I guess you could say the same thing about many of the reds players since Coors is no longer the hitters park that GAB is...

walk the leadoff
good throw gets Tavaras
no throw on Holliday steal
EV sleeping on coverage play
Dunn's ball catchable (I'm not watching, Marty hinted it may have been)

That's 5 potential unforced errors alone in the 1st inning. Just unreal.

no way that ball is caught by Dunn.... Notice I said by Dunn... it would've taken an unreal jump and some speed after that... I know i'm not there, but considering how hard that ball was hit and how quickly it got out there I seriously doubt it was catchable, unless you have Patterson out there... lol

I have yet to see a pitcher who didn't have a rough patch somewhere in the season...maybe Bob Gibson in '68, but that was so freaky it caused them to lower the mound. Anyway, Edinson Volquez is no exception...he hasn't suddenly turned to crap, he's just having a rough patch. It's amazing that a guy that young went half a season without any glitches. Let's not act like Volquez is an established ML pitcher who is just "going through a rough stretch." While that's possible and no one is freaking out, it's also just as possible he'll never be a consistent starter...but no reason yet to think that's the case...stuff is too good. Of course, that didn't diminish his 13 complete game shutouts... As I recall they didn't have much offense that year...I'm not sure any team had much offense that year, which I guess is the real reason they lowered the mound. It was scary to watch that dude pitch...he always looked like he was gonna come right off the mound and tackle the hitter if he managed to put wood on the ball. Here's an important question IMO. If the Reds are out of contention...say, in a month or so...will they have the cajones to shut down Volquez & Cueto for the year? Those 2 have thrown a ton of pitches this year (including winter ball & ST). They've never come anywhere close to these sort of innings before.

Or heck, even if we're NOT out of contention. This is our future we're talking about.

I don't know about that. One of my greatest fears is usually that Corey PAtterson will come off the bench and stay in the game. :p:

Cook has been very fortunate tonight. Lots of line drives.
Yea, somebody tell Kepp to take some pitches. First pitch lines out...1 out.:(

Junior triples and locks up my Gameday software. They couldn't believe it either I guess. One out and a man on third for BPhil.

Phillips HBP...some debate about whether it hit him though.

and they failed to score, not that should surprise anyone. I can't stand this offense.

DANG! Dunn pops out to the first baseman and EE makes the third out. After 6 complete it's Rocks 5 - Reds 1

This has been so typical of the "heart" of this batting order - we get a guy on 3rd (scoring position) w/ one out and they can't even get that one run in. Geez!

This game is unraveling *exactly* as I predicted. Maybe the Reds shouldn't trade Arroyo to an NL team--they'd have to face another slop-throwing righty.

5-1 end of 6.

But in the Scrappy-ness Index Dunn actually gets a +1 for that AB. While he didn't drive the run in, he did hit the ball to the left side and he cursed loudly while throwing his bat in an angry manner. So, there's that.

5-1 going to the bottom of the 7th. This could be the inning. :D

I'm thinking Votto could use a day or nine off.

Not worried about Volquez; am worried about Votto and Bruce.

After 7 complete the score remains Rocks 5 - Reds 1. Cook has thrown 88 pitches so far...the Reds seem to have given up on working the count to their advantage. Bill Bray on to pitch the 8th.

Bill Bray in to drive the final nail in the coffin.

Everyone, including th epitcher gets a hit off Bray this inning. Rocks 6-1, men on 2nd and 3rd w/one out for Baker...

not a bad recovery though.
He strikes out Baker, intentionally walks Holliday to load them up and strikes out Hawpe on three consecutive swinging strikes after a first pitch ball.

After 8 and a half, it's Rocks 6 - Reds 1

Hopefully Reds brass can take a bit of note with what a superior defense can do for you.

I'm thinking Votto could use a day or nine off.

Not worried about Volquez; am worried about Votto and Bruce.Bruce getting a taste of how tough the transition to the majors can be once they find your weakness. A huge drop from his AAA numbers and he has no business batting leadoff.

The Reds have a lineup of hackers and it is going to be a huge problem moving forward if there 2 most patient hitters are gone.

Sad to say, but I'm glad I fell asleep after Junior hit the triple and Brandon was awarded first and Dunn and Ecarnacion failed to even get a run in. This team is the most boring team to watch at times. Like flyer85 says, this is a team of hackers and minus our corner outfielders (even though Junior is nearing 40), this team will be worse than bad offensively. Bruce and Votto are showing how difficult it is to hit in the majors and the guy who everyone says will hit no matter what is having a rough time.

The Reds had better think long and hard about letting Dunn go. And they sure as heck better not trade Arroyo. Just sayin'
