Edwin Encarnacion is getting a day off. He's 9-for-53 over his last 14 games with only four RBI.

A day off will help Edwin.

It will be a HUGE mistake to just let Adam Dunn walk.

I say negotiate a deal RIGHT NOW, as IMO he's on the verge of going on a tear.

Last four years (heading into 2008):

Age 24-27

42 HR
100 RBI
.254 AVG

.920 OPS

At 28, he is in his prime. I have been telling everyone I know that has been down on him so far, that he will probably have a career year. I still stand by my prediction of 47 HR, 110 RBI and a .940 OPS.

I guess I don't get this. Hairston hasn't had an error since he took over at shortstop. He has swung the bat well and played decently enough in the field in an unfamiliar position. Why is it so unreasonable for Dusty to play him?

Dusty probably didn't want to play Janish against a good veteran pitcher like Penny. He doesn't have that many choices with injuries to his starter and backup.

Too bad Hairston made an error, he had time to get in better position. He rushed the throw. But I think Dusty deserves a little more credit. His team has won six in a row, he must know something.

Hey, you've never seen me diss Patterson. I like Patterson.

But I'm not ready to call this team on fire or even aggressive yet. The past several days they're merely (and barely) making up for the underperformance they've thrown out there for much of the season. I predict that within a couple of weeks it will even out and then we'll start to see what this team is really made of. I don't know what that is yet. That doesn't mean I'm overly pessmistic or grumpy or statastic or not a true fan. It means that I see this as a team whose players and manager have yet to prove to me that they've got any real mojo going. Or intelligence. Or creativity. I'd love to see them prove it to me. They do have talent.

I wouldn't say never, ever.

You are right that you shouldn't try unless your chances are at least 95%. But if you want zero outs at third, you would probably hold up many, many times where you could easly make it.

There's lots of runs that score from third with 2 outs that don't score from first. Getting to third has some value, and to say you should never try is, IMO, just too cautious.
