I figured Votto would get the start today. Oh well. Hopefully the day off cleared EE's head and he starts hitting today.

Hopefully the offense carries over its success last night and Harang gives a solid start and picks up his first win of the season. It would be nice to begin this roadtrip with series win in Milwaukee, especially after losing the first game like we did.

Surprised not to see a getaway day line up.

Things I'd love to se tonight:

A couple hits for EE
An errorless game for the Reds
A half dozen or more runs from the offense
A win for Harang

I really think Monday's line-up wasn't a getaway day line-up, it was a trying to find some way to deal with Hamels line-up.

I think so too. Not sure we'll see too many "getaway day" lineups from Dusty.

I continue to shake my head at Dusty batting Phillips clean-up vs. RHP.

Vs. LHP I can completely understand. Vs. RHP is simply inexcusable.

Gonna be a long season with Phillips batting clean-up vs. RHP....

Monday's lineup was simply to get as many right handers in there against Hammels as possible.

As hungry as Dusty Baker seems to be to win, we won't see many Boone/Miley/Narron getaway day specials.

It's becoming obvious Dusty likes set lineups where everyone can know his role -I don't think he'll make many lineup constructions that flop players around based on matchups - at least for non-platoon players.

You'll see it until the Reds get LH hitters who can hit LF pitching.

When the other team has a LOOGY like Shouse, who can make Griffey and Dunn et al look stupid, you need to separate those LH bats, otherwise somewhere in the 7th or 8th inning he'll come in and stop any chance we have of scoring. Phillips at least gives us a chance.

I can understand not having 3 LHB in a row, but I guess I see no problem with 2 LHB in a row.

In a perfect world, Griffey rakes, Phillips rakes, and Dunn rakes against both LHP and RHP, but we won't see that. Phillips struggles vs. RHP, Dunn struggles vs. LHP. Griffey will continue decline due to age.

Honestly, Phillips batting clean-up vs. RHP frustrates me more than Patterson leading off.

Dunn doesn't hit lefties as well as he does righties, but he more than holds his own. He owns a career .240/.360/.481/.841 against them.

Interesting discussion. In reality, I think, both sides of the discussion are confirming my view that the team needs another major righty bat in the lineup.

Yes, Griffey and Dunn at three and four would not be ideal.

Yes, Griffey, Phillips, Dunn against righties is not ideal.

The Reds need one more big righty bat so it can be Griffey (Bruce eventually), Righty bat, Dunn, Phillips. That's a super lineup with the right cleanup hitter.

The Reds need a defensive centerfielder. Hard to get a cleanup hitting catcher.

So the new righty cleanup hitter needs to play first base or third base.

Now hopefully a win today with the players they've got.

Griffey and Dunn get very little to hit in these lineups, with the responsibility of the game going to Phillips/Encarnacion (who isn't getting much either, lately) and the 7/8 hitters.

I think its silly to set your lineup for what "might" happen in the later innings.
Most games are won or lost in the first six.

I hate the idea of planning your lineup for late innings while ignoring innings 1-6. If the Reds score more runs against the starter maybe it won't matter. Case in point was the Suppan start: the lefties did a great job of getting on base via hit or walk while the righties did nothing but make outs. Maybe, just maybe, if the lefties were stacked the Reds manage a few more runs and win that game.

I agree with Baker's approach. Don't bunch up the lefty hitters.

Problem is the performance of many of the righty hitters. Reds just have a weakness there.

OBM, you are quick to point out the continual 0-2 'gifts' that seem to be given by Reds pitchers. Guys like Harang have too good of stuff to be leaving 0-2 in a sweet spot for the opposition.
