense.

Why McDonald's employees can't speak English in their restaurants in Florida. What country are we in?

People coming through an express line with almost two hundred dollars worth of groceries(and me being on the receiving end).

The point in taking classes like biology and Art Appreciation when I am going for a business degree.

Why John Kruk still has a job with ESPN.

Agree with Steel on texting. My ex texted all the time, but I never got into it.

Having the Cincinnati Reds Caravan at the mall here in Parkersburg and Hollister blaring its music all through the mall. I wear Hollister, so I can't really say I don't understand it.

People (mostly teenagers) who say words like "shoot" and "dangit", words that are actually closer to swear words. If you are going to say something close to it, you might as well just go ahead and say the actual word. Nobody thinks you are cool, and you are going to just end up saying it eventually.

"PROMISE" scholarship in West Virginia. Where I attend college, PROMISE is the number one flunkouts. Why? 3.0 GPA and carrying 15 credit hours straight out of high school and you get a full ride. Send your kids to Partytown and expect them to live up to "PROMISE"? Go for it.

NASCAR definitely. Although after working with a guy who talked about Jeff Gordon non-stop, I really hope he never wins another race. UFC I would also put in that category.

My wife runs lots of 5ks, 10Ks, and some 1/2 marathons. Eventually she wants to run a marthon. She goes about 120 lbs and is generally "COLD" when the temperature hits < 70.

Tattoos. Let's admit it, they've become a fad.

Not when they are permanent. ;)

But I agree. What a ridiculous way, IMHO, to be making some sort of "statement". Add body piercing to that list also.

extreme/graphic violence in movies and video games

I can understand the attempts at a realistic portrayal of violence in certain movies in order to capture the historical reality of a particular situation (i.e. Saving Private Ryan, Schindler's List, etc). But movies like Saw and others I just don't get how people can find those "entertaining". It boggles my mind. As well as those, especially among the younger generation, who love games like Grand Theft Auto and many others where such gratuitous violence and language is the norm. We've come a long way from pong and Pac-Man. And yes, I do believe it does desensitize those that play them regularly.

partisan politics

Not throwing that but there for debate/discussion (I understand the forum rules). Only that I, after time, have returned to my "roots" which is "I don't get it". Two sides so distrustful of each other, each thinking they hold the key to true absolutes, and not only unyielding/compromising; but hellbent on destroying the other. With the general public, overall, caught in the middle of the nastiness.

I am not joking in our "formal" living room we have two couches and on these two couches there are thirty-four pillows, all of which were bought before we were married.

My wife wants to remodel/expand and turn our 2 1/2 car garage into a huge family room, then build a new garage, so she can convert the current front living room into a "formal" living room (that room where no one can ever go).

I told her I have no problem with that at all...... after I'm dead and buried because it's a stupid waste of money IMO. Just so you can have a room for show in your house?

People who don't obey the "slower traffic keep right" signs on the highway.

Grocery stores that have 7 registers open but only 2 baggers.

Really?

Maybe I unintentionally implied something. Or maybe I'm just crazy. Maybe both. Anyway, for the record, I don't like steroids being in sports, but more specifically, in baseball, why can't we just say, "There was a time when some players used steroids, but now there is very thorough testing that results in a long suspension or banishment if tested positive," and then move on?

It's not like we can prove any players did steroids years ago. All we can do is speculate. Some people are still arguing that steroids don't even help baseball players. Personally, I just don't care. Have a good testing and discipline policy, and then move on. I don't care who says what in federal court because it won't result in anything happening other than, possibly, some asterisks.

Every damn dish she makes has panchetta in it, and plenty of it.

She's Food Network's attempt at a sex symbol in the kitchen, along with Sandra Lee (who also can't cook, but at least she admits it). Rumor has it you're very attractive.

And if you're already self-depricating about your culinary talents, then you've got 1 leg up on those no talent butt clowns Giada and Rachel Ray. I'm convinced they both think their crap doesn't stink, and they walk on water. Couldn't be any farther from the truth.

I can actually stomach Semi-homemade with Sandra Lee b/c she's not hard on the eyes, and she admits that she doesn't cook, she just enhances dishes and what not. She's all fluff, with admittedly no substance. As long as someone's up front about that, I can rally behind the cause.

But seriously Giada, stop smiling.

It was really interesting to watch Rachel Ray pair up with Mario Batali vs. Giada and Bobby Flay on Iron Chef America. Both RR and Giada were ridiculously out of their elements, and admitted it to a degree. Hard to say how both of them have handled their ICA exposure, but I'm hoping it was humbling for both of them.

Well, there is a lesson to be learned here, I think. By general American standards, Rachael and Giada are both highly attractive (and not, contrary to some of the opinions expressed here, fat). I can't speak to the quality of their cooking, because a) I can barely tell an heirloom tomato from arugula, and b) I've never tried their food (I love to watch cooking shows these days, but I'd never go so far as to try to imitate them). But regardless of their talents, they make the cut for What Women Should Look Like When They're On TV. And before you start with the "but she's a dawg1!111!!" talk -- no. You are being fusty and it's like me saying I would legitimately kick Jake Gyllenhall out of my kitchen because he doesn't happen to be my type. By American standards, these are good-looking women. Beautiful straight hair, clear skin, nice figures, huge, frequent, and annoying smiles, the works. And they are appealing. They seem like nice girls.

The dude chefs on TV don't have to be nice or attractive. If they're nasty, they're seen as entertaining. If they're ugly, people don't notice so much because their food is so good. I'm not saying that an attractive female chef can't be good at what she does nor am I saying that a talented male chef has to be ugly. But I am saying that the pool of female chefs that are Food Network-ready is immediately smaller given America's standards of beauty. The best male chef in the country may well get his own TV show no matter what he looks like. If the best female chef in the country weighs 350 pounds and is mean, there's not a chance in hell she's getting her own show. And chances are there'd be someone posting on this thread saying they don't get how that Miss Nasty McFatterson ever got her own cooking show.

And I still like Giada and want her to make me dinner.

I'd argue that Giada is highly attractive by most standards, whereas Rachel Ray is at most "cute", as long as she's not talking. Once she opens her mouth, then she's quite possibly one of the least attractive people ever. Ever.

While Giada is Italian, it's amusing that her show is "Everyday Italian". She tries to make her dishes more complicated than they need to be. If it's supposed to be everyday Italian, then why stray from the simplicity? Why try and reinvent the wheel? Italian cuisine is usually mighty tasty, both the Northern and the Southern varieties, and while I applaud her efforts to introduce both varieties in her show, keep it simple missy. Let the natural flavors of the cuisine do the talkin', no need to augment and enhance dishes that quite frankly don't need any help in the taste department. I guarantee if Giada was hard on the eyes, she wouldn't have a show, b/c her food and her cooking just isn't that good.

Case in point: Barefoot Contessa. She is a really good cook, while being hard on my eyes, and I'd guess hard on the eyes of many others. Bottomline, she's just not attractive, but her cooking is. She's your Miss Nasty McFatterson example. She's a big girl, and she could use a make over and a gym membership something fierce, but wow can she cook. Giada? Not so much. Rachel Ray? She's less attractive than Giada, more attractive than the Barefoot Contessa, but is easily the worst cook of the 3. I guess RR is supposed to represent Jane Q Public, in being average but "cute" in looks, and having a similar appeal with personality. I find her voice and personality brash and abrasive.

As for the male side of the coin... There's varying degrees of looks and varying degrees of cooking skill/talent represented on the Food Network. The norm seems to be that the men let their cooking do the talking, and net them a show, whereas there don't seem to be too much eye candy on FN that can't cook. Sort of the reverse for the women. You have to have some serious talent, or be serious eye candy if you're a male and cooking on a regular basis on Food Network.

I don't know; I don't think it's wrong to find a "typically beautiful" woman to be unattractive. I find all kinds of women beautiful, but I also happen to know exactly what I find unattractive in someone. That doesn't make me or anyone else necessarily chauvinistic or even unrealistic.

Most truly beautiful women really aren't even camera-ready. I like frowning and, well, frowning just doesn't translate to the big screen very often. (Not pouting, mind you, frowning--scowling--glowering).

Yea, but there's a big difference between "she's not my type" and "shes a chubby pig" or "she's fat" when she's 5'6" and 130lbs or something.

Not saying folks here are doing that, but some folks just have a preference for an athletic body. Others, have unrealistic demands for a certian standard body type which is (IMO) a reflection on them more than anything.

Every damn dish she makes has panchetta in it, and plenty of it.

She's Food Network's attempt at a sex symbol in the kitchen, along with Sandra Lee (who also can't cook, but at least she admits it). I don't think anyone's argued that there aren't basic standards of beauty in this country, or anywhere.

I think it's just that the diversity of opinion in the *individual*, idiosyncratic taste in beauty is so great as to reduce that absolute standard to meaninglessness.

In any given magazine, I find a small sliver of the women therein to be attractive, typically. I can't explain all of it for myself, and I suppose I could explain why others might find that person attractive (long legs, symmetrical features, big eyes, no scabs, etc), but for myself, if something is amiss, then it's not there. Not of course, that I couldn't develop a renewed notion of their beauty under different circumstances or after having known them for awhile, but I genuinely find many more "everyday women" to be more attractive than the "standard beauties." But I'm probably in the minority on that.

The one and only tipping point for beauty is personality, certainly.

But absent knowing the person, I find that beauty in a woman lies much more often in carriage than in exterior unchanging features (nose, eyes, breasts, what-have-you); I love, love, love a changeable face--Helen Mirren comes to mind--she can be gorgeous one moment, peculiar the next. I like that. I don't want to see someone with a ghoulish perma-smile every day of my life. That's not beautiful, it's disconcerting. Ironically, I find that Kate Winslet falls into the "changeable" camp, though I just railed on her annoying-ness in an earlier post.

While there are some Helens of Troy out there that have an irremediable allure, they are such outliers in my mind as to be, well, almost refined out of existence.

You guys have taken my point way off course. I didn't in any way intend to appeal to people's individual tastes -- tastes always vary. My point was that there is a threshold of -- not even beauty, but attractiveness, that is the standard for women on television. YOU may not find either of these women attractive, but there's no doubt they both meet that threshold. Surely you recognize that -- even if YOU find those particular features repulsive, you can recognize that a well-figured, wide-grinned, clear-skinned woman has a better shot at a television career than an overweight, buck-toothed, acne-laden one, even if you find the latter more personally appealing.

A good example is that female newscasters are typically REQUIRED to wear their hair straight, because straight hair is believed within that industry to make a woman look younger than curly hair. A lot of men love curly hair on women, but this is an industry standard based upon what has been determined to be aesthetically appealing for television.

Of course I can admit there's a "range" of camera-ready qualities that a woman must possess. But that changes over time a lot, and well, I admitted it already in my post above.

There seems to be a standard with cable news. How often can you turn on any of them and find a woman anchor or reporter who isn't attractive?

Media overreaction to just about everything -- worst ever, best ever or this will kill you and that is bad for you, etc.

My favorite line came from a local news promo about the new style of kid's pants with lots of pockets: "Are Bay Area teens DRESSED TO KILL?"

Hilarious.

I rarely watch the actual cooking shows, but I watch some of the Food Network shows about places to eat. I liked Rachael Ray a lot in the early $40 A Day shows. And the Diners & Dives etc., and some of the Bobby Flay shows... good stuff. There's also a show on MOJO called "Three Sheets" that I've caught a couple of times. I'm not much of a drinker but that show can be pretty funny.

I love, love, love a changeable face--Helen Mirren comes to mind--she can be gorgeous one moment, peculiar the next. I like that. I don't want to see someone with a ghoulish perma-smile every day of my life.

I also have a strong preference for the low-maintenance, expressive, naturally smiling, fresh face, as opposed to the breathing mannequins.

Really glad the Beagle won, given the other options.

Absolutely.

Back to the subject of the thread, here's what I don't get about dog shows in general -- if the judging is supposed to measure the dog against the standard of the breed, why do poodles win so often? Are all poodles perfect? I always thought being a dog-show judge would be the easiest gig ever: judge each dog against the standard of the breed and then pick the poodle.

I honestly think that most women that everyone attaches "hot, sexy'' to is usually not as attractive as someone who can go out, not wear makeup, and still look gorgeous! But I guess that everyone has their own opinion.

And I'd argue that Abraham Lincoln would have a harder time getting elected to the presidency if he ran in the TV age.

I'll bet Abe Lincoln didn't look that bad for the era.

While the Nixon and Kennedy picture is intriguing, that election was so close it could have gone either way. My feeling is that it wasn't Kennedy's good looks that put him over the edge.

And ugly Nixon ended up gettting elected later- twice.

McClellan called him a gorilla, and others made less flattering remarks. There is a story of a woman who had went to ask a favor of him, and after he granted it, she said something to the effect of, "everyone says he's ugly, but to me he looked very nice." Far from an accurate quote, but you get the idea.

He was viewed as a freak by those who saw him in person, actually. It was not so much the face (which was also viewed as unattractive) but the stance. He was 6'4" which was all but a giant at the time, but was incredibly skinny which, given the 160 years between this time and the Rachael Ray era, was viewed as extremely unattractive. Because of the accounts of the size of his freakishly long limbs and his poor health, he is believed to have suffered from Marfan's syndrome, which makes a person traditionally unattractive due to the disproportionately long limbs and sunken chest. Basically, he was viewed as a misshaped freak with very harsh facial features.

But, take your pick, really. I think Martin Van Buren would have been laughed off television as well. Franklin Pierce, on the other hand, was a total hottie. He was also a horrible president.

The thing about Nixon that a still photo didn't show was how nervous and uneasy he looked, while JFK was smooth as buttah.

Nixon's upper lip was sweating too, which added to his image problems. That debate changed history and the way politicians used television forever.

I totally agree- and people made big deal out of it and still do- I guess it's just hard to sort of buy that when Kennedy barely won, unless he was so much of an underdog up until the debate, which could have given him just enough to push him past Nixon.

Yea, but in that time slot, who is more likely to be awake and listening to the radio? The factory guy who just listened to a ballgame and has to be up at 5:30am or the millions of long haul truckers who run at night to avoid trafic?

It's a niche market when looking at the overall picture, but in that time slot truckers might actually be the majority, or at least a very large market to target.

And maybe it has something to do with the signal being stronger at night. In the day time they aim at a local audience, but at night when you are covering 20+ states or whatever, it makes more sense to aim at a more national or at least regional market?

Just guessing.

Bad golfers who refuse to use the correct equipment.

If you're a bad golfer, you need all the help you can get. Embrace technology. Don't use what a Tour Pro uses. Especially their golf ball. Bad golfers need spin, and lots of it. Stop playing Pro Vs. It's a waste of your money, and it's actually hurting your bad golf game. Also, you don't swing like a Tour Pro, you don't generate that kinda clubhead speed. You don't need to swing a telephone pole, you need to swing a garden hose. Use a regular flex shaft, for pete's sake.

You know, I didn't mind it all that much when my Dad did this (and he did, all the time), but now that you mention it, it is a loathsome practice.

Funny story attached to that. One of the assistants in our office got an enormous Whitman sampler that she left open for anyone who wanted to grab a piece. Throughout the morning the treats dwindled, but I noticed as I was leaving for lunch that someone had bitten one in half and returned the uneaten portion to its little paper cup. I don't even begin to understand the mind that does something like that.

Interesting take. I've played both, and head to head keeps me interested, though it does have its flaws.

My league members developed a point system that is so awesome and reflects pretty true value.

Rotisserie fails for me in many regards. For one, it doesn't do rate stats, it just counts.

For another, most leagues give stolen bases 20% weight, and that's way too much. Juan Pierre should not be that valuable.

I like head to head points based leagues. I want true value with common sense.

The downside to head to head leagues is that you can score the second most points in a week and get a loss. That stinks.

But I'd rather have that than have somebody do far ahead at the All-Star break that you can't catch them, which is what my experience with Rotisserie Leagues has been.

My answer to the above problem with head to head leagues is to have everybody play everybody every week. Kind of like combining rotisserie and head to head. I couldn't get it passed in my league, though, because my league loves head to head.

Must be something about 21st birthdays. I drank a whole bottle on my 21st birthday. I was horribly hung over the next day. I longed for death.

Back at work on Monday, I didn't feel good the 2nd day. The 3rd day, I thought the worm must have been bad and thought I had a permanent hangover.

Almost every roto league I have been in we have had a guy that leads for the first few months, another guy that leads the next couple of months, and finally a third guy that wins in the end. Maybe that is just my personal experience. You are right that you can lose the league in your first couple of months, and some teams are never going to come back. But that is why I love roto; it is a dog fight from the start and extremely competitive day in and day out. You have to set your rosters every single day and make adjustments...
