I looked at Lee's 3 year splits and lefties actually hit him better (this year being the exception, but nobody's hitting him), so I'm a little surprised not to see Votto or Hatteberg out there.

Surprisingly, I don't find much to argue with. Janish in the 2 spot is bonkers but Valentin against Lee doesn't bother me much. Votto can pinch hit later if needed. Andy Phillips would look a lot better in Javy's spot though. Just saying.

Pregame today on TV: Dusty said he had Dunn bunting to avoid the double play. Welch said something like Dunn might be more likely to homer than bunt well. Dusty sorta huffed, and then said something like well he was more likely to hit into a DP than homer.

Truth is that Dunn hit into 12 DPs last year while homering 40 times. This year he has hit into 2 DPs, while hitting 9 dingers. Once again, Dusty needs to brush off his stat sheet and his calculator. (If he has either...) Dunn is 4 times more likely to homer than hit into a double play. .

C'mon. Decisions shouldn't be based on reality.

Center Fielders lead off.

Shortstops hit 2nd.

Lefty pitches are tough on lefty hitters.

These are absolute truths. Don't fight it.

Glad Dusty let Phillips swing 3 and 0 there. If Phillips walks there, the bags are full but you have a hot pitcher on the mound. Phillips ahead in the count against the lefty has a high probability of knocking in the run.

I know this is anti "avoid outs at all costs" and reasonable people could disagree, but I'm glad to have the run on the board.

Yep. Griffey is killing this team because he's slow and not hitting (and he's old and makes a lot of money), but Freel blunders like that and the fans cheer his "effort" I guess the trick is to always look like you're on fire whether or not it's intelligent to do so.

I'd rather have a few errors caused by over aggressiveness than what I'm seeing from Griff these days. I'm starting to think that the way to handle Griff right now is to rest him far more often. Today, Hairston is on the bench. He's been hot, and is righty against the lefty pitcher.

Stupid managing comes back to bite the Reds.

An inferior defensive catcher makes a poor play to allow a runner to steal a base that Bako would've had him on.

Pitching to the team's RBI leader instead of walking him to pitch to an AL pitcher.

Volquez needs to get this walks problem figured out, because it's frustrating to watch him lose command for an AB.

I'll keep is quick-- I know we're trying to keep gamethreads on track, but you asked, right? :)

I wish I was more confident. I just don't see why the homecourt dominance will end today. I don't see a blowout, but I see Boston shooting the ball fairly well and LBJ trying to keep pace. I think he'll play well, but not brilliantly, and his teammates probably won't be able to make up for it.

Celtics 90, Cavs 83. I very much hope I am wrong.

People said the same thing about Griffey last year after a slow start. then he went on a tear. He's not young any more, but he will start to hit.

JR might pick up against pitchers with 7 ERA's, but IMHO he simply looks like has slowed so much with the bat that he has HUGE holes in his swing now.
I doubt if even last year many pitchers dared throw at JR's hands. JR was just so quick inside that he would turn on those.

This year, I have seen JR throw inside many times, and he is an easy out.

Anyway, no matter when JR might get hot, to bat him 3rd right now is just dumb. If he heats up later (alal Dunn), move him up, but now move him down.

I think Law is exaggerating, but there might be some truth to the claim that Volquez gains value in the NL. In any case, I expect his ERA to rise above 3.00 pretty soon... he can't maintain his current strand rate (90%) for a whole season.
