With the first pick of the 2008 Redszone draft, the Dolphins select...

Glenn Dorsey, DT, LSU

Screwball

The Rams are torn. The main reason they did so poorly last year was because the offensive line was decimated with injuries. Not to mention Orlando Pace is getting on in years, and needs to be replaced relatively soon. Jake Long would be a great fit.

However, Chris Long has all kinds of pass rushing skills (14 sacks and 23 QB hurries during his All-American season last year at Virginia) to go along with the excellent pedigree of being HOF Howie Long's son. The Rams need to seriously upgrade the DE position, and Chris Long would do just that.

So, without further ado, the St. Louis Rams pick...

Chris Long, DE, Virginia.

Dorsey = Solid pick. I'm not dancing in the streets over him, but he was pretty dominant in college and DL like that are always hard to find. Hard to argue.

Chris Long? I like him, but might be a reach with the 2nd pick. But to be honest, in the Rams situation, they have needs everywhere and this should certainly fill one.

Buckeye33

I'm not a fan of the Dorsey pick. He is not a 3-4 type NT. He is a 4-3 DT and the Dolphins will never play a 4-3. If you factor in his health risks, he isn't worth the investment as a #1 pick for the Dolphins. If a 4-3 team had the #1 pick, he might be worth it. If I had the pick I would have selected Jake Long. Being infull rebuild mold, that locks up your right tackle for 10-15 years.

Chris Long screams Justin Smith Jr, but I think he'll end up more like a poor mans Aaron Kampman. The Rams need D, and I think Long is the safest pick.

I love Glenn Dorsey, but he wouldn't be my pick at number 1. This draft class really doesn't have that really great talent though.

http://blog.oregonlive.com/idahosportugal/small_kiper_170x220.jpg: "Dorsey is a very strong selection. He does everything very well and is a superb athlete. I'd also like to note that my hair is formed to my scalp like a protective helmet."

A reach at 2? Plenty of mocks have him going #1 overall. He had an excellent combine, he's the best DE in the draft, and the Rams' needs are DE, OT, and LB, in that order. If the 'Fins don't take him with the first pick, the Rams would do well to take him.

With the 3rd Pick in the 2008 Redzone NFL Mock Draft, The Atlanta Falcons Select...

http://images.athlonsports.com/d/6668-1/MattRyan_001.jpg

Matt Ryan, Boston College

Reason: Pretty much the best QB on the board. Is he an elite player? Probably not, but he's the best the Falcons are gonna do this year.

Patrick Bateman

In normal Raider like fashion, I'm looking high upside, bust potential, plus character concerns.

With no further ado, Darren McFadden, RB, Arkansas

Edskin
02-29-2008, 08:37 PM
I'm iffy on the Ryan pick. On one hand, the Falcons are desperate for a QB, but on the other, I don't see that as a situation where a young QB is going to be given the proper time to develop-- and I don't see Ryan being "ready" right away. If I were you Sonny, I would have gone with Jake Long.

AK-- I also would have gone with Jake Long.

I would have taken Long too, except that when picking for the Raiders, it's best to ignore logic and take the riskiest alternative available.

With Redman resigning today with Atlanta, I would imagine Ryan will get eased in this season. Look for his debut around game week 7 or 8.

The Cincinnati Bengals have many directions to look at. The trade for Dewayne Robertson does solidify a need, but they could still upgrade at DT again as well. What was a strength at linebacker has turned into a weakness with Pollack's injury and the fall of Odell Thurman. The secondary could be addressed with Madieu Williams leaving, but the best safety available is now falling into the late first.

With that being said, the Cincinnati Bengals select *drumroll*

Keith Rivers (LB-USC)

Hmmm, would your pick have changed if you knew Robertson really isn't a Bengal?

With Ellis, Dorsey, and Gholston gone I think Rivers is the best available player for the Bengals if you don't factor in the offensive side of the ball.

Not really. IMO, its BPA.

I think there is a lot deeper depth at the linebacking spot in the second-third round. There is also a lot of DE's available as well. I would have liked Phillips, but I think he has played himself out of the top 15.

My wish list would be something like this:
Sedrick Ellis
Glenn Dorsey
Vernon Gholston
Ryan Clady(face it, the OL is getting old)
Keith Rivers

Hi, everybody. I'm Mickey Loomis, general manager of the New Orleans Saints, and I'm here to announce the New Orleans Saints' first pick of the 2008 RedsZone NFL Mock Draft.

As a team, we would be very intersted in getting an impact center or tight end in the draft, but I don't see one available who would justify the 10th overall pick. With that said, based on our needs, we decided to focus on defense for this pick.

Ideally, we'd improve at cornerback, linebacker, or defensive tackle. Seeing as how Glenn Dorsey and Sedrick Ellis are already gone, we will wait to address that particular need.

Keith Rivers might have been our next pick, but with the recent acquisition of Jonathan Vilma, we are not going to sweat it too much. Thus, through the process of elimination, we will most definitely be choosing a cornerback.

We are very intrigued by Aqib Talib. His size is obviously impressive, and his name just sounds really cool. We happen to like Mike Jenkins, too, but there are some character questions there. We feel that Leodis McKelvin is just as good Jenkins, is a bit more polished, and has more to offer on special teams, hence:

Ahhh.. the first real stretch of the draft, IMO. The Redskins need a WR and I was thinking about Sweed at 21, but also thought that might be a bit high. I think 11th is way too early to take him, especially when the Bills already have one good young WR (Evans).

I know it's a bit of a stretch, but the Bills' biggest need is a big WR to complement Evans, and I liked him better than Malcolm Kelly, myself. I thought about Dan Connor and Aqib Talib, but felt Sweed was the better pick.

Agreed. If anything, Malcolm Kelly is the top receiver and he is likely to go in the top 15.

Sweed is similar but the injury history is concerning.

With the 12th pick in the 08 draft Mike "splinter" Shanahan and the Denver Broncos select:

http://www.nfldraftdog.com/images/Kenny%20Phillips.jpg

Kenny Phillips, S, Miami

I honestly would think Shanahan would try and trade down here and take Phillips later. Obviously I can't do that. I still don't think he's a reach at 12. He's a play maker and with Dorsey, Ellis, Long, Gholston, and Clady gone I had no choice. It was either Phillips or Chris Williams from Vanderbilt. Shanahan seems to think his Oline is better than it is. Phillips is the pick.

With the 14th pick in the 2008 draft, the Chicago Bears select:

More info possibly later on as to why this guy was my pick. My wife gave birth to our 4th child the other day and things are somewhat crazy right now.

Detroit (*BaseClogger*) is on the clock.

Edskin
03-06-2008, 08:15 AM
Whoa! Back to back surprise picks.

First of all, I LOVE Heather's pick of Brohm for Carolina. Any QB is always a risk, but the Panthers really need a young QB to groom and I think Brohm is going to be a good one. I also think Carolina is in a pretty good situation for him to enter into.

BuckeyeRedleg??? I'm not destroying the selection by any means, because Chicago certainly needs some playmakers, but my general philosophy is that RB is an overrated position in the NFL UNLESS you have an elite back like Adrian Peterson. I'm not sure Mendenhall fits that bill.

Also, the Bears lost Berrian and Muhhamed at WR--desperate there, especially if they expect better results from the dynamic duo at QB (Grossman/Orton).

Having said that, I don't hate the pick, but I would have gone with Malcom Kelly or maybe Talib.

I guess you could say the same thing for WR's, Ed. And I'm digging Mendenhall. I think he's special. Also, I think I can get a quality WR, OL, and QB later.

It starts with being able to run the ball. You aren't going to pass the ball (especially with Grossman/Orton) if you can't run the ball and Benson and that OL is not getting it done.

Kenny Phillips showed up for Carolina in a mock draft I saw the other day. I had him on my radar until I decided I would rather have a good QB for the Panthers since they haven't really had one in a while. ;)

And I'm glad I made a good pick. I did a lot of research because I was really clueless on where to start for Carolina but it appears they actually need a lot of help overall so that made it easier. :D

Listen to me! I'm Matt Millen!

http://i.a.cnn.net/si/2006/writers/jay_clemons/12/14/millen.lions/T1_1214_millen.jpg

I have an infatuation with skill players! My team needs some more excitement in the return game and has plenty of size receivers. I should take a running back, as that would be the sane thing to do, since my team has zero ground game, but I remind you that my name is Matt Millen. Therefore, I select the electrifying DeSean Jackson from California!

http://i.usatoday.net/sports/_photos/2007/10/02/deseanx.jpg

My fans will laugh at this pick. Then, five months from now, we will win all of our preseason games and the talk-radio heads will start pumping up our 2008 Lions. The fans will get excited and we will sell out every game. We will start the season hot, only for the season to come to a crashing halt when it seems we have finally reached the playoffs. We will start commiting five turnovers in every game! Then, our fans will blame me for all of it, as they should, because it will have been my fault since I only focus on skill players. But hey! I can't wait to grab Mike Hart in the second round, since he is one of the only running backs in the draft that can't improve the 2008 Lions ground attack!

The Texans were surprised that Jonathan Stewart was still available at their pick and gave heavy consideration to both him and Cason at the corner. Despite that, after investing in Matt Schaub and watching him spend too long on the injured list they've decided to address the o-line.

With the 18th pick the Houston Texans select:

Chris Williams - OT - Vanderbilt

No way the Eagles draft QBs in two consecutive years. They seem to be pretty high on Kevin Kolb and have other more pressing needs.

The Philadelphia Eagles select QB Joe Flacco out of the University of Delaware.

I really hope this is a joke.

In addition to selecting a QB first round, Flacco is probably the fifth best QB on the board(Woodson and Henne will go before him), and he will probably go no earlier than the third round.

Highlifeman21
03-09-2008, 10:05 AM
1. I don't see the Eagles being that high on Kolb.
2. I don't see McNabb ending the year in an Eagles uniform.
3. Competition at the QB position is never a bad thing.
4. Flacco was ranked 3rd on Kiper's board, and another guy that does boards for ESPN. Woodson was ranked 5th, behind Henne, by both.

I looked at the LB position for the Eagles, but wasn't in love with any of the guys available, whereas Flacco had a good combine, and with his size is projected to fight for a starting position in no longer than 3 years due to the pro-style offense Delaware supposedly ran (although I can safely say that I haven't seen 1 snap of Delaware football, ever).

So who do you really think the Eagles would have taken?

Given the current break down I think the Eagles would take Jeff Otah or Phillip Merling to strengthen one of their two biggest weaknesses. Most drafts have Philly taking an OT or DL in this spot. If not these two then they might go for Malcom Kelly who will be long gone in the real draft. All three of these players will likely go in the top 20 in April. If they really wanted a QB (doubtful), they could probably still take one of Flacco, Woodson, or Henne at the end of the second round.

Has there ever been a team take a QB in the first 40 picks in back to back years? I doubt it for two reasons. One, QBs are expensive regardless of where your draft them. Two, coaches and GMs hate to admit they made a mistake and drafting a QB in two straight drafts would be admitting a mistake.

Wow, the Redskins are VERY suprised to see that their top 3 options are ALL still available with the 21st pick:

Here's the big question for the Redskins:

--In order to improve the team for NEXT YEAR, another offensive threat/WR is needed. RB is a strength and Santana Moss, Atwaan Randle-El, and Chris Cooley are a solid receving trio, but an explosive/bigger player could be a huge help to Jason Campbell.

--With the lingering injury to Carlos Rogers, CB is also a potential need, and a very important position for any team.

--The Redskins are decent along the lines of scrimmage, but getting VERY old there. Reinforcements are needed.

This is a very tough choice, indeed. Aqib Talib is available and tantalzing, and there are several offensive line prospects that are intruiging, but when push comes to shove, we want to give our young QB as much help as possible.

Therefore, with the 21st pick, the Washington Redskins select....

Malcolm Kelly, WR, Oklahoma.

I looked at the D linemen available, and that is a concern of the Eagles.

I must admit, I was influenced by my zealot Eagles fans friends from Philly that like Flacco, and like him a lot. They don't like Kolb, and have voiced concerns to move him, and essentially replace him with Flacco. I guess being semi local, Flacco has a decent following in the Tri-State area (DE, SE PA, S NJ).

I guess ultimately it comes down to where they see McNabb finishing the season, and who takes control of the ship should he be moved.

I picked up Ryan Grant last year and hope to protect him as one of my keeper's in FFB, so I hope he's the real deal. I wonder how Favre leaving that offense will effect him.

A Stewart and Barber tandem would be scary. Would there be enough carries for both with Romo slinging it? I think Barber finally feels happy to have J. Jones out of his hair and Stewart might mess his mind up. Barber is a top 5 talent at the RB position. It will be interesting to see what numbers he puts up if he remains the main back (without a tandem).

We as an organization simply could not pass on the player we had rated #1 on our board. You never know when an injury could happen to your star running back in this league. As well, we did lose Michael Turner this off season and feel that in this day in age in the NFL, you must have two quality running backs.

We feel we could have selected a defensive or offensive lineman to add depth to our very deep team, but we feel Mr. Stewart simply was to good to pass up.

We will look to add line depth later in the draft.

When I choose for the 49ers, I want to trade my pick to the Packers in exchange for the rights to Brett Favre (since you know he'll flip-flop on his decision to retire). No, but seriously . . . every mock draft has the 49ers taking a 'tweener or a wide receiver. A wide receiver is almost never worth the first round contract they receive because it usually takes them until their third year to start producing consistently. I might even go defensive tackle, but they turn out to be busts so often that I might just fall back on the obvious choice, Groves. Well, we'll find out soon, I guess.

Another d'oh. I had no idea they signed JJ. I def. don't see the need for a RB in the first round now. I should've just gone with DT Kentwan Balmer and been done with it.

I think the Seahawks were stupid for signing Julius Jones. As a Cowboys fan, I saw definite signs of a RB that had lost his nerve and was gun-shy about getting hit. Felix Jones is a great pick here. My God, he averaged 8.7 yards a carry this season.

With the 28th pick, the Dallas Cowboys are pleased to select Wideout James Hardy out of Indiana.

http://bp1.blogger.com/_37tTNIaU8Io/Rr8DTlg-s8I/AAAAAAAAACo/rmsLECslHdw/s200/trucked.jpg

Our WR corps are getting older and we feel that Hardy can step in and instantly fill a big role for our team. Lining up opposite Terrell Owens, we will have two very big targets to go to.

Hello, my homies. Haha. I love saying "homies". Anway, I'm Scot McCloughan, general manager of the San Francisco 49ers. I'm new at this GMing thing, so please cut me some slack. Anyway, down to business . . .

To be honest with you, we'd love to upgrade at quarterback. Alex Smith isn't very good, but we invested a #1 overall pick in him, so we need to maintain the illusion that he may turn out to be adequate. Just in case you're not convinced that we're committed to our commitment of showing that Alex Smith's inevitable failure is a result of him not being a good quarterback as opposed to us grooming him incorrectly, we've made a more-than-half-assed effort (closer to a three-quartered-ass effort, actually) to surround him with average-to-above-average talent.

In fact, last year, we '(un)intelligently' traded our 2009 first round draft pick to the Patriots just so we could pick up an offensive tackle, Joe Staley, who might not be a bust. We've also invested an unjustified amount of money to an oft-injured Vernon Davis, a used-to-be-good Isaac Bruce, an impossible-to-please Ashley Lelie, and an exiting-his-prime Darrell Jackson. Combined with Frank Gore, who actually doesn't suck at running back, and Arnaz Battle, who is capable of consistently hauling in 600 yards of receiving per season, we've put together an offensive group that will provide much optimism (and eventually a matching amount of disappointment).

Needless to say, our offensive situation is set, aside from quarterback, wide receiver, offensive line, etc. Therefore, we'll obviously be focusing on improving our 3-4-based defense.

We could use some help at the safety position as a result of having no depth and Mark Roman being Mark Roman. However, we've got bigger needs, so we'll wait to address the secondary later in the draft.

Our defensive line is despair. We just signed Justin Smith to a huge contract for crying out loud. Anyone we draft to address our needs on the defensive line will ultimately fail since our opponents already have a can't-miss strategy to stop us at the line. Our opponents' strategy to address our defensive unit is as follows:

The center stops Aubrayo Franklin (NT). The left guard stops Ray McDonald (DE). Justin Smith (DE) will go unblocked (but make plenty of tackles near the secondary). The tackles will handle Manny Lawson (LB) and Patrick Willis (LB). The right guard, whose main priority is to step in and block in case one of their linemen trips at the line of scrimmage, just kind of stands around and tries not to get called for false starts. That's where our draft strategy kicks in.

We want someone to occupy that fifth offensive lineman. This way, when an opponents' linemen trips at the line of scrimmage, we'll have someone to go after the quarterback.

At linebacker, we're very happy with what Patrick Willis and Manny Lawson can do when/if they are on the field at the same time, but we still have a need for pass-rushers. Although we'd prefer to get that from a defensive lineman, there isn't anyone available who we feel is good enough to make a difference, and if there is, it would be at the expense of leaving out a lot of my jokes in this post.

As a result, we have predictably decided to go with Quentin Groves, who projects to be an outside-linebacker with explosive speed. When he's not chasing the quarterback, we can also use him as a road cone to help direct the opponents' ball-carrying traffic toward Patrick Willis.

The New York Football Giants, Super Bowl 42 champions, have an interesting decision. We, the aforementioned Super Bowl champs, have to go defense. We, the Super Bowl champions, have lost three starters from the Super Bowl win over the Patroits (two LB's and a safety).

Safety is out because the only guy worth a pick around this slot at safety is Kenny Phillips, and he is long gone. Defensive tackle would possibly be worth thinking about. Kentwan Balmer is still on the board but two things lead me away from this pick. One, he is a one year wonder and those guys have huge bust rates and two, I think we can get a DT later. Cornerback is also an option - but with the top 4 guys already off the board, well....

That leads me to LB's. As a Giants fan, Super Bowl 42 champs, me luvs some LBs! Groves would have been a great fit. Guy who played DE in college, dropped back to LB as a junior but still played some with his hand down, runs a 4.55. Great fit for Spags. But he got stolen from the Super Bowl 42 champs. Stolen!! Nice pick by the 49ers there.

That leaves us with a choice of two. Jerod Mayo from Tenn and Dan Connor from PSU. Mayo is faster, Connor is probably better. We, the Super Bowl 42 Champions, look at the times in the 3-Cone drill because we, the SB42 champs, believes it translates to football speed and football agility most closely of all the combine drills. Connor did not do his 3-Cone yet and Mayo had an impressive 40 time and an impressive 3-cone time, but we need a guy for the weakside and we believe Connor better fits.

Therefore, with the 31st pick, the New York Football Giants, Super Bowl XLII Champions, select Dan Connor, LB, Penn State University

The Raiders, dead set on adding a 'playmaker' add WR Devin Thomas to the fold. He has the tools you want in a receiver, and arguably has as much upside as any wide reciever. However, he's as raw as any and wont aid in the devlopment of JaMarcus Russell for at least a few years. For a team with so many problems, taking such a risk seems silly right? Meh... we're all about the upside in Oakland, even if it means wasting an early second.

Cause Michael Jenkins aint gettin' it done as a playmaker.I like the pick. The Falcons a flashy player. Doucet really impressed me last year. IIRC, wasn't he the guy that was measured much shorter at the combine than he was listed at?

With the 40th pick in the 2008 NFL Draft, the San Francisco 49ers select Limas Sweed WR Texas.

http://www.mackbrown-texasfootball.com/image_lib/sweed_limas_110106_300.jpg

With the 41st pick in the 2008 NFL Draft, the New Orleans Saints select Kentwan Balmer DT North Carolina.

We as an organization are clearly looking to upgrade the defensive side of the ball. We selected a great CB in the 1st round and could not pass on Balmer here in the 2nd.

The Bengals are on the clock with their second round pick...

The team already addressed a weakness in the first round by adding a weakside linebacker in Keith Rivers, who will provide an immediate impact on run support. However, there are still other holes to fill.

Madieu Williams left during the offseason and while the team is confident in Marvin White and Chiduke Ndukwe as starters, they could use some depth. However, after losing out on two defensive tackles via trade, they will look to add a DT here.

The Cincinnati Bengals select:

Having addressed our most glaring need by selecting WR Malcolm Kelly in the first round, the Redskins are now looking to improve along the lines of scrimmage. The current interior OL is solid, but aging. However, with Brandon Albert long gone, we really don't see any 2nd round value at the OG spot.

The next need area would be adding depth/pass rushing to the DL. We are a bit wary of his reported laziness, but he seems to have good character and tremendous upside. So, with the 52nd pick in the NFL draft, the Washington Redskins select....

First, let me apologize. Due to unexpected earthquakes and hurricanes, the 49ers and Saints were unable to make their picks in due time. However, should the mock draft go to a third round, I will most likely be more prepared thanks to the government funding/guilt money I've received. The picks made on my behalf were good ones (especially the pick of Sweed, if that would have worked out). Still, the 49ers and Saints are very happy to have the likes of Merling and Balmer in the fold. Thank you, Buckeye33, and thank you, America.

Jeremy Stevens is gone, and Seattle needs a legitimate TE - Marcus Pollard and Jeb Putzier aren't very good.

The Seahawks take TE Dustin Keller from Purdue.

Having addressed our most glaring need (OT) in the 1st round, the braintrust of the Jags is now looking to add either a WR or DE. We haven't had much luck with WR's in the draft, so we're a bit wary to take a shot at Jordy Nelson-- although we are very intruiged.

In the end, we went with an upside player who we hope can generate a pass rush from the edge to compliment our strong run D.

The Jags select...

Lawrence Jackson, DE, USC

I think a big spot the Packers need is a big FB. This may be a round too early but I'd rather pick him now just in case. So there's no one that I'd rather have at FB other than.

Alongside Marion Barber, Rice should help to quickly form one of the best 2 back tandems in the league.

We had Bruce Davis as one of the top line-backing options on our board and are delighted that he is still available.

Anyway, I'm going out of town starting tonight (I'll be gone until Sunday) and I won't have any consistant internet access. You are from OKC (I lived in the OKC area until I was 12 btw). I would not expect you to be a fan of a guy who played for UT but his stats were pretty awesome in 2007. He is an All-American sprinter as well who has the ability to score at anytime. The Colts were not happy last season with Keith's blocking and his ability to catch the ball out of the backfield so they need another RB as a change of pace for Addai. Who better than a guy whose college career was much better than Addai's and who many think hasn't reached his peak yet? Addai is also injury-prone. Charles has the potential to be better than Addai, who just barely averaged 4 yards a carry last season. Yes, the Colts could use defensive help but Charles is just too good to pass up here.

St. Louis needs some LB help. They're pretty weak at all three positions, and an upgrade here is more pressing than WR (which they could also use with Isaac Bruce going to San Fran).

So, with the 2nd pick in the 3rd round of the 2008 NFL Draft, the St. Louis Rams select Tavares Gooden, LB, Miami (FL).
