RedlegJake

Volquez should have a big day against this lineup hopefully. I am hoping the Reds can handle this kid Balester. He is a hard thrower and new to the league, the Reds do well against fastballers but they make rookies look like Cy Young reincarnate.

Anybody have a problem with Webb being the NL starter for the ASG? Just curious.

Sure, Edinson & Lincecum both have solid cases too. I was just wondering if anybody really questions that choice. I, personally, would've been fine with any of those 3.

You know.....if this team cannot score more than 3 runs against this guy...I am going to agree that Jacoby might just have to be let go. I always favor blaming the players more than the coach.....but this offense should not be this putrid.

JH would have been better off having that be a line drive...beacuse if it does not go out....balls do not find gaps here...unless you have Greg Luzinski in the OF.

07-06-2008, 02:01 PM
Doesn't matter. If you aren't getting the call and keep throwing the same location that's lack of command. He has to bring it into the ump's zone.

A lack of command is to miss the zone by an inch or two? I don't think so. He's hitting Ross' mitt. This is the smallest zone I've seen all year. And not just for Edinson, he's doing it to the Nats pitcher too. I mean if your zone is a 1 foot square you're forcing the pitchers to throw it right down the gut. That's unfair.

I'm not sure if anybody's mentioned it before or not, but I hate our catchers. None of them ever present a target. They keep their gloves down until the pitch is on the way. That's horrible technique...and bad coaching not to correct it. If you're tossing up your glove at the last minute how can you frame pitches consistantly and help out your pitcher by stealing close pitches? Horrible.

Umpire or no umpire, Volquez doesn't look good today.

And the Reds are phoning it in at the plate.

Moaning about the umps is a loser's mentality. They are what they are. When they're tight like this you adjust or lose. Here's the point so far. The Nats hitters are laying off the outside corner because the ump ain't calling it. Volquez kept throwing it there. Balester isn't throwing there much at all and the Reds hitters aren't laying off it when he does. That's working what you're given. The Reds aren't doing it.

That might be the first time that Cy Young and Jimmie Haynes were used in the same sentence

Good hitting there.....1st strike was a tough pitch...2nd pitch was another...as Tommy Davis would say from Ball Four...well i cannot say what he called it, so never mind.

He waited him out and got a perfect pitch for Dunn to hit.

No, you're not complaining too much. He IS bad. A small zone is one thing, but a small INCONSISTANT zone is another. That first pitch to Kearns is a good example. That same pitch, same location...it was a strike to another batter.

The bigger problem is the fact that the Reds hitters aren't adjusting to it like the Nat's hitters have. We're still reaching for pitches.

Absolutely. I'm not saying the ump is good but he is what he is and if you don't adjust to him you're in for a long night. And - he's been bad both ways so the team that adjusts has an edge.

It really has been a case of missed opportunities for the team this year. They've gotten plenty of breaks, but seldom make their own, and quite often give breaks to the other team with their poor baserunning and fielding.
