This is a really good lineup, even the defense is about as good as you can align it with the players available.

I find it quite funny that Dusty's severe aversion to stacking lefties has finally resulted in his putting Adam Dunn higher in the lineup. I won't complain.

It may be the single best line-up dusty has run out all year.

I'd have to agree with that. The one and only beef I've got with it is Phillips in the cleanup role. He's been successful at it this year, but he approaches his at bats differently in that spot. He seems to swing for the fences more. But considering the lineup's we've seen this year...that's nitpicking. :O)

Win or lose tonight, the biggest thing I want to see is a return to the Aaron Harang of old. Something's GOT to turn around for the guy.

K on Sanchez leading off is the RIGHT way to start. :O)

And while I'm at it, I'll also give Dusty credit with the lineup. This is likely the best team the Reds can field against a southpaw, and the order is pretty solid as well.

Kudos, Dusty. Don't let this be a one time thing now.

I don't like BP's approach either. But the way he hits lefties, this year and for his career, any lower than 4th against one would be a crime.

_Sir_Charles_
06-30-2008, 07:24 PM
Thom is praising Dunn's glove work last night. I can't disagree. He looked really good with the leather last night.

RedsManRick

RedlegJake
06-30-2008, 07:26 PM
With Hairston starting Reds are 18-12. Listening to WLW the other night one of the guys, can't remember which, commented that Hairston is simply an all round better hitter when he's leading off because he is conscious of his job leading off and hits the way he's best suited for. When he hits lower in the order he begins to overswing and tries to power up. All I know is that Hairston has shown me he's a pretty good player. You look at his career numbers and wonder what went wrong because he looks a heckuva lot more talented than his record indicates. Maybe the health thing has some truth to it in his case.

_Sir_Charles_
06-30-2008, 07:26 PM

_Sir_Charles_
06-30-2008, 07:28 PM
There's just no excuse for that. The lack of fundamentals and execution is just pitiful. Votto grounds out to 2nd.

That's not a good job by the pitcher, that's a poor job by the Reds coaching staff for not focusing on the fundamentals. I seem to recall Dusty preaching about those to the media during ST. Shame we haven't acutally seen any.

RedlegJake
06-30-2008, 07:28 PM

No right handed (dependable) hitting in the middle of the order. Once Hairston and Kepp got on base, you had Dunn, Phillips and Votto. Dunn has trouble with lefties, Phillips just hacks at the first pitch nearly every time and Votto looked helpless against the lefty. Roster moves, please.

OnBaseMachine

OBP for RH batters so far(including Harang):5 for 11 (four hits one walk)

OBP for LH batters so far: 0 for 6.

So of course all four LOB were RH htters.

This happened the other day in Cleveland. Alternating these guys against lefties is not working. We just don't gain much by speading out the lefties late in the game to make it worth the lack of production this gives us.

I say the problem is Jacoby. Isn't it HIS job to get the hitters mindset in the right place. He's supposed to be teaching plate discipline. When you see a starter getting a free-ride in terms of pitchcount, the coaching staff HAS to step up and tell the hitters to go up there with a patient approach. Not hack at the first pitch.

I don't think anybody expected Jay to hit like he did his first few weeks. .280 with some pop and a good glove. I'll take that over anything else we've got. And remember, that's a .280 in a slump. He's got too much talent to slump forever. The thing I like is that even when he's slumping, he's still being productive...be it with the timely hit, walk or his glove. He's the LEAST of the Reds' worries.

Having followed Bruce's record in the minors, he broke in at some levels this way. Initial hot streak, followed by a slump, then gradually he came back and soon was over .300 and climbing. I think it is a natural way for a rookie to break in. Pitchers adjust then the batter must adjust.

There are very good signs, though. He had a sac fly this weekend on a two strike pitch against a lefty. He made contact to knock in the run against the lefty in the last inning of this game. Lots of guys lefty/lefty would have K'd in those spots.

I think Bruce will be a big time hitter and will turn it around this year and finish on a high note.

I'm not sure "complaining" is the right word here. Although he's hitting .280 for the season, he's only at .230 for the month of June. On top of that, his ops is .630 this month...big difference.

I agree completely. But this is exactly the time for Jacoby to step in and settle the kid down. Yes he's proven he CAN hit MLB pitching. He just doesn't have to do it on the first pitch every time. It just doesn't seem like anybody has stepped forward to reel the kid in and bring him down to earth. Right now his problem is confidence...and it's affecting his approach at the plate. He's pressing. Good coaching steps in. We don't have that though.

Great job by Ross to back up the play.

Regarding the offense.

Remember when you cautioned me on random, chance and small samples?

I believe that we might see a good example of what you were telling me tonight, even though Baker made some very good decisions in making out his lineup tonight for personnel usage.

I sometimes get the feeling that Baker hates the idea of small ball and wants to play for the big inning instead. Problem with that is that the Reds tend to turn a "big inning" into a "no runs scored" inning. What's it take to get them to teach execution. These players ARE capable of it...I'm sure of it.
