Maybe I'm wrong, but I sensed (from the tv picture) that Dusty had some words with Hairston after that at bat. Could the Reds have taken the bunt sign off and Hairston not picked it up? Again, I could be wrong, just the way it looked from the tv picture inside the dugout.

I agree. Three in a row shouldn't be this much of a problem. But it seems to be. And, of course, Coco is probably now out tomorrow, so it's a double whammy. Blown save tonight, unavailable tomorrow.

If I were Dusty I would not use Burton in this game unless absolutely necessary. Let Burton be available to close tomorrow, maybe even go two innings.

If it goes extras tonight, I'd use Bray or Affeldt, even if the hitters are right handed. Maybe even Maj.

Pitching 1 inning 3 days in a row isn't even close to what a starter does...so yeah seems dumb.

It's harder to have to warm up every night, and come in for high pressure situations. This is Coco's 6th outing since June 28th. That is a lot of pitches, when you count warming up every time.

In any event, Dusty should be learning not to use him in one runs games when he has pitched two days in a row. Cordero now has 4 blown saves, and three of them were when working three straight days.

Also, in the 'lets bash Dusty' mode, I wondered even last night why Dusty didn't rest Cordero with a three run lead in the 9th.

Boy, Bruce is a sucker for those balls in the dirt. That's not good.

Let's just make believe Bruce got the bunt down. Same situation. Now Acta will make a pitching change as the tension builds.

I'm still baffled by that attempted bunt by Bruce. He's NEVER done it successfully. Unless Dusty has seen him do it well a BUNCH in batting practice...that's not the right call. You don't work on things at that stage of the game.

But that being said...Bruce and Votto SHOULD know how to bunt well. Period.

Phillips singles to left. Throw home goes past the catcher. Reds win 3-2!!! :beerme: Reds 3rd win in a row and they will go for the sweep tomorrow. Tonight's win moves the Reds up to 4th place.

Hairston would have been out by a mile at home if not for the Nats miscue on the throw home.

Phillips is playing great baseball in recent weeks.

Boy did I ever get home at the right time. :D

Shame Josh didn't get the W. Cordero certainly didn't deserve it.

Phillips is 'clutch' again tonight.

But don't overlook the part played by Jerry Hairston Jr. He was 3 for 4, and scored two of the Reds three runs.

They have shown a cool graphic on TV the last few games; Hairston is darn near leading the league in OBP for a lead-off hitter. That is why the Reds are SO much better when he plays. His OBP is double what Patterson's was in the #1 hole. Lineups DO matter....

I think hairston hurt himself....and I do not think he should have been sent....the ball got to the OF fast and he seemed to be playing or got a great jump.

I don't know if that's extreme confidence in JH speed...or lack of confidence in AD ability to bring in one run.

Well that was fun! Probably one of the most enjoyable games all year, IMO!

Wouldn't it be nice to play Washington every day? :)

It's still a concern to me that we continue to not score runs. Many will say we scored enough to win, but we are facing what is close to the worst pitching staff in the National League and we still struggle.

Oh well, a win is a win.

I know I know ifs and buts don't count.

BUT...if the Reds had just 2 more wins, the only teams in the NL with more wins than them would be the Phils,Cubs,Cards, and Brew. Just a thought as I looked at the standings tonight.
