That Bruce, EE, and Votto 3,4,5 could be promising in a couple years.

I thought 3-4 "regulars" had to make each spring training trip. Am I mistaken?

Even so, perhaps that bodes well for Votto, Bruce, and Castro. :)

Its a SS game today, so I'm not sure how the 'rules' apply.

Hey, Castro made the trip. What more do you want?

Was not aware of that. Thanks, J.

I'd really like to see Maloney have a solid outing today, if for no other reason than to give him some confidence when he starts the season in Louisville. I gotta believe he'll be a casualty of the next stage of cuts.

Update on this game from Fay:

Matt Maloney got through the first in Lakeland without giving up a hit or a run.

Bako found the water today. He and Hopper each have a hit in this one, according to the box on MLB.com.

Per Trent, Maloney gave up a pair of dingers and three runs to the Tigers in the second.

BRM

Carlos Guillen and NRI Scott Sizemore hit the homers.

BRM

Castro committed an error. Someone get Raisor a hanky.

it's refreshing to learn that Maloney is not Mr. March, he's Mr. October

I wish EdE and Votto would start swinging hot bats. I have faith in each one's abilities; I wish I felt like the front office and Dusty Baker shared that same faith. :(

A whole lot of nothing going on offensively in Lakeland (a little better than Sarasota though). One run and three hits through five innings. They have drawn five walks though. Clearly walks are killing the offense.

Tom Shearn in to pitch the 5th.

BRM
03-11-2008, 02:53 PM
Shearn gives up a solo shot to Pudge in the 5th. 4-1 Tigers.

BRM
03-11-2008, 03:09 PM
A couple of hits for the Reds in 6th, by Andy Phillips and Juan Castro . They fail to score though and it's still 4-1 Tigers.

BRM
03-11-2008, 03:15 PM
Lots of changes to the Reds lineup. Now in:

Dickerson - CF (K'd in his first AB)
Cabrera - LF
Gutierrez - 1B
A. Phillips - 2B
Hanigan - C
Denove - DH

Coutlangus pitching the 6th.

BRM
03-11-2008, 03:21 PM
Cout pitches a scoreless 6th.

Jay Bruce is 0-3 with 2 strikeouts. EE is 0-2 with a walk. Votto went 0-2 with a walk and a strikeout. His day is done.

BRM
03-11-2008, 03:33 PM
Andy Phillips with an RBI single in the 7th to make it 4-2 Tigers.

More subs,

Heisey - RF
Griffin - 3B (singled and scored)
Rosales - SS

Roenicke on to pitch the 7th.

BRM
03-11-2008, 03:37 PM
Roenicke struck out two and walked one in the 7th. Still 4-2 Tigers.

BRM
03-11-2008, 03:56 PM
Tyler Pelland pitching the 8th. Rosales got a hit in the top of the 8th but that was it for the Reds.

BRM
03-11-2008, 04:00 PM
Pelland gives up a solo shot to Brent Clevlen. He also gave up a walk and struck out one. 5-2 Tigers after eight innings.

BRM
03-11-2008, 04:11 PM
Hanigan had a 2 run double in the 9th to make it 5-4but that's all the Reds could muster. It's final.

Some notables:

Bruce: 0-4
EE: 0-2, 1 BB
Votto: 0-2, 1 BB
Patterson: 1-3
Dickerson: 0-2
Rosales: 1-2
Hopper: 1-2, 1 BB
Griffin: 2-2
Castro: 1-2, 1 BB (I had to include him for Raisor's sake)

Maloney: 2 IP, 3 ER, 3 hits, 1 BB
Burton, Coffey, Coutlangus, and Roenicke each had a scoreless inning.

Anybody wanna lay odds on Roenicke's chances of making the Reds' bullpen out of ST? I always thought it was a long shot given the fact his highest level in the minors is AA, but he's had himself a fine spring so far. We could always use another power arm in the late innings, and Roenicke would certainly provide that.

I'd say about 8 to 1. He certainly hasn't hurt himself this spring.

Without looking at the numbers, it seems to me that Juan is walking alot this spring.

Juan Castro OBP machine.

I worry that he's not being used enough. Sometimes it's not that you get roughed up on the mound, it's that you don't even see the mound. Hopefully he'll get the chance to shine over the next two weeks.

I'm probly showing my baseball history ignorance here, but I don't get it. What's the connection between him and Roenicke?

hard throwing righty reliever that quickly jumped from low A to Reds by virtue of a head-turning spring.

Chip's favorite player.

Well, I guess when you put it that way, the two are kinda similar. And by kinda similar, I mean almost identical.

Like M2 said, hopefully he'll get the chance in the next couple weeks to show off his stuff. With the raving reviews I've read about his lightning fastball, a good long look at him might be all it takes for him to make the team, thus prompting management to jettison some of the chaff we all know the Reds should've gotten rid of long ago.

A little post-game BP for Dusty and his son Darren taking BP on the short back field here -- it ended when Darren send one back up the middle and hit Dusty in a sensative spot.

I'd say Roenicke has no chance of making the team out of ST. Too many guys without options littering up the front yard.

that's not it. there are very few guys without options. In the bullpen, it's just Cordero and Weathers
