Today's lineup for the Reds hosting the Twins at Ed Smith Stadium, 1:05 p.m. start:

Corey Patterson, CF
Jeff Keppinger, SS
Ken Griffey Jr., RF
Brandon Phillips, 2B
Adam Dunn, LF
Edwin Encarnacion, 3B
Joey Votto, 1B
David Ross, C
Bronson Arroyo, P

This is the lineup I expect to see on Monday. Would be better with a swap of Votto and Patterson.

Would be better with a swap of Votto and Patterson.

Swap BP and Dunn too.

At least it's pretty much the right people playing, given the likely roster on OD.

Swap BP and Dunn too.
agreed ... I guess there is no chance of either happening.

This team really, really needs a catcher who can hit a little. There's a lot of OBP in the 5-6-7 spots, falling off a cliff.

or just move those high OBP 5-6-7 hitters up in the order.

This does not bode well for Paul Bako's chances of making the club (which is not a bad thing). If David Ross is playing today, then the Reds have made the determination that he is healthy enough to start the season.

Bako is a solid defensive catcher, though. Hopefully, he will accept an assignment to Louisville, and be available to be called up--if needed. But if he doesn't, I think that Ryan Hanigan can fill that role.

flyer85
03-27-2008, 12:08 PM
There is no upside to Bako ... no bat and not all that behind the dish anymore. If they need to go with someone else then have it be someone with some upside.

It is sort of funny when your 1-3-4 are worse hitters than your 5-6-7.

It is sort of funny when your 1-3-4 are worse hitters than your 5-6-7.

At this point do you really think that you'd be able to say that Votto is a better hitter than Griffey or Phillips, or even Patterson for that matter?

Or say that Edwin is a better hitter than Griffey or Phillips?

So now EE and Votto are better hitters than Ken Griffey, Jr. and Brandon Phillips.

Sure.

EE was a better hitter than BP last year too.

Sure.

Didn't you get the memo? a .859 OPS in AAA and a sub .700 OPS against LHP means he's a lock for super stardom. Don't get me wrong, I think he's a good player but tales of his forthcoming exploits are at best premature.

So now EE and Votto are better hitters than Ken Griffey, Jr. and Brandon Phillips.

Sure.

I didn't mean all 3 were better than the other 3. Just that I'd prefer the 2nd pair of guys to the first pair of guys. If I had to pick 3 for 2008, I'd take Dunn, Junior, and EE.

Dunn > Junior
EE > BP
Votto > Patterson

Judging by OPS, I'd put significant cash on all 3 of those.

I like Phillips as a player and I'm glad he's a Red, but he is seriously overrated at the dish at this point. He absolutely destroyed lefties last year, in part due to an unlikely to be sustained BABIP. The lack of discussion about his mediocrity versus righties (.262/.310/.428) is beyond me. Stolen bases are nice, but even at an 80% success rate, that nets out to maybe 2 runs considering that 70% is a 0 run net. But those few extra runs on the bases are more than negated by the double plays he hit in to (3rd most in MLB). Part of his counting number success was due simply opportunity. Give EE another 150 plate appearances and let's compare them again.

Marty's continual "tired old Ed Smith Stadium" has nothing to do with heading back to Cincinnati and EVERYTHING to do with the team moving it's ST facility to Arizona. He's been touting the phrase ever since he and Thom decided that would be the thing to do.

After four weeks and several times per game, the phrase itself has become tired and old.

I'm watching the Tigers/Phillies game on Fox Sports Detroit. The announcers were interiewing Jim Leyland and asked him why he chose to bat Gary Sheffield 3rd in the lineup over Cabrera. His answer was because Sheffield has the highest career OBP in the lineup and he wants to give Cabrera and Ordonez more RBI opportunities. What a smart guy.

Arroyo impressive in final tuneup
Right-hander looking forward to working in healthy rotation
By Mark Sheldon / MLB.com

SARASOTA, Fla. -- Bronson Arroyo rarely flies under the radar, but the Reds pitcher has very quietly had a strong spring.

Arroyo couldn't have had a much better final tuneup than he did Thursday vs. the Twins. Frequently changing speeds with his fastball and mixing in his offspeed stuff, he allowed three hits over seven scoreless innings with six strikeouts and no walks.

Of the 89 pitches Arroyo threw, 65 were for strikes.

"Oh man, he really had it going," manager Dusty Baker said. "He had all his pitches working. That's midseason form right there. The breaking ball was working on command. He had good location with his fastball."

This spring, Arroyo is 2-0 with 1.89 ERA in four starts. In his 19 innings, the right-hander has allowed 12 hits and two walks while striking out 12.

"It's the best I've ever felt in spring by far," Arroyo said. "My body is where it needs to be. My stuff is there and I feel strong. That's the main thing for me, to have a little zip on the fastball and keep guys honest. They know I'll throw a decent amount of breaking balls."

If Arroyo is good in the No. 2 spot behind Aaron Harang, the Reds could have a potent rotation. Last season, Arroyo was 9-15 with a 4.23 ERA in 34 starts. Although he had 22 quality starts and 210 2/3 innings pitched, he also endured a fatigued arm at times and some streaky stretches. In one nine-start run last May and June, Arroyo was 0-7 with a 7.28 ERA.

While Arroyo has gone about his business, Johnny Cueto, Josh Fogg and Edinson Volquez have pitched well and have likely claimed the last three spots in the rotation. Their performances have Arroyo optimistic about this season's starting five.

"The last two years, it's been about trying to get guys healthy. You're not sure who's going to be in the rotation," Arroyo said. "It's going to be fun to not feel like me and Aaron have to carry most of the load. I'm really looking forward to seeing those guys while sitting on the bench and saying 'Wow, look at what these guys are doing.' You want a little competition. Hopefully guys are going out and shoving it every time, and you feel like, 'I better do my part to keep up the pace.'"

I agree 100%.

When I turn the ballgame on I expect the announcers to provide Play By Play. Some small talk is ok but gee whizz.

I want to hear what's happening on the field, Who's pitching? Who's hitting? What's the count? Is anyone on base? How many outs? What inning is it?

I could care less about the announcers golf game, inside jokes, silly gangster or gangsta trivia questions, or The World According To Marty.
