Now Bailey can't throw strikes.

Maybe he is better suited as a one inning reliever...that's where they need to try him, it is hard to see him developing the quality of off-speed offering to succeed as a starter in the time frame in which he has to.

The Reds should replace the Griffey home run counter with a Bailey hits given up counter.

I have wondered that too. He needs to go to the pen and just sit there for the rest of the season. He obviously can't get it done at the MLB level at the moment and I really don't think sending him back to AAA would do any good either.

He looks better today. The Reds are going to have to let him take his licks. Whether it is at this level or AAA. Bailey needs to refine his stuff, and to my way of thinking that will only come with reps. We have to accpet that this may be ugly.

Looked like Dick Pole just told Homer the same thing.....but ,maybe a bit less cordial.

The last six outs contain what is wrong with the Reds.......

Well, now make it seven outs.

1. The Brewers were absolutly giving Adam Dunn an RBI.....just giving it to him. But Adam wanted the HR chance more.......just disgusting.

2. The Reds organizational coaching is just awful. Bailey has been pitching for 4 years now? And he cannot dust off Hall with the chips on the line? So Pole goes out and yells at him after the fact?

3. Corey Patterson.......what a waste of a ML baseball uniform.

That inning looked awfully good on the Gameday. 95's and 96's, 87 mile an hour slider, and a couple of high 70's curveballs, one for a strike, one good enough to get a swing out of Fielder on the next pitch. That's why Walt and Dusty keep running him out there: he's got big-time stuff.

I think the reason we don't see it more is because it is more of a 12-6 curve. If he hangs that it is in the river. It needs to be restricted to occasional use, but it needs to be shown more often.

This game has been a pretty good example of why the Reds are ten games below .500. The pitchers get ahead in the count and throw hittable fastballs down the middle instead of making the hitter chase, and the offense turns a potential big inning into nothing. Now all we need is a couple errors. Frustrating.

OK. The Reds are doing something good with the RRBL and I'm impressed with the program.

However, enough is enough. Looking at what promises to be a constant three hour appeal for money, missing plays because they are too busy trying to get people to send money, the constant babbling by Thom Brennam (who I'm sorry ever came to Cincinnati) and I changed over to the Milwaukee broadcast. Much better.

And, BTW, despite some poor pitches in tight situations, this is the best I've seen Bailey this year. His stuff is much better, he's got some pop on his fastball and his location, generally speaking, is pretty good.

Agree totally with Doug. It was a pretty good outing for Homer, a real move in the right direction. And at 1-2 to Braun, I don't care how good a fastball he threw or how erratic his curveball is. He should have thrown one off-speed pitch or a fastball way out of the zone or way up. No way you let Braun win the game there without at least one pitch he can't possibly hit.

If you have DirecTV, you can switch from the Reds feed with all the Reds Community Fund stuff, to the Brewers feed. Here it is on channel 722. Much more baseball....

Extra Innings package has both Cincinnati and Milwaukee broadcasts. I switched to Milwaukee and I'm actually getting someone that's talking about the game.

1-2-3 inning for Suppan

Teams are going to love to face the Reds with the way they hit and pitch.

EE and Patterson both with two pitch outs. No patience.

I think the shift that gets played on Dunn (and Griffey) has really killed their batting averages. That last ground out by Adam would have been a ground single to right without the shift.

I would love to see how many extra outs per season that shift costs us. I would bet that if you add that in with Dunn's average, that you would get a similiar average to his first few years ...

Of course, MLB teams make adjustments. Until Dunn (or Griffey) can regularly bunt the ball down the third base line and 'defeat' the shiift, it will keep getting used against them.

Patterson's 0-3 is bringing him back to his mean. We always knew his recent surge to a .569 OPS wasn't going to last.

I'm giving up to go see the Portland Beavers play the Round Rock Express (I thought it was an Arena Football team)
Hoping to take in some solid baseball....it's been awhile.

There it is, more bad defense. A routine groundball hit to our DH playing SS who of course can't make the play.

Overall, that was a positive outing for Homer. The question is: can he build on it?

As for Dunn defeating the shift, I have mixed feelings about what he's doing. If there is no one on base and he gets a pitch that he thinks he can drive by pulling the ball I don't have a problem with that, even if it turns into a ground ball to the 2nd baseman in short right. However, when he has a situation like he had early in the game today with a man on 3rd and two out, he's really got to try to hit that ball to the left side. Today, anything to the left side except right at the only fielder on that side of the field scores a run. That's something Adam has to get done.

I think the shift that gets played on Dunn (and Griffey) has really killed their batting averages. no evidence of that ... in Dunn's case his has been unlucky more than anything. His BABIP is way down this year(.249) from last year(.309) and teams have been playing the shift for a number of years. If Dunn had more of an average BABIP(.290) he would be hitting ~265-270 and no one would be complaining.

I think the most impressive part of that play was David Ross actually caught the ball for once. ;)

Bruce is having an outstanding day. He's 2-for-4 at the plate with his 11th homerun, his 11th double, and has driven in all three runs. In the field he has made three very good plays and has gunned down two runners.

Gagne comes on to face Edwin.

He takes a belt high changeup called strike one. Fouls off a pitch up around neck height and then takes a fastball on the corner for strike three.

6-3 Brewers after 8.

The Reds are playing some of the worst baseball they've played in a long time and yet I still can't wait to get to Cincy this weekend for three games against the Astros. Am I dedicated or what?:)

:D

I just love baseball. I'd still watch them if they went 0-162.

I'm looking forward to watching Bruce play for the first and getting to see Cueto and Volquez pitch again. I've seen both of them pitch once this season - Cueto on April 19th against the Brewers when he allowed 2 ER in 7 innings and received a no decision and I saw Volquez on May 18th against the Indians when he allowed two runs in six innings for a win. Dunn always homers when I'm in attendance so look for him to have a big weekend, and Votto has hit two homeruns in the four games I've been to this season, though he only started two of those games.

Another weak groundout by Patterson to begin the 9th. I think I need to go lay down...I had a tooth pulled today and it's still bleeding pretty good and making me light headed. I had a couple teeth pulled back in June and it bled like crazy. I went to bed that night around 1:00 AM and woke up three hours later in a pool of blood and I actually passed for like 10 minutes while walking to the bathroom. Getting teeth pulled is not fun.

I will say though that there's a part of me that would rather have teeth pulled than have to watch Corey Patterson hit.

Not to make light of having teeth pulled but watching the Reds right now is pretty miserable too.

Perhaps your doctor can give you something that can be used to minimize the pain in either case. ;)
