In all fairness, batting guys at the top of the lineup in ST can have as much to do about getting them more ABs than any strategic decision. I see 5 guys fighting for a job, followed by 2 guys who already have jobs, followed by 2 guys without a shot.

Random pregame stuff from Trent:

* Talked to the Krivdawg, Capellan is subject to the regular Rule V rules -- for the Reds to keep him, they need to have him on the Major League roster all season. There was a $25,000 fee to claim him.

* Dusty was asked about Johnny Cueto and if the scouting reports had prepared him for what he's seen. "I read (the scouting reports), but I scanned them. I didn't want to be persuaded one way or the other. I scan a lot. I wanted to see it with my own eyes."

What have your eyes told you?
"Same thing yours are telling you."

Also, Cueto and Volquez have both cut their hair.
"He's not Sampson, you know," Baker said.

As far as his expectations for Cueto:
"Just pitch, son, that's all. No pressure, no expectations, just pitch. ... I've got some expectations, I'm just not telling him yet -- that comes later."

Dusty added that later time could be two-to-three years down the line, which means his expectations are probably greater than just a spot int he rotation. He also noted that when he came to Cincinnati, he had several people in other organizations tell him about Cueto and spoke glowingly of him.

R.I.P E.V. and Cueto's hair.

Bill Bray makes an appearance!

* Bottom 5: Bill Bray in. Two pitches to Feliz and he pops up. Bray blew a fastball by Werth on the first pitch. Looked really good. Werth singled up the middle, although it wasn't something he's going to brag to his friends about. Kinda threw his bat at it and went up the middle for a single. Quick work by Bray, keeping my plans intact. Good work. I'm sure he's pretty happy about his first spring training outing being good as well. Redlegs 3, Phillies 1

Bray:

I feel pretty good, all the work we did on my shoulder this off-season and this spring really helped, even when it was hurting, it felt good, that's kind of an oxymoron there, but I always felt strong.

I was just trying to go out there and throw strikes for my first time out there. No pain and throwing strikes were my two goals. I had no pain (and threw 10 of 13 strikes)

Did you feel good just being out there after a run of bad luck?
I don't think anyone can call it bad luck. You're in the big leagues, I can't have but so much bad luck, perhaps a few unfortunate events.

Wasn't that Arroyo's goal this offseason?

My only concern would be if by trying to throw with more velocity, he loses movement. My college coach tried to get me to increase velocity by throwing more over the top verses from 3/4 slot. The primary effect this had was to straighten out my "fastball". (quotation marks essential when you have Mike Flanaganesque veloity) I tried this in one BP session primarily to allow a couple of guys on the team to have a HR hitting contest. Coach never said anything again about it. I haven't seen any tape on Arroyo this spring, hopefully a velocity increase is not at the expense of his natural movement.

Pretty nice job to get out of a jam by a rookie. The next outing by Cueto will go a long way in determing his status with Reds if has not been determined already.
