Damnit. Dunn flies out to the wall in CF.

I think a lot of GMs would say that the last AB is the kind of hitting that makes Dunn unappealing to them. Long fly out on a home run type swing when a single or double would do.

Not a knock on Adam, just what makes a lot of GMs hesitant on Dunn. Tough inning for the Reds.

CTA513

It would have been nice if the Ump didn't blow the call at 1st earlier in the inning.

It was a ball. Hairston read the pitch correctly and the umpire blew the call. I don't buy the whole "protect the plate" business. That leads to a lot of chasing pitches in the dirt.

Never has anyone gotten more love from Reds country for doing so little than Bill Bray. WHIP of 1.42? His "success" is an illusion. Yeah, his ERA is 2.77, but that is not a telling stat. I wish I could find the statistics for inherited runners. Bill Bray is yet to really show me anything.

Burton is on pace for ~80 IP this year. Do you really need him to protect a 3 run lead against this lineup?

Probably yes. I was thinking that Lincoln for one might be ok here, or possibly Bray, but it's only a three run lead and the middle of the Nats order is up. So it's ok to use Burton here, but he should be off limits tomorrow.

One on, one out.

For every post of too much Burton...there would be 5 more with why Lincoln or Affeldt. This bullpen needs more reliable pitchers.

Agree. The Reds need at least one more guy who is reliable in the eighth inning so it's not always Burton. Right now, there isn't anyone. Roenicke will hopefully be that guy.

And see, I look at it the other way. Bray or Burton in the 7th, Hererra in the 8th then Cordero in the 9th. Hererra is the perfect foil to the hard throwers surrounding him. That change of pace would only make Cordero look that much nastier.

Now if Cueto or Volquez were starting, I'd come straight in with Danny and then go to the cannons.

And Dusty does the dumb move again. Predictable. Patterson in to run for Dunn.

I don't mind Patterson coming in to run...but it should be for Griffey...not Dunn.

3 steals, 3 caught stealing. Not exactly a great percentage. Of course part of that falls on the shoulders of the people who choose to send him at the wrong times.

Problem is that hitters will eventually catch on to Herrera. Once they adjust to him and understand what's coming, he'll have some troubles. I just can't see exposing him night after night in the eighth inning.

I see Herrera as a lefty to be spotted at different points in the game against one or two hitters.

No way I would take Burton out of the eighth, unless he ultimately becomes the closer.

As for Bray, I don't think he is sufficiently reliable for the eighth. Perhaps his best role is as a sixth-seventh inning guy. I would like to see the Reds occasionally using Bray for two innings, since he has shown in the past that he can handle that.

Overall, next year, I wouldn't mind Roenicke, Bray, Burton and Cordero as the 7th-9th inning guys. I wouldn't mind Lincoln and Herrera competing for other spots. I would like to see another workhorse type for the middle innings, someone who can handle a heavy workload.

See Dunn/EE being told to bunt and Ken Griffey Jr not being subject to defensive replacement --- actual skill is second to Dusty's imagination.

I shouldn't have stated it the way I did. I just mean that he should be up here to break up the cannons. I prefer Burton in the 8th and Cordero in the 9th. And yes, short stints for Hererra would be best.

Once again, the Reds get 7 hits and three members of the starting lineup aren't even hitting .250 (Griffey at .239, Dunn at .227, and Bako at .221 with Patterson not starting, but at .188). We once again win on a home run by Junior and do little else.

I hope Walt is searching for hitting. I really do.
