They're not going to trade for the sake of trading (salary dump)....they're going to trade if they feel it's the right deal for them. With them having a ton of free agents to be, they don't HAVE to salary dump...they can wait until the end of the year to rework the budget.

NJReds

It's easy to complain about the Reds' pitching, but these guys are throwing with the worst defense in the league behind them, and in a bandbox. That has to put a strain on the pitchers.

Matt700wlw
07-26-2008, 08:41 PM
Fogg and Belisle are what they are....Bailey is still young and can develop.

I let him keep pitching in the rotation for the big club. He's looked a lot more comfortable this time around - however, I'm not really sure what you do when Harang comes back...

Both dead on. People are complaining about our pitching this year and Reds fans need to step back and look at things from a history standpoint. This is BY FAR the best pitching staff we've had in a long, LONG time. Pen & starters. Their numbers don't look it...but in this stadium and with this porous defense...who can blame them. They'll be fine. Our concerns should be our offense and defense...not the pitchers.

I'm not saying we should start Belisle or Fogg over Bailey. He's cheap and young. I just don't see a high ceiling. What's he going to do that will make him much more effective? Even if he gets his command, he doesn't have great velocity and doesn't have great movement. Sure, he could be a Jeff Suppan type #4 innings eater.

It's more of a comment about his hype. I simply don't understand how this guy was considered one of the type prospects in the game. What did people see in him? What's changed? Was he really throwing mid 90's on his fastball? Did his curve have bite? Could he avoid spinning it ever other time?

_Sir_Charles_

Ross has been playing somewhat better lately, but he's still unacceptable as a starter....all three of them are. I certainly don't see any of them getting marginally better, so I think it's time to give Hannigan a shot and lose some of the dead weight on our roster. 3 catchers is ridiculous. I could understand it early in the season when there were injury problems (Ross). But 3 catchers all season long? That's just stupid.

I guess I'm going to be the lone supporter of Homer here. Yes, he had a bad night. One bad game does not make or break a pitcher or a career. He's got nice speed on his FB, he's got nice break on his breaking ball. I don't see him as a top of the rotation guy, but since he's been called up, he's been very good. With tonight as an exception. And don't forget, the Rockies are playing great ball right now and have some great hitters.

This season is over (and it has been since it began for the most part), keep Homer up here and let him take his lumps. He'll be better for it and for us in the long run.

Homer now with only 39 K's in 74 career innings.

That ain't cutting it.

I know he's still young and it's relatively early in his career, but I have little hope in him amounting to anything.

A move to the bullpen may be in order.

Standing pat now doesn't mean anything....they have 13 or so free agents once the season ends...

Standing pat will mean a boring last few months, but won't mean much going into next year.

This team minus Dunn & Jr is a BIG alteration. A big boost to the defense and hopefully to our team batting average. Living and dying by the long ball is not a formula for success.

Exactly! Yeah, Homer stunk it up tonight. But 1 friggin hit off this scrub?!? Yep, this team "needs" Adam Dunn. You don't build a team around a hitter that's so hit or miss as Dunn is. He's an asset if used correctly, but he's not a player to build the team around.

It's an offense that has average 775 runs per year (820 in 2005).

This is not the team from the last 8 years. Junior is a shadow of his former self. Dunn's his usual hot & cold for months at a time. Same for Edwin. But we're missing those hitters that can just move people around the bases with singles. Votto & Bruce can become those types of players, but they're not there yet.

And look at our runs scored THIS year. This isnt' the same club anymore. A lot of the players are the same, but they're not the same players that they once were.

Youth. Youth.

I think Hairston has earned a shot next year by his performance this year. But if you look in the minors, we've got several options that can be plugged in. Also, you've got options with the FA market as well (and trades). Can we replace Dunn's 40/100/100? Probably not. Definitely not with one player. But those numbers haven't led us to the promised land yet. It's time to change tack.
