I can't bring myself to attend a game out of sheer spite. My soul isn't that dead quite yet.

I'm seeing the Reds at Yankee Stadium in a week. I'd rather be torn with joy than turned blindly against what at its heart is just another baseball team. Albeit a team made of evil.

Oakland Athletics in a trade for ??? He was an afterthought who became a pretty good pitcher. Raised on the west coast (San Diego, i believe) and considered a kid who just wasn't going to do much by his former organization.

He was part of the Jose Guillen deal. Joe Valentine was considered the centerpiece, but Harang was the most Major League ready. Of course Valentine flamed out, a 98 mph fastball only has value if you can control it, which he couldn't, but Harang for two months of Jose Guillen is highway robbery. There was another minor leaguer involved, but it wasn't anyone who became anything.

Edit: I found the third player, it was Jeff Bruksch, a pitcher who appears to be out of baseball now.

this is a pretty good board. i sometimes think many on here get disgusted with the negativity and think it's bad. What do they expect? WE haven't had a winning record since 2000, so how can everyone be positive? It's just so strange to believe that a fan base can think positive all the time with what has been going on with this club for 8 straight years. Better people can, but I'm not in that group. Call me sinful if you want.

OTOH, the Red Sox fans have just won a World Series and the negativity is worse there than here. And we want to design this site like theirs and be like them? God have mercy.

While I agree it isn't the best GT (still pretty good IMO), I completely disagree with your (and BuckeyeRedleg's) take on their site. Read some of their "Red Sox Discussion" threads and you'll see why they're considered the premier website for baseball discussion, and has actually prompted some well-known baseball people to post there.

I think Redszone is up there with them, but we aren't quite there yet. We do have several exceptional posters however.

I believe that you would see a lot more of the exceptional posters and post if the Reds had a quality product to write about like Boston does and has for some time now. Even the sports talk shows and the beat writers and their columns that follow the Reds are lacking from what once was good and they are professionals.

I think that's a great point. Back when the Reds were losing all the time in April this site, IMO, was borderline unreadable. However I've noticed a positive trend over the past month and a half or so when they've been playing better than .500 ball. This might sound absurd, but I really think the posting quality on this site is directly correlated with how well the team does.

It’s not easy to come up with something fresh, new and stimulating to the readers or to inspire exchange when the subject matter is basically the same as it has been for the past six-seven-eight years running, and has already been habitually covered and re-addressed in part or whole. Of course when new material such as a Jay Bruce and his impressive start, or encouraging moves in the minors come from players developing and doing well, the team inspires the group with a six game wining streak, even Jocketty moving what is perceived as a thorn or deadwood in the teams side, and other material that comes from events, issues or changes in the positive direction, brings something fresh to write and to discuss.

Teams can have apathy, I think that people who are exceptional writers and communicators as those that you have spoken to can also have an apathy toward spending their time and efforts communicating about a problem franchise that they have already covered over 5-7 year period.

Now granted it is no revelation to know that many people are outstanding communicators and writers, compared to say, myself and others, and those outstanding communicators, make a world of difference, in a venue that is reading intensive for interest and enjoyment.

But to continuously write positives about a negative team with a history of losing, which indicates in most circles that it is a poor or bad product, to write positives habitually regarding them would be a bit pretentious and sorely lacking in credibility somewhere and would insult the reading publics intelligence, wouldn’t it?

Even I though grow tired of participating in and reading chronic bashing of a Baker, Patterson, Dunn, Griffey, Edwin Encacarncions throwing errors and batting slumps, the pitching, the owner, the pitching coach, the defensive errors, a long list of chronic negatives that happen with a bad sports team.

So no, I don’t blame the people, I blame the subject matter and the poor product.

I understand your point. I think it's a decent one, but I vehemently disagree. Forgive me for being frank here, but you are making way too many excuses for people "venting" (which the site admins. explicitly don't want). How the team does should NOT change the quality here. I remember reading mountains of posts back in April about how this team was "Bob Boone bad" and would be "lucky to win 70 games", etc. It got old real quick, and not just because it was patently wrong.

There's a (several) very good reason(s) why the site administrators had to shut down the game threads for a month, and it wasn't simply due to personal attacks - although those had become a problem. My own speculation was that the venom spewed because of the losing pretty much made the site suffer, and the GTs was said venom's grandest scale. If we want to be this higher level of discourse where we actually vote whether or not to let people join us, then we damn well better be able to back it up in the backbone of any website - the game threads.

Should we criticize? Of course. Nobody's saying they shouldn't. But to bring the level of discussion down because the team is losing (BTW, I don't care how long it's been) is unacceptable. Maybe this is a bit who the hell cares, but I want us to be the board anybody looks for when wanting to read/talk about baseball.

Anyway, sorry for the long rant. It wasn't meant to be directed towards you SF, as I think you're a fine, fine poster. I more just wanted to get this off my chest, and hey, since this is a game thread...

No problem. Different stimuli effects different people differently though and each reacts differently. Stimulus, stimulus reponse. I have been watching the front board for several days now, and I think that I see a posting apathy at work. There is a reason when they bring out the past, and history of the game, I think that they have exhausted the present.

C'mon BR. Sure, their GTs are laced with profanities (the horror!), but as I said earlier, we're all adults, so what's the big deal?

And yes, their GT wasn't chock-full of analysis and exceptional insight, but I found it to be a very informative look from an outsiders' perspective. Are you really telling me you read that and took nothing away from it besides "venting"?

What does this board have to do to be more like SOSH?

I say win two World Championships in four years would be a good start. Then we could feel all good about ourselves.
