Here's how I look at it: We don't really have a 5th starter. So, IMO, you should just go down the line, giving different guy's a crack at it. If they do OK, keep them there until they falter, and then try someone else.

I had no problem giving Fogg the first look. He stunk, so we tried Belisle. He was bad too.

But why then go BACK to Fogg? Just keep the line moving and try someone else.

Stupid.

Dusty is handling this correctly. Fogg is a weak starter but every inning he gets through saves the pen. I'm sure Fogg will be lifted -- no pun intended -- if there is more trouble. If Dusty had another Fogg or Belisle in the pen, it would be no improvement.

I'm sure the Reds will have a new fifth starter very soon. Walt is just waiting to be sure Maloney is ready. Maloney started off poorly this year, has recently been good, I'm sure Walt is just making sure he's ready to go.

IMo, he's a better middle guy than the Reds usually enjoy, in that he can expect to be around league average, and a tough match-up... he's got a different type of repetoire than most lefties.

But his stuff is somewhat limited, and miscast as the set-up role he's been used in this year. Not a long term option, but a fine one year deal that provided an upgrade on our current roster. But mainly because of his control problems, it's hard to be particularly excited about him.

I would rather see him get the call up over Maloney or Thompson because he has some MLB experience, and if we can live with Cueto struggling to learn, and the Fogg/Belisle experiment, I don’t see how Bailey would not fit into letting him finish out the year at this level to do a Cueto/Belisle effort to see what comes and if the additional experience would help Bailey vs. Fogg starting.

Bailey has had his ups and downs at AAA and maybe some attitude, maybe not.

The difference between Bailey and Cueto is, I think Cueto would just dominate hitters in AAA. I don't think he has anything to learn down there.

Homer has a lot to work on.

Jurrjens came to the Braves at a costly price Edgar Renteria.

Doug getting some love from Trent.

Speaking of Doug Gray, he's right on top of things. Saw it on his site and then tried to confirm with Rob Butcher -- he didn't know -- that Josh Roenicke has been promoted to Class AAA and Sean Watson took his spot as a reliever in Class AA. As someone pointed out, they're both on the rosters online of their respective new teams, so that's a good sign. Doug's on it as always. That's just another reason I make sure I subscribe to Doug's site on RSS -- now if I could just get RSS for this site... 1-2-3 for Jurrjens. Perhaps the sun is now in the tough spot to see, not earlier.

Yeah, but Escobar is just as good, and younger...

Blanco walks. Another batter walks after being behind in the count.

This is why Affeldt's not all that. Walking the 7-8 hitters.

True both Cueto and Homer have a lot of work to do.

But, if they toss someone into the wolves den, Bailey might be better for that than risking bringing up Thompson or Maloney too early or before they are ready and risk messing them up.

Affeldt has a reputation as a multi-inning guy because of his starter trial this spring, but he's a 1 inning lefty IMO. In that role he's a fine guy for the pen. He's not a closer, not an inning eating horse, but a decent lefty bridge in the middle to late innings. Use him that way and he's fine. He loses his effectiveness after 20 pitches or so IMO.

That's the difference between the Reds and Braves; the Braves routinely find capable starters, while the Reds fill the back end of their rotations with overpromoted kids and the worst of the wash-ups.

Jurgens wasn't that hard to find when you have a primo SS to trade.

Maloney is older and more ready than Homer. Just because somebody let a high school kid take the bar exam, it doesn't make him more ready for it than a law school grad. Just don't expect him to be Perry Mason on day 1.

Primo, maybe, but not cheap. Part of being a good GM is turning your expensive helpful bits (ehem Arroyo) into young helpful bits.

While I understand what you're saying, I don't think you could get that kind of talent for Arroyo.
