Pirates

Lineup via Trent:

Today's lineup for the Reds:
Corey Patterson cf
Jeff Keppinger ss
Ken Griffey Jr. rf
Brandon Phillips 2b
Adam Dunn lf
Edwin Encarnacion 3b
Joey Votto 1b
Javier Valentin c
Aaron Harang p

This very well could be your Opening Day lineup.

Other pitchers on the trip:
Bill Bray
Jim Brower
Todd Coffey
Francisco Cordero
Jon Coutlangus
Mike Lincoln
Gary Majewski
Mike Stanton
David Weathers

* Tom Shearn has fans everywhere. Shearn, who was reassigned to minor league camp yesterday, was one of last year's great stories, but I didn't realize it was as great as it is. I saw a car yesterday with the license plate "ILVSHRN" -- I tried to get a picture of it, but I was driving and, well, you couldn't see it.

Man that's a lot of chaff they are still carrying in terms of bullpen arms.

I would be comfortable with that as the Opening Day line-up, by the way.

Looks like the opening day lineup.

Man that's a lot of chaff they are still carrying in terms of bullpen arms.
Is it carrying chaff or is it doing one of the things that ST is designed to do, winnowing the chaff from the wheat?

A scoreless two innings by Brower, let's say, could make him the wheat and Coutlangus not being able to get an out, let's say, could make him the chaff.

The reverse could happen.

Or Coutlangus throwing a perfect inning and Stanton, for example, getting bombed could help management decide the next (LH, in this example) bull pen cut.

Opening day is not tomorrow.

Votto just knocked the snot out of that ball for a double.

I consider Brower chaff, regardless. Lincoln too. A few scoreless innings from either of them won't change my mind on that.

Thom B:

"Why do the Reds play the Pirates so much in the spring?"

Um, just musing here Thom, but is it because their camps are 10 miles from each other? Just a thought.

They'll have better spring competition when they move to Arizona....

Votto 2 for 2 with 2 doubles off a lefty.

That is all.

I was pulled away from the computer for work stuff...how did the Reds get to their five runs? Mostly looking for an idea if anyone in particular had a big hit or two.

Nice to hear on Votto.

With Bako on first, Hopper steps in for Patterson. Bako takes off on an 0-2 pitch and steals 2nd easily as the throw sails into the outfield.

Hopper goes down swining on a 1-2 pitch. Castro now up (for Keppinger) with a runner on 2nd and 2 down.

Screwball
03-21-2008, 02:37 PM
membengal - Javy had a couple of RBIs for the Reds' first two runs (single to right and later a grounder to SS) and last inning Kepp got a single, Griff doubled to left, Phillips doubled down the left field line (scoring Kepp and Griff), and Edwin got a lucky wind-aided bloop to score Phillips.

All kinds of changes in the field...

Gil in left, Hopper at CF, Hairston at RF, Freel at 3rd, Castro at SS, Cabrera at 2nd, Hatt at 1st, Bako at C. Harang stays in to pitch the bottom of the 6th.

OnBaseMachine

Harang induces a grounder from Nigel Morgan. Hatt scoops up the 3 hopper and steps on 1st. 1 down.

Screwball
03-21-2008, 02:44 PM
Another grounder to 1st. Hatt steps on 1st for the 2nd out.

From the way Brantley and Thom are talking, Harang is pitching an absolute gem.

And as I type that, Harang gets an easy fly ball to CF to end the 6th.

Top 7, Reds up 5-0. In steps Hairston against LHP Sean Burnett.

Screwball
03-21-2008, 02:49 PM
With the count full, Hairston takes ball 4. Runner on 1st, nobody out for Jolbert Cabrera.

Screwball
03-21-2008, 02:53 PM
Burnett paying a lot of attention to Hairston. 2-2 count to Cabrera. Cabrera swings and misses on a down and in slider. 1 down.

Screwball
03-21-2008, 02:55 PM
2-0 pitch crushed by Gil, but it's tracked down in CF by Nigel Morgan. Hairston has to retreat to 1st. 2 down, Freel up.

Screwball
03-21-2008, 02:56 PM
Freel lines one to center. Morgan dives to rob Freel of a base knock. Still 5-0 Reds in the middle of the 7th.

Screwball

LaRoche lines a single to CF. 1 on, 1 down.

Brantley and Thom disagreeing about using a roster spot on Stanton. Brantely says he gets a spot because of the contract. Thom wants none of it because Stanton makes the Reds a worse team.

Doumit hits a rocket down the left field line for a double. 2nd and 3rd with 1 down.

It's actually Nyjer Morgan. As far as I can tell he's the only human alive with that name. All other Google returns for Nyjer refer to a type of thistle seed used in bird feeders.

With the runner on 3rd and 1 out, Andy Phillips hits a 1-2 pitch to 2nd. With the infield in, Hatteberg can't come home. 2 down with Hatt still on 3rd.

Screwball

Thom seemingly gushing about how good the Astros could be this year. I have them finishing next to last.

A bloop single to right by another guy. Runners on 1st and 2nd with 2 out.

After two quick outs, Weathers gives up a walk, single, and another walk to load 'em up. Dick Pole comes out for a chat.

Me too, though I'm thinking the Pirates could improve in the 2nd half of the season while the Astros head downhill after their summer firesale.

I'm thinking Roy Oswalt will find himself on the Boston Red Sox before the season ends.

Screwball
03-21-2008, 03:23 PM
Weathers gets Mientkewizc (I have no idea how to spell his name) to ground out weakly. Reds still up 5-1 heading into the top of the 9th.

Cabrera geos down swinging on a 1-2 count. 5-1 heading into the bottom of the 9th. I'm guessing we'll see Cordero.

Screwball
03-21-2008, 03:34 PM
Yep, Francisco Cordero on the mound. I think we'll see quite a bit of today repeated this year. Harang dazzling for 6 innings. Stanton giving up rockets. Weathers a little shaky but getting the job done, and Cordero in to shut the door.

Quickly 0-2 on Gomez. Sounds like Cordero's bringing it.

Broken bat grounder to the left of the mound. Castro charges, picks, and throws to 1st to end the game.

Reds win 5-1!

I have a feeling that Castro will be at SS to end quite a few games this year. As long as Cordero is in a save situation, I think I will be ok with that.
